Free Cans of Dick Smith Australian Beetroot This Sunday 25th 8.30-11.30am The Corso at Manly

460

From the Dick Smith Foods Facebook page:

As a sad follow up to our canned beetroot that we saved from being ploughed back into the ground… it turns out the supermarkets have refused to stock it. We have been told that all Australians want is the cheapest. So we will be giving away $100,000 worth of beautiful Australian beetroot this Sunday 25th March from 8.30am until 11.30am at the Manly Beach end of The Corso at Manly.

Come along and take a couple of cans or a carton.

  • So, pardon my ignorance… what's wrong with the beetroot? Why are they ploughing it back into the ground?

First Dick Cheese, now Dick Root … Or is it Beet Dick?

    • Tasteless jokes.

      • Get over it

    • +4

Don't forget the DickHeads matches :P

    • +1

It's lke they say. You can root a beet, but you can't beat a root.

  • +4

Doesn't giving it away make it the cheapest? But he's not making it available for all - just one of Sydney's richer suburbs.

    Well done, Dick.

    • They have an office in Sydney so im guessing thats why they picked Manly… Being one of the hot spots, by nooo way rich…

    • lol, rich people don't live in manly

    • rich compared to this guy i guess.

    • There are a lot of overseas visitors around Manly so I guess he wants to make a point.

  • +4

Who is going to go to Dymocks or Flight Centre to buy beetroots seriously. Does he have a lemming for a consultant?

  • +7

Hmm… Well done Dick Smith for sticking it to the international markets..
However, -ve for this bargain as the title is "Free Cans of Dick" on my browser tab. People around me do not understand it's a bargain website! Though the 'facial' expressions are great.. negates the -ve! :D

Is this new or used? never know with Dick smith…

    • This is not DSE this is Dick Smith the food company.

      • Hang on… are you telling me that DSE don't sell cans of beetroot?!?

        • +10

You've confused them with Schrute Farms.

    • +1

DSE isn't even run by Dick Smith, its Woolworths. Why do you feel the need to post such dribble??

  • mmm, beetroot. i'd grab a couple of cartons if i was down south

  • +2

    On ya dick

  • bears, beets, battlestar galactica.

  • Why not sell the beetroot at DSE as well? Surely it would be as successful there as it would be in a book store or a travel agent.

    • +2

DSE is owned by Woolworths, not Dick Smith himself.

      • I completely forgot about that.

        • Dont worry a lot of us have as well :D

  • +2

Bargain, but would be better to donate to charities that feed the homeless.

    • +1

      Exactly what I was thinking…

    • Exactly - it doesn't have a shelf life, so why get rid of it in a hurry (publicity I suppose)

    • +2

"The Australian-owned companies Dymocks Booksellers and Flight Centre were prepared to sell the beetroot for Smith, but he decided against the offer because it would have been expensive and difficult to distribute it, he said.

Instead, Mr Smith will give some of it away to food charities and will hand out the rest tomorrow morning in Manly."

    The big supermarkets disgust me.

The more people who 'race to the bottom' and buy these foreign, imported goods, the less chance we have of seeing Australian goods in the supermarket (and Australian jobs).

You'll find very little sympathy for that view here methinks…..

      • +2

When there are no Australian jobs left for our children and grandchildren, I bet many of us will wish we bought Australian when we could.

        • +1

…. and went to the local servo instead of to Woolworths for the supposed 4cent discount for which they've jacked up the price anyway.

      • +1

You're probably partly right. But I don't come to OzBargain for food bargains.

I personally avoid the Coles and Woolies branded foods as much as I can, because I know they are detrimental to Australian food producers.

So there is some sympathy for that view. I'll pay an extra 20-50c for Aussie food. It'll cost me an extra $10 or so for my grocery shopping, but I believe that is an investment in my own future employment in Australia.

        • Well said. Buying foreign goods may save a few dollars now but it's just going to result in fewer jobs for the next generation of Aussies.

    • +1

We have been told that all Australians want is the cheapest

Yep, so much for Australian jobs and australian-made food. All we want is the cheapest. That's the sad reality that even Dick Smith himself concedes.

      • +2

Just chasing the cheapest will come back to bite us in the bum.Know of any prosperous Nations not manufacturing anything?

        • +2

          Australia?

        • +1

          But for how long?

        • +3

          /rant/

Only until the resources 'boom' (I also use that term very loosely indeed) ceases to allow international mega-consortiums to rape our country. As we've seen globally, once we have negligible natural resources left to sell off for next to nothing in comparison to their real worth, these mining conglomerates will pull out & just leave us to clean up the economic & environmental mess!

A very few selfish or corrupt people in Australia (including some of our politicians) are making a hell of a lot of money from this debauchery, others in the industry are making a bit; but the short sightedness of our mining & resources policies for percieved short-term gain will come back to bite us on the backside when the bubble bursts!

          /end rant/

  • To be fair, when ever I goto woolies to get some beetroot for lunch, I normally go for the cheapest can, because I know I wont' get through the whole thing anyway (or even if I do, they all taste the same to me :} )

  • -1

    Anyone went and got some?

    • Not Sunday yet…

  • You know the old saying: "You can beat an egg, but you can't beat a free …." ;)

  • +2

+ve for this simply because the supermarkets are such a*holes.
