Telstra 40GB $150 12-Month Pre-Paid Data-Only SIM for $120 (Discount Shows in Cart) @ Telstra

380

Seems to be a glitch, but the $150 prepaid sim only data pack is $120 when you put it in your cart and checkout.

I've recently bought an iPad Cellular and was shocked at how much Telstra and Optus are charging to add the device to my existing plan.

Instead of the $15 per month ($180 per year) you can get this for $120 and it lasts 12 months.

My internet needs for this iPad will be limited so 40GBs will be ample for me.

Hope this helps someone in my position!

for $119 you can get 120GB with coles mobile plus any bonus weekly flybuys (i got 4000) and i think they still have 1000 flybuys

      That's a good one thanks!

I "need" Telstra because I'm planning on being in rural locations often.

      • +5

Understandably you'd want to be on the Telstra retail network then. The other option would be Boost, they're the only reseller on the retail network with pretty much full access.

Good find with the glitch by the way.

        Boost is way cheaper

        • Woolworths is also on Telstra… I don’t know about the priority rates but it’s got Telstra coverage

          • +6

@[Deactivated]: Boost is full Tesltra wholesale network as distinct from the retail reseller network of Woolies, Aldi etc

@0jay: Gotcha. It’s still got better coverage than Optus from experience.
I’m on Telstra and wife is on Woolies… not a huge difference, they both work

Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s a difference most people are unlikely to suffer from

@0jay: I’m with Kogan (Vodafone) and I generally get faster speeds and better signal than my Mrs who is on Boost (Telstra). Both using iPhone 11 Pro Max’s

@antik: I find Voda to be the best of the three around inner Melb.

Really dependent on where you're located though.

                    • @0jay: Yeah we are inner Melb. I work at the airport and Vodafone is by far the best. Telstra was too congested and Optus signal was poor

@[Deactivated]: I had Aldi mobile and my partner had Boost. In Victoria and SA, Aldi and Boost were pretty much the same. When we crossed into WA this changed and in rural areas where she had service I usually did not.

@[Deactivated]: I have both boost and aldi sims in my phone.

Boost had coverage anywhere there was telstra signal/tower

The same cannot be said of Aldi, just pot luck when you had signal out there in the outback(Wa/NT/SA/QLD/NSW).I assume it would be the same for other resellers like aldi.

I still haven't figured out who decides which tower give access to who, some weird places had aldi service(no aldi supermarket for thousands of Km's)

By comparison, when I was with Kogan, I would not recommend Voda for any travelling outside major cities. Found that out travelling to Uluru, no reception from Port august till I hit Uluru…

              @mixo: Yikes thanks.
I’m pondering what to do when Telstra prepaid plan is up for the year and I lose my 5G access.
It’ll be either Vodafone (if their prepaid yearly plans have 5G) or boost (because it’s cheaper 4G).
5G is nice but I wouldn’t pay more for it.. it doesn’t make that much of a difference to me

I am using a dual sim phone for work - primary sim with Telstra, secondary sim with Optus. I was very surprised when I came across many areas in Sydney metro where Telstra had only 1 or 2 bars, whereas Optus had full coverage. It'd be good to have both if you can.

    • +1

Optus is good in sydney metropolitana.
But greater NSW i think Boost is great.

I find vodafone to be good in canberra.?

  • +2

Not a glitch, it’s an active promotion. The data inclusion is also much more than 40GB.

    $150 SIM. Now $120.
Get $30 off a Pre-Paid SIM with 90GB of data for use in Australia plus unlimited calls and texts to standard numbers in Australia. 60GB from your second recharge. Online only. Ends 17 Nov 2021. Future recharges will be full price.

    • Sorry, my mistake. There’s two offers on, one for 6 months and the other for 12.

  • +1

$150 sim with 90gb is only for 6 months not 12 months.

  • +1

It's a little confusing with the two prepaid offers- but basically the 90GB for $120 for 6 months with calls included is the key deal.

From what I can tell it's 4G only (not 5G) too.

    • Yeah if it’s 5G it’ll be a perfect deal for me

      • Yeah if it’s 5G it’ll be a perfect deal for me

What does it matter? 4G get up 100Mb/s compared to 400-500Mb/s for 5G. Show me an app that needs more than that.

        • +3

There’s a massive difference… it’s not the speed that matters, but the latency.

Because you need your Facebook updates 0.02 seconds faster?

Ive been using boost mobile for quite a few years now
At $150 per year with something like about 80Gb of data , which i never get through and i get unlimited calls and text as well to numerous countries if you have people overseas

Boost pricing has changed so the spend and gb has changed also

I have an ipad which i take out on occasions but i then hot spot to the phone , it saved a lot of money buying a non celular version ipad however the non celular misses out on the gps

Boost uses more telstra network than aldi however it isnt 100% telstra so there is some places that boost wont work where telstra will , but they will generally be pretty remote

    • +1

places that boost wont work where telstra will

Sorry that's incorrect. Mrs w works for the RFDS, her personal phone has a Boost SIM, her work phone is Telstra. Everywhere she goes - Boulia, Lockhart River, Kowanyama, etc etc - if she gets Telstra she gets Boost.

Boost doesn't offer 5G, however neither does Telstra on lower value plans like these.

      TL;DR?

      Boost coverage = Telstra coverage.

      • "Sorry that's incorrect."

Don't be so sure that your wife tried it in all areas where myself and many others commenting on here have.

I spent many weeks experimenting with 2 identical 4GX capable mobile phones, one with Boost, other with Telstra,

and most of the time really similar, but in some places during certain weather events, there was a REAL noticable/

measurable difference between bars of reception ( usually only by 1 bar ), but more often a difference in data speeds.

      • sorry you are incorrect

gf drove to darwin from sydney and somewhere she stopped for the night the phone wouldnt work at the pub where others with telstra had service

as i said wont work in some places

try some other real life experiences

        • Please report back back with both phones locked to Band 28 /700MHz.

We've travelled extensively in rural QLD, NT, and northern NSW and no difference.

In fact about 30ks out of Coober Pedy in 2017, we were in a convoy and a mates Pootrol died. He stood on the roof rack with mrs w's S7 at the time (Telstra SIM), his iPhone 5+ (Telstra SIM) , and my Lumia 950 (Boost SIM).

2 of these handsets were blue TICK. The Lumia wasn't.

The Lumia, on Boost, got a call to RACQ, which was patched to to RAC NT.

Keep reading the the WP thread, and I'm happy for to keep a Boost SIM.

          Aha an edit :)

Why was this marked expired- it still working this morning when you add to cart

  • Boost mobile sim for $10 month (down from $30) gives you 40GB a month and loads of other stuff….yes you have to re-register but it gives you 12x the data for the same price.

Also - boost is Telstra networks so pretty much the same thing really (sort of)

    • +2

The cycle is 28 days not monthly. And if you recharge on the same sim and do not source a new discounted $30 sim every month (and transfer your number every month), the 40gb is only on the first three 28day recharges and the $10 goes up to $30 after the first 28 days.

      • Yes, after the first 3 X 28 days you will only get 20GB onwards.

To much data don’t know what most average person will do with it, luckily it has long expiration for this purpose

Streaming HD is 2-3GB per hour so this is only 14-20 hours of streaming HD over 12 months.

  • Any one uses belong sim?

How does it compare to Boost?

    • +1

Belong uses the Telstra wholesale network so coverage is not as good as Boost.

    • Belong coverage definitely not as good, lots of places my sister’s Boost has network and mine has only 1-2 bar of signal and some times even sos

  • Reposting so it is easier to see :)

This page has a great map showing the difference between Telstra wholesale and Telstra networks. They are significant in rural and regional areas..

  • Heads up, this deal also seems to be having the same "glitch" as the 6 month deal where it comes up at $100 at checkout.
