Flex Tape or Better Solution for Bandaging up a Broken Garbage Bin Lid

My genius of a house mate somehow broke the red garbage bin lid at the joint so now I have the privileged lucky task to fix it.

I am thinking to just flex tape or duct tape it for now to hold it give it a bit more life while I research and study a proper way to fix it.

It's still in one piece thankfully no holes just the left side is now not joined together so I'm going to reinforce it before we become that house with a funny looking lid.

Yeah never share house with old crazy people man.. The savings is not worth it.

So where is the best place to get some flex tape.

Trying to find the best $/m I know this will come in handy for a few other things in future like ghetto repairing a window he somehow broke with his microwave don't ask I don't know.

Our local council will replace lids at no cost?

Oh TIL. Maybe I will ring council tomorrow or next time I'm free with the owner.

      • Some councils you can apply for repair on their website.

    • Yup, we needed a wheel replaced on ours. Just give the council a call a few days before the next bin collection night and they'll sort it for you.

Check with your local council. Our lid was torn off by the rubbish truck during collection, they put me in contact with the waste company, who came around and fixed it next day for free. This is in SA, YMMV.

Get in touch with your council. They will repair or replace it.

  • Find something made of plastic (old chopping board), cut it to size, massage to shape with a heat gun/stove, then glue it over the crack like a large band aid.

Photos? Hard to say really…..But as others have said, try the council for a free replacement.

I'd like an MS Paint image.

I'd like a photo just so I can say: That's A Lotta Damage!

  • Zip ties came to my mind. Might need to drill some new holes.

    • Thought about that but i don't see that lasting a year.

Go on the council website and book to get the lid replaced. No cost.

  • If the lid is not hanging on properly the garbage truck is likely to finish it off. They get pretty rough.

Don’t use duct tape. It leaves residue that makes it hard to stick other stuff. Glue of any type is unlikely to stick well.

If you can’t get it repaired by council, plastic weld or brace it with some aluminium or other stuff and rivet/zip tie/screw together.

Our bin has a split up the side. I cut some sheet metal to size, bent it roughly to shape and rivetted it on because the council won’t replace bins older than 5 years or something.

  • Just whip one up with your 3D printer.

  • SOS tape maybe a quick fix.

The bin belongs to the council, get them to fix it.

  • Small price to pay for a tenant. Try getting young people and get much more damage around the house! Sharing always means sacrifice but the extra few hundred a week or more is worth it!

And…. my lid got same damage! I keep on putting carefully crafted sticks and branches in! My guys are professional men aged 25-35… and I've had various tenants. Best ones are friendly ones that don't drink and smoke excessively, and if all they damage is the bin that's fantastic!!!

used gorilla tape on my cracked bins a few years ago: still going strong

    • Yeh my recycle bin had a big crack in the lid. Could have rang council for a replacement I guess but thought I'd try to repair, less landfill and all that.. Filled crack with silicone. Did the job, no more filling with rain.

The other bin that the rubbish truck dragged down the street though, that was beyond repair.

      • Meta question: Do they recycle broken recycling bins? 🤔
