Velocity Platinum Card and 120k Points

Hi all,

We're looking at heading to Port Douglas for a holiday next year and noticed that flights are a bit more expensive than we expected - approx $2200 return. We have ~45000 virgin velocity points but it seems we need 100k+ points to fly the 4 of us (2 adults / 2 kids) return.

We stumbled across the velocity points earning credit cards page which piqued our interest.

The platinum card has a $375 yearly cost and a reward of 120k velocity points upon a $4500 spend. Interestingly enough, the accommodation we're looking it at roughly $4500.

The terms and conditions state that eligible purchases do not include cash advances, interest, fees and charges for traveller’s cheques and foreign currencies - but nothing about any other purchases that aren't eligible, like booking accommodation.

So i guess my question is - has anyone used this card to get the 120k points and was it relatively painless? Or are we best to just purchase plane tickets the old fashioned way??

The only other thing in the terms and conditions was regarding not being eligable if you've had an american express card in the last 18 months. I did have an american express card but have a cancellation email from 20/04/20 which was 18 months and 16 days ago! Hoping that's good enough!

Cheers!

  • There's nothing stopping you from paying in full for the accommodation as it will count towards your bonus spend.

Just be sure to factor in 2-3 months after spend before you'll see the points.

    • I had my bonus points through AMEX Velocity Platinum by the end of the month when I met the spend but YMMV.

      • All the non amex cards I've had(from 4-5 banks) the points get credited at the end of the 3 months.
