Why does it say "Non-touch" under touchscreen? Yoga is supposed to be touch screen?

    • +10

There are 2 different types of Yoga, 2-in-1 and Slim models.

      https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/yoga/products

    • +6

I removed one of your negs for you mate, it was a reasonable question. I looked it up myself last time. CodeXD has your answer below :)

    • +1

Darn. If a touchscreen I would have bought it.

    • +1

Just curious, what do you guys use the touch screen for? I've had a spectre for the longest time and I've never really used the feature other than when it's tablet mode.

      • +1

haha my x1 carbon has touch screen and honestly never used even once lol. If the screen could fold all the way over i would.

Think i accidently touched it once when showing a friend and im like oooo i have a touch screen I forgot hahaha

      • I use it for trading. It’s a lot easier looking at graphs, zooming in and out.

  • +4

I just received the slightly higher spec version of this with the 5800HS creators edition CPU. Whilst not much faster, it runs at 35W rather than this model at 45W TPD. I haven't pushed the graphics at all. The OLED screen is lovely. I am happy and with purchase. I didn't require a touch screen.

    • nice onehows the weight if you carry it in your bag with the charger?

  • battery life of this thing if used conservatively?

    • -6

61wh is not going to be pretty.

      • +1

I get 4 hrs on my e14 g3 with a 45wh battery that I've got set to 80% max charge, 61wh should come close to a working day?

    • +3

The review of this laptop said it had good battery life using it for productivity.

      https://ausdroid.net/2021/10/18/lenovo-yoga-slim-7-pro-ryzen…

AMD Ryzen 5000 series as a lot more power efficient.

  • +3

Not had a chance to test battery yet. For those that care, the SSD inside mine is a SKHynix HFS512GDE9X084N

    • +12

The screen quality on this thing is top notch. 90hz with oled to boot on a thin and light.
You don't know what you're on about.

    • +12

Please send me an example of another 8 core cpu based laptop with a 2.8k OLED screen under 1k

  • I'm sorely tempted by the specs. Any reviews I can have a gander at that anyone can recommend?

  • +1

Very tempted! However I'm still going to hold out for black Friday even though I don't think there will be much of a difference! Been considering a macbook air (Base). Even though it's not comparative in specs, the battery life, longevity of the machine, form factor and build quality might away me.

    • +1

FWIW I don't think you can go wrong with either, although if you game at all the Lenovo will be 100% better. I am an M1 MacBook Air user with the 8c GPU, it's so damn good - I kind of wish I could game still, and it can play CSGO and stuff like that alright I guess, but it's still not a gaming machine, mostly because nothing is optimised for M1.

Anyways I have zero regrets from my purchase. It's the best laptop I've ever owned and used, and I've had just about all of them it feels haha.

      • You can do some light gaming on the new M1 Pro chips and easily hit +100fps on M1 Max on many demanding games (and that's only Rosetta, not native)

  • Any thoughts on the comparison between this and the X1 Carbon gen 9?

I've been holding out for a better prize on the carbon, but it's still around $2,100 with the i7 configuration. The Slim 7 Pro looks pretty competitive from what I'm seeing, so I'm tempted to jump now…

    • +2

Just to add more options into the mix, there's a touch screen with an even lighter chassis to release this month. It's the slim 7 carbon.

    • +1

Carbon for me as better port selection and wwan option

      • +1

Yeah, the ports on the carbon do seem like its main advantage. I have the gen 6 at the moment, and having full sized hdmi built in is great.

        • +1

I too still use my gen6 carbon everyday. Still going awesome. Think I'll wait for gen10

          • @daft009: haha i got gen 6 too, mine is going well no hassles at all. Was going to upgrade the hard drive. Debating between Lenovo Yoga carbon but hard to choose.

        • +1

I have seen some G6 sell for $850 on Fleabay. Not a bad changeover if you buy a Gen 9 for $2100. Factoring in 10% Fleabay fees or you can try Fb marketplace for no fees. I just brought a Gen 5 usb C for $450. Sold my Gen 1 for $150. Pretty happy for a $300 changeover. I had my Gen 1 for 5.5 years. Once you go carbon you would not want a yoga.

          • @SoTightEcoLPI: thanks man yeah was thinking $800-900 would be a good sale. It's in perfect condition and never had an issue so think ill give it a go thanks

      • @daft009 silly question but whats the difference between wwan and hotspotting your mobile etc or connecting to wifi

        • +1

Just 1 less thing to worry about.
Wwan means the laptop will take its own SIM card. Very handy on the road visiting customers etc for me.. Not fumbling with hotspot etc

          • @daft009: Yeah have to admit hot spotting can be a bit spotty for me as well. If you're a road warrior a dedicated sim would be nice.

            • @sackrace: Yeah this was/is my first laptop with wwan. Never going back.

So carbon X1 is my go-to replacement too in the future

              • @daft009: I'm a tight arse so got a e14g3, but I get the appeal. Sooner or later I'm going to work on a site that makes me yearn for WWAN.

                • @sackrace: Thanks for sharing guys. Is the reception or speed any faster with WWAN over hot spotting.

Or is it just the convenience factor

                  • @AussieMark: For me it was more the convenience. It's been more than fast enough for emails, websites etc

Never really speed tested head to head but could easily get 20-70Mbps depending on where I was

The current carbon X1 g9 also has a 5G modem option

    • +1

@gollux x1carbon gen 9 is about $1400 at the moment but without windows and using the promo codes

there was also 20% cashback last week

i7 may be a tad higher

      • Thanks, @AussieMark. I meant to use the 20% cashback deal, but I got to it a few hours too late. Since I'm locked in to Windows, I guess I'll wait for a better deal to pop up - maybe around Black Friday?

        • +1

Oh you can use windows but just use any windows from past laptops. You can get the key and normally use it I believe

            • +1

@gollux: Haha what's that facial expression. I know some licensed are OEM but you can use your past windows keys to upgrade for free on your new laptop

As windows offers free windows 10/11 upgrade to past windows

  • +1

How can this screen be HDR 500 when the screen is only 400nits?

is 400nits the average brightness but it can reach peaks above 500nits?

    • I believe so … OLED TV's can overdrive for short periods of time to get localised brightness up over the max rated brightness, so assume that is the same here. My TV can do 800nits for sun glare, bright lights and it hurts at night!

    • Probably. It is quite common for TV's and monitors with oled to push quite a bit above their normal peak brightness for HDR content only

  • Is the other 7 Pro version worth the extra $100? Bluetooth + MX450 2GB + faster RAM + Faster processor. Code also applies to it.

    • Yes I reckon so. Dedicated video is a plus, as is faster memory and cooler CPU.

      • Is the MX450 more powerful than the integrated AMD GPU?

        • The MX450 is more powerful then the AMD Integrated GPU but it is dependent on the game. Some games the margin is in the single digits, whist in other games it could be 10 or 15 fps. This is also not clear cut and can vary depending on resolution and game settings. You should treat both as entry level GPUs.The main trade off with having the dGPU would be potentially less battery life.

        • The MX450 doesn't support any of Nvidia's NVENC encoding, so it's purely for gaming (at which it is only a little better than an iGPU)

          • +1

@greatlamp: Yeah I checked benchmarks for the MX450 and while it's better than the vega iGPUs it was not so much better that it actually changed use cases from memory.

    • Link please

  • use code LBLENOVO on the normal website for $500 + off

    • nope did not work for me

    • That code expired at the end of October, unfortunately. I will now never know whether it would have theoretically applied to the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon range.

      • Haha sorry I tried it a few days ago and it worked but must have been Oct 31

  • what did you say?

    $1899 normal price

    LBLENOVO code didn't work.

    • Apologies worked a few days ago. My bad

Shame about that paltry rez. Altho it is only 14"..

      • +1

1080 s fine for office work on 20 inch screens, for a 14 inch portable it's not a big deal and should mean longer battery life too.

        • 1080 vertical rez just isn't very productive

          • @justtoreply: To each their own then, for my purposes past 1080p on a laptop is not a real benefit.

  • So the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon range finally became available to order today, essentially the lighter weight version of this Pro model. Anyone able to check whether it's available on the Education portal and what they're asking for it? Been umming and aahing over these two models and the 300g that separates them for a while. The price difference is a little more than I'd like but to be fair that's comparing a deeply discounted educational price versus full ticket price.

$2600 full price on the main site is pretty hefty, though it seems I have the choice of either using the 10% off newsletter code (WEL10222) or risking it on Shopback's upsized 16% cashback. The smart money might be waiting for Black Friday promos, but in doing so I imagine I'd miss the chance of a pre-Christmas delivery. Tough decision coming up.

    • +2

That model is $1700.10 on the Student store, I have sent you a PM to get access into the education store to order if you wanted.

      • Incredible deal, especially since that pricing is for the 5800U with Premium Care ($2900 ticket price) instead of the 5600U and standard warranty that I'd have been perfectly content with (and for which I'd have been hopeful and accepting of a deal in the low $2000s).

Reckon that's easily a good enough deal to get a post of its own instead of being hidden in the comments here. I mean obviously list prices aren't everything but the Pro deal here is about $500 off the listed price, and the Carbon is $1200 off. :o

(Needless to say, I've already placed the order. Huge thanks for that.)

        • Link please of the one you are referring to

          • +1

@congo: The link to the product on the normal store is in my original post above, but here it is again. The student store has the $2899 variant down to $1889, then the code EDUCOMM takes it down further to $1700. (No discount is applicable to the $2599 customisable version, but to repeat, the only differences between the two are the CPU and the warranty)

Compared to the Pro version, the Carbon is about 300g lighter at 1.1kg vs 1.4kg, and sports the low-power U-series CPUs instead of the beefier H/HS-series ones used in the Pro. Not a concern for me as my only requirements in a laptop are that it's 14", AMD-powered for better efficiency, and has an OLED screen.

As for education store access, I don't know the logistics of generating access for it and for all I know the code may be unique to each user, so do PM doweyy if you're interested.

        • Whichone you ordered ? Integrated AMD GPU or MX450 ? And reason please.

          • @ChipsChicky: I have no reason to game on my laptop at all, so I've just gone with the integrated graphics. Not sure there was a choice anyway on the non-customisable version, but even if I was able to get it discounted it would have no value for me.

            • @mystarey: The one coming down to $1700 is touchscreen or without touch ?

              • @ChipsChicky: Without. It's exactly as specced in the link above, since if you look at the $2899 variant the only option is to Add to Cart. Hopefully they add more variants over the coming days, since this is only the first day they've been available (and I've been checking daily for weeks).

Personally it suits me fine since I used to have a T440s with touchscreen and I kept accidentally activating things with my knuckle whenever accessing the top row of keys. >.>

                • @mystarey: oh, so you were one of those 39 people viewing it currently, as per the site, from last few weeks ?

                  37 remaining to be discovered.

I will wait for touch screen as I feel its convenient sometimes to use calculator on screen. But will it consume more power if its touch screen ? Apart from that, I think integrated gpu (vs MX450) and 5800U (vs 5800H) is better option for low power consumption and quiet fan. @shellshocked plz confirm this ?

        • Any idea if the non-touch model comes with a glossy or matte display?
Would prefer a matte display but that looks like a ripper deal regardless!

          • @charmander: The spec sheet says glossy either way, be it for the touch or non-touch screen. Haven't seen a proper review of the unit but looking at a "quick look" video on YouTube seems to confirm this.

      • doweyy could you please PM this link too?

        • +2

You'll need to open your messaging settings to accept PM's in your account so I can send you a PM please.

          • @doweyy: accepted, thanks in advance

      • -1

        You must be mistaken
There is no slim 7 carbon on the student store. I've searched. I'm looking to buy it as soon as it's available.

        • You can view it but you cannot order it. Not available yet

        • +1

It's definitely available in the SB education store (shipping early December), I have sent you a PM with the info.

          • @doweyy: Much appreciated, dude.
I'm looking at the one with touch and the mx450 and I don't think I can configure your linked one. Sad days.
Edit: Have access to Lenovo Education portal, not the Student Beans portal, which is why I couldn't find it.

          • @doweyy: @doweyy oh would y ou mind sending me too?

        • Available here for $1700 after discount: https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/education/laptops/yoga/yoga-sli…

          • @juser10: Thanks for the heads up. I'm looking for the one with touch and mx450. Damn.

      • Hi @doweyy, could you pm me the edu access, please? Thank you.

      • Hi @doweyy, Any chance you could PM me access to the edu store too? Son's 17" Lenovo just gave up the ghost.
        Much appreciated.

  • Any advantage to go with AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS Creator Edition for extra $300?
Also, is there any way to remove Windows all together and select smaller 256Gb SSD? Canadian store seems to have those option.

    • +1

Not really. HS CPUs are binned for better power efficiency, and have a 35w TDP vs 45w TDP.

      • so 9 5900HS will be more power efficient but not as performing as 7 5800H?
