Noctua NH-L12S Low Profile CPU Cooler (120mm PWM Fan) $67.09 + $9 Delivery @ Noctua Cooling Solutions via Newegg

420

AIO of my itx build died, so needed a new cooler. Considering the limited lifespan of AIO and the amount of waste afterwards, it seems like the low profile fan coolers is the better option.

I was originally going for the Alpenfohn Black Ridge but it's OOS at PCCG (while too expensive elsewhere).

Noctua prices especially in Australia are baffling.

Ships from Taiwan. Claims to deliver in 5-17 days for most of their customers.
(EDIT: My order just shipped, and it's being couriered by DHL.)

Same reason i bought the Alpenfohn Black Ridge. My AIO died in a little over a year and I decided to move to the air cooler for my ITX build.

Both this Noctua and the Alpenfohn are great ITX coolers.
I still use CTR to undervolt the Ryzen CPU to reduce heat load as these coolers will still struggle with a high power draw cpu.

    • What's CTR?

Undervolting through BIOS with zen+ & MSI B450 has been super flaky for me

    • I haven't looked into undervolting for Ryzen since earlier days as it was said it still affects performance. Also I'm only running a 3600 so nothing of high power draw. Currently doing a token 0.05 V offset undervolt lol.

      • I was looking at this precisely for my 3600. I only looked at one review, but basically it was the same performance and noise as the stock cooler. Which sounded suspect, but I didn't look further.

        Shame it's not chromax.

        • I had the stock coolers initially. Very loud and couldn't keep the system cool. Was hitting 80 degrees+ constantly.

          • @apok00: Sure, depends on what you do. Although I don't find it a big deal for gaming, as gaming tends not to hit the cpu hard at 4k and the gfx is already going crazy for noise.

I'm fairly happy with stock actually! But.. itchy buying finger..

  • Can this replace a stock cooler on HP G6 Elitedesk 800 SFF build?

    https://www.hp.com/au-en/shop/hp-elitedesk-800-g6-small-form…

    Thanks.

    • So a 1.9k pre-built pc can't even cool itself? That raises a few questions personally…

If they have a standard socket layout and if the chip isn't soldered to the motherboard, you can try your luck.

If it doesn't work, you could easily flip this for the price you bought or even a 10% mark-up and some poor soul will end up buying it cause they don't know any better.

      • It idles between 60-70 degrees and shoots up to 90-100 degrees while gaming.

I've had this for sale since March 2021 this year and no one wanted to buy 😰

        • I did some quick google searching and I believe the holes for the cooler are not standard. I highly doubt this cooler would work tbh. Quite expected with pre-builts. They tend to emphasise on cost savings or cooling performance in general. I believe the stock cpu cooler is some sort of blower style cooler which doesn't handle cooling or noise well. Best bet is to run it as a sleeper pc for a server or media server.

          • @CURRYINAHURRY: oh damn, thanks for your help

It's an i7 10700 so that would huge overkill turning it into a media server.

I wasn't expecting cooling to be this bad considering Elitedesk are enterprise line and they are supposed to be built to last

        • its taking up room and thus costing you money, I will take it off you for free to save you trouble :P

  • I have this cooler and is not suitable for a 5900x in my opinion. The fan has to work very hard to cool 100W+ … prob ok for a 5600x

    • Fair, i know people wanna build itx but powerful, but if they're trying to get the hottest CPUs to work with the thinnest possible CPU coolers, then there's gonna be issues.

    • The 5900x pushes 105w TDP and i think the max this cooler is recommended for is around 95W. Definitely need a bigger cooler if you load up the 5900X otherwise it will throttle the CPU to not overheat which you may not be noticing. Fan would be running at 100%

Be interesting to run HWmonitor and see what MAX Temp you are getting.

      • If you search Noctua's site for this cooler they say it is suitable for the 5900x … From mem it was in the 90's under synthetic stress.

My 5900x is on the shelf after having dreadful coil whine on my last motherboard. Waiting for a new motherboard now and have a H115i to try out

  • BARGAIN. Amazing cooler, be careful not to bend it when mounting as mine a bit skewed now, but otherwise excellent performance and at this price, yeah I'd put it up against other reasonably sized tower coolers (not $100 double towers but single towers for sure this is right up there).

    • +2

single towers for sure this is right up there

It's not going to compete with high end single tower with more heat pipes and larger fin stack.

      • +1

I know… That's why I said "reasonable sized tower coolers" and not "high end" coolers.

  • Cooler Master GeminII M5 LED Low-Profile CPU Air Cooler is only $42

    • I cannot find any reviews for that cooler, do you have it?

  • Noctua website: It is not suitable for overclocking and should be used with care on CPUs with more than 95W TDP (Thermal Design Power).

  • Just bought one for my HTPC - which is using an i7 4790, hopefully this runs much quieter and cooler than the stock crappy cooler from intel.

  • Can't speak for the cooler itself but I can recommend buying from Noctua Newegg. I just received some fans a few days ago that took only four days to come from Taiwan to Perth.

  • I think these are pretty good for something like a Skyreach 4 tiny or mini.

Limit on those is 47mm, so this isn't gonna fit.
Best option would be the Alpenfohn Black Ridge.

The L12s is a good fit for the S1 (with squashing) or the T1 in 2-slot GPU mode

I got one of these a few months ago for my 5600X in Meshlicious case. Tight but perfect fit, huge improvement over stock hsf.
    Very happy.

    • good to hear it, I have a full sized case but still considering one of these for a 5600x, I just like it's pretty clean and simple so as long as it does the job.

  • +1

Anyone have a view on this vs the c14s?
It'll be for a 5600x. Might be a nominal difference but figure someone here might have an idea from experience.

    • +4

Get the biggest cooler that fits in your case. It will last forever, it's a good investment.

I have a D14 from a 2010 intel PC now cooling my 3900x with a new mounting bracket Noctua sent me for free

The c14 has a bigger fan and thiicker fin stack, it's bound to be quieter

Dunno if relevant but i ordered a Noctua fan from Newegg on Tuesday. It arrived today. from Taiwan….
