  • EFTPOS gift cards - can only be used in-store at all participating retailers (contained in the link). This variant can be identified by the fact that the card sits on top of the cardboard packaging.

Sorry this maybe a stupid question but I have never used gift cards before.
What is the point of buying these gift cards? are they cheaper somehow? if so how many %? and don't they expire if you don't use them?
    Thanks :)

    • +9

What is the point of buying these gift cards?

The point is that you are buying these gift cards whilst earning Flybuys points that you can redeem on future purchases. This is especially handy for retailers where you may struggle to purchase discounted gift cards through other mediums or other gift card deals (e.g. EB Games, Chatime, Nandos, The Good Guys). However, this only really makes sense if you are making a relatively small purchase at the participating retailers (e.g. $250 or below). If you are looking to make a large-scale purchase (e.g. purchase an M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro at JB Hi-Fi), other deals would probably make more sense.

      are they cheaper somehow?

You pay face value for the gift cards, but if you scan your Flybuys card when purchasing these gift cards, you will earn one standard point per dollar spent on the gift card and 1000 bonus Flybuys points for each $50+ gift card.

      • For a $50 gift card, you will get 1050 Flybuys points.
      • For a $100 gift card, you will get 1100 Flybuys points.

However, you will only earn 1000 bonus Flybuys points on a maximum of five gift cards during this promotion. If you get a sixth gift card during this promotion, you will not earn any more bonus Flybuys points.

      if so how many %?

      • If you get a $50 gift card, you get 10.5% of the purchase price back in Flybuys points.
      • If you get a $100 gift card, you get 5.5% of the purchase price back in Flybuys points.

(I calculated this by assuming 2000 Flybuys points = $10, as that is the conversion rate if you opt for either the upfront in-store discount at Coles or Flybuys Dollars as your redemption method.)

and don't they expire if you don't use them?

Correct. Both the Visa and EFTPOS variants have a three year expiry date. If you don't use all the funds on a gift card when it expires, you will forfeit any remaining balance on the gift card.

      • For each Visa card, is there some sort of card fees ?

        • If the participating retailer levies a surcharge for Visa transactions, then yes, you would have to pay that surcharge.

      • If you don't have a flybuys card can you get a temporary one?

        • +3

Yes, your local Coles should stock some temporary Flybuys cards.

Alternatively, you can sign up to Flybuys on their website or on their app. As soon as you finish the sign-up process, you should receive a barcode that you can you scan in-store whilst you wait for the physical card to arrive in the mail.

You can read more about it here.

Based on the picture of the gift cards in the catalogue, they appear to be the updated ones (VISA) which can be used online too.

    • +2

I went to Coles and Woolworths over the weekend, and only Woolworths stocked the newer Visa gift cards (and only for some types/denominations).

  • +1

Thanks OP, good timing, needed some more EB cards. Shouldn't be any issues using Coles Gift Mastercard to pay and get the bonus points, right?

    • +2

I doubt there would be any issues using Coles Gift Mastercards as a payment method for these gift cards, unless:

      • Coles updated their POS system in the last six days to block Coles Gift Mastercards when purchasing a gift card (highly unlikely), or
      • Staff at the checkouts stop you from using Coles Gift Mastercards to pay for gift cards.

Flybuys (probably) cannot see what kind of payment method you used to pay for the gift cards, so I would be thoroughly surprised if they (or Coles) refused to credit you with any Flybuys points on the grounds you used Coles Gift Mastercards as the payment method.

  • Can someone please explain to me, if I buy a $100 gift card, will it be 1,000 points or 2,000 points?

    • You will get a total of 1100 Flybuys points for a $100 gift card (100 standard points + 1000 bonus points).

  • So better to get Visa card ?

Nandos isn't included in it ?

    • +1

I’d say the Visa card is better, as you can spend it at more participating retailers, plus you can add it to a mobile wallet.

Both the Visa and EFTPOS Eats cards have Nando’s as a participating retailer.

  • So both from the same company, right? The visa is just the updated version? According to the pic, looks like it's the visa one on promo.

    • Yep, both the Visa and EFTPOS variants are issued by Blackhawk Network.

The problem is that your local Coles (like mine) may not carry any of the Visa variants. My local Woolworths has the Visa variant, but that is only for some types/denominations.

      • Normally I only buy the EFTPOS card when I know I am going to use them instore soon . I don't stock them. If it's now updated to visa card, I may stock some of I can find these new cards.

  • Better to see if the retailers are in which type of the card. For example if you specially redeeming for retailer like "The Iconic", then the Visa card can redeem from it, however the EFTPOS version cannot redeem it for "The Iconic".

  • So all ultimate cards eligible for the deal? Or just the 5 in the picture

    • I would say all Ultimate gift cards (except $30 denominations) are included in the deal, because that is what is written in the terms and conditions.

In the previous Ultimate gift card deal at Coles, the HOME gift card was not pictured in the catalogue, and the only exclusion was the $30 denomination. Someone confirmed they received bonus points for the HOME gift card.

bought a student card to see if it works. too bad i did not check the balance of my cole master card, end up pay by credit card.

      • +2

I bought 5x $50 of Ultimate Gift Card for Teens today. Since Flybuys don't transactions don't update until the next day, will find out tomorrow if I get the bonus points.

      • As far as I know the Eats, Kids, Thanks, Home and Beauty & Spa cards are pictured in this week's catalogue.

        • +3

          Tried student, it works.

        • +1

Can also confirm Teens works. I received the bonus Flybuys for my 5x $50 Teens purchased yesterday.

  • Do you have to buy each card in a separate transaction to get the bonus points?

    • +1

      No.

You can buy up to five gift cards in a single transaction and earn standard and bonus points.

      • Sorry. So to confirm. If you buy 5 * $50 gift cards = $250 and you'll get 5000 points equivalent to $50 off a Coles shop. You don't have to buy each one in a separate receipt (which shouldn't take that much longer in self-serve anyway).

        • +3

          Not quite.

If you buy 5x $50 gift cards (i.e. a total of $250), you'll get 250 standard points and 5000 bonus points.

5250 points is equivalent to a $26.25 discount at Coles, Kmart, Target, Liquorland, First Choice Liquor, mycar or Coles Express.

You don't have to buy each gift card in a separate receipt to get the bonus points.

  • Coles Hurstville sold out again!

  • +1

whilst you can't exchange these on ultimate gift cards' website for retailer branded gift cards (JB HiFi / The Good Guys, etc), you can just purchase them digitally from the retailer directly - just did this on the JB website, went through without a hitch.

expiry when using the card for online purchases is 12/29

    • you can just purchase them digitally from the retailer directly

      EFTPOS cards can do that?

      • +3

only the new ones which are visa based - card number starts with 457824

        • What expiry we need to put? I tried to use the card online (tried 3 yrs from now 11/24 or 12/24), it was declined

          • +3

            @hny3: 12/29

            • +1

              @WookieMonster: Many thanks

            • @WookieMonster: Unfortunately it didn't work when I tried to enter the information (with that 457824 number) on Boost app. So, not sure how they claim we can use the card "online" if we can't add on ApplePay nor that we can enter the card info manually as payment method on the App (as most are using App these days)

              • @hny3: Boost is only accepted in-store for the Teens, Students and Eats gift cards.

I think in future we all need to keep in mind that:

                • Some of the participating retailers will accept this card online.
                • Some of the participating retailers will accept this card in-store.
                • Some of the participating retailers will allow the Ultimate gift card to be exchanged for their own gift card through the gift card exchange portal.
      • As mentioned by the OP:

Please note there are two types of Ultimate Gift Cards being sold at retailers, and both types should be eligible for bonus Flybuys points:

Visa gift cards - can be used in-store or online at participating retailers, as well as exchanged for some participating retailers' gift card. This variant can be identified by the fact that the card is hidden inside cardboard packaging.

EFTPOS gift cards - can only be used in-store at participating retailers. This variant can be identified by the fact that the card sits on top of the cardboard packaging.

  • Anyone knows how to add the card to the mobile wallet (ApplePay)? I downloaded the My Prepaid Centre app as they said on iOS, it's only saying "visit the website where you activated the virtual card, select the Add To Wallet, bla-2". I then go to ultimategiftcards.com.au or myprepaidcentre.com.au website, but can't find that Add To Wallet button.

    • I think it’s because that feature is not yet available.

I actually removed references about adding cards to mobile wallets from my post a few days ago, because I noticed the “How To Use My Card” page on the Ultimate gift cards website states the feature is “coming soon”. It doesn’t help the FAQ page states that feature is available…

  • I purchased $100 "Ultimate gift for Him" which shows The Iconic as one of retailers, in order to buy $169 bag.
As I received error msg I had a chat with the rep and was advised that The Iconic does not allow split payment!!
I have nothing else to buy now.

    • +2

I assume you have the Visa Him gift card, not the EFTPOS Him gift card.

According to the Ultimate gift card website, you can exchange your Him gift card for a The Iconic digital gift card. I don’t know how long it will take for you to receive a gift card for The Iconic if you go through this process though!

According to The Iconic’s terms and conditions for gift cards and vouchers, you can use multiple gift cards to pay for an order. With that in mind, you should get a $50 Him gift card at Coles and exchange that for a $50 The Iconic gift card, because you’d get another 1050 Flybuys points.

You should also be able to pay the remainder of the balance owed (e.g. $19, $69) on another payment method (e.g. debit/credit card), but you may want to check that with The Iconic.

      • +2

Thanks so much!! I did not know it worked that way. I had to exchange Him Gift card for The Iconic digital gift card on https://exchangeyourcard.com.au via Ultimategiftcards website. I finally could order the bag:)

*It does not allow me to buy The Iconic Digital Gift Voucher on The Iconic website using the Him Gift Card even after I registered the card with my profile.

  • So if I buy 5x100 gift cards to get 500+5000bonus points only?

  • Can you buy the $100 gift card (1k + 100 pts) & use the gift card for "buy $100 and get XYZ pts" too?

I'm technically not "purchasing" the gift card for the XYZ pts lol

    • +2

If I have understood your question, the answer is no.

I have tried this on many occasions in the last two or so years (because I only really starting buying gift cards towards the end of 2019), and purchases of any gift cards at Coles have never triggered any targeted bonus points offers on my Flybuys account, including:

      • Spend $xx in one transaction and get xyz bonus points offers sent to me via email.
      • Spend $xx in one transaction and get xyz bonus points offers sent to me via those weekly coupons sent in the mail.
      • Get 3x points on a shop of your choice offers sent to me via those weekly coupons sent in the mail.

I actually bought a couple of these gift cards over the weekend, and they did not trigger the weekly coupon I scanned as part of the transaction, even though I exceeded the required minimum spend.

Coles and Flybuys have done a good job ensuring they don’t accidentally award any bonus points from targeted bonus points offers.

      • +1

Thanks for your speedy reply & life examples :)

I had an instance where the prev week's + next week's dates overlapped on the flybuys app - scored 7,600 on a $150 shop!!

Or liquorland had X pts for $50 spend, which had stacked with $50 on Coles online hahaha

Keeping my eye out on the fine print & dates :P

        • +3

That’s fair enough. Just because the fine print says gift cards are excluded does not mean that gift cards are actually excluded!

I was about to update my last comment to say that Woolworths and Everyday Rewards (and sometimes BIG W) are not so careful, and some gift card purchases have triggered targeted bonus points offers in the past, particularly when people have been purchasing gift cards that are new to Woolworths.

          • For example, in the two 30x bonus points offers for Apple gift cards at Woolworths, they triggered targeted bonus points offers.
          • Another example of this was back when the Swap gift cards were relatively new to Woolworths, and triggered a bunch of bonus points offers as well. (This has since been patched.)
          • Another example was when I bought Ultimate gift cards at BIG W over a year ago; I received 4,000 bonus points (as expected) immediately after the transaction was finalised, but I received another 1,000 bonus points about three days later! The only 1,000 bonus points offer on my account was for a $50+ spend at BIG W, and I didn’t make any purchases at BIG W in the weeks before or after the gift card purchase…

I wonder if the new Ultimate (Visa) gift cards will trigger bonus points offers when purchased at Woolworths. They only appeared at Woolworths stores in the last couple of weeks…

          • +1

@WookieMonster: Yes, I received bonus points for Swap gift cards a while back.
