I'm Using a Pixel 6 Pro - AMA

Hi Folks -

Never really played in the forums that much, but thought I'd give it a go to help anyone out.

I have a Pixel 6 Pro and I'm happy for you to AMA…

So far here's my take -

  • Unlock with fingerprint on screen is cool and quite reliable
  • Camera x 0.75 zoom is amazing, seriously how did I not know I needed this feature
  • Android 12 on Google handset is the best combo I've encountered in the Android world
  • Curved edge screen is pretty but can be a touch frustrating for apps with buttons close to / right on edge can be a little sensitive to "touch"

As a callout, I like Pixel / Android but don't work for Google.

I hope I can help answer any questions you may have

Edit - Fixed "esge" vs. "edge" typo

  • Does the camera panel make it feel top heavy, or does it feel balanced in the hand?

    • Balanced in the hand - i think the battery weight might sit down the bottom?

  • What came in the box with the phone?
Is it just the usb c cable with no power adapter or earphones?

  • Did it come with headphones? The Google site said it ships with headphones and a USB c cable in the fine print

    • Mine didn't but it might be an Australian requirement to ship with handsfree still -

    • No headphones. USB-C cable is included.

      • I'm 100% sure it said it came with headphones on the Google site. Can't find it now.

Do you put your phone on the table front (screen) down or back down?

    • +1

      Depends - if I'm with someone, face-down….if solo, face-up

  • I couldn't see if this was asked sorry:

There were some concerns that this doesn't perform as well as non-tensor chip phones (e.g. suspected geekbench scores)

Have you got any numbers or experiences on that?

    • I definitely haven't done the 'technical' on the processor - the uneducated experience for me is that this phone rips - I don't wait for anything, even power-on is quick… A quick google yielded Geekbench have done some legwork here, if you haven't seen this and are more technical than I am, check out - https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/10141287

  • Is it extremely large or only much too large?

  • How is the camera quality?

I'm very tempted to jump and grab one but am waiting for some reviews to come out.

Currently using a 3yo Samsung S10 Plus so either this or the S21 Ultra are going to be a huge upgrade.

    • i'm literally mind blown by the camera - the three lenses and camera zoom in/out is in the "reasons to get this phone"

Check out the magic eraser, I didn't know about this until someone on the thread asked me to try it…

  • JB has a deal to get the 6 for $499 upfront on a Telstra plan, but no similar deal for the Pro.

With that in mind, do you think that the upgrade from the 6 to the Pro would be worth the $800 price difference between the rebated/deal price of the 6?

The main thing that I will be wanting the extra real estate for will be remote game streaming (xCloud/GeForce Now) so the larger screen is very appealing, but don't know if I can justify the massive jump over the very attractive deal from JB/Telstra for the base model 6.

    • Careful - that's on a $69 plan I believe.

Do your homework and find out what you're REALLY paying for the phone over the length of the plan. I know it may seem cheap but…..

I'm just getting the pro with $200 off through Telstra. Works out cheapest for me over 24 months on my lowly $55 plan.

Yes I know I'm not getting 5G on that plan but I live in an area where there's no 5G anyway and on a good day I'm getting over 350Mb/s anyway. I really can't see the point of 3.6Gbps that was just achieved as yet and I can always go up in plan.

I'm already on the $55 plan for the next year at least with Telstra thanks to Xbox All Access. I do see what you're saying though! $14 (difference) * 12 is also adding another $168 to the year. Food for thought, for sure!

      • Just an update on this, the $500 discount is only for new customers to Telstra, not new contracts. So can't even get the good JB deal. Will have to go with the $200 preorder discount from Telstra.

Also got to compare the 6 and 6 Pro side by side, and there's very little difference in terms of size. The Pro is just bezel-less and slightly taller, while the base 6 has a small bezel. The other features of the Pro don't interest me that much, so will likely just opt for the standard 6.

I got the pro from JB for $799 today after porting to the $69 plan.

Interesting - usually those rebates are only available on the lower model. Will enquire tomorrow. Can probably still get $300 for my perfect condition Pixel 4, so that brings out of pocket down to $499.

        • +1

It's a $500 gift card bonus for porting to the plan, so you can use it on anything.

Going to check them out today. Did not realise that! Keen on the pro option. Works out better for what I'm currently on to upgrade.

What colour did you end up going with?

  • Snapchat has this feature on the phone.

Quick Tap to Snap. With the Pixel 6, you can just double-tap the back of your phone — yep, the back, not the screen — and the Snapchat camera will open immediately.

As I don't use Snapchat I was wondering if you're able to make this a shortcut to another app or the actual camera app

  • Great! Thanks for the screenshot. Good to see the other options too

The camera does 4k60. Does it film in 4k60 in telephoto, selfie mode?

If you're on 5g how you finding the speed? You had a pixel 5? I'm pretty sure that had 5g. It'll be interesting to see how good the connectivity/speed is.

I'm liking the look of android 12 and the redesigned quick options.

How you finding the notification on the phone. Anything different? I know my phone has a blinking led light that I keep on. Something that's carried off from my blackberry days.

One of things I loved about my old blackberry was notifications, speakers that you could actually hear the other person and battery life.
It looks like the battery life is good on this.

      No problems

      I don't know - I just tried it and the 4K res is 2160 x 3840 @ 8.3MP - maybe that will help?

Telstra 5G, it's regularly faster than my NBN HFC connection. Not sure over noticed any difference from the Pixel 5 5G to be honest

Personal opinion, they've really ironed out some quirks and creases. Feels really good.

This is probably the most improved function - the volume gives you and expandable menu option to give context over what volume / notification you're changing - music, ringer, alarm etc - it's quite a neat execution on a tricky UI problem…

As far as utility goes, those Blackberry 8900 and thereabouts were absolute machines. Still amazes me how many software features they had ahead of time - Messenger, push email, calendar sync and an OS that didn't suck the lithium from your battery… You'd have to go right back to some earlier Nokia handsets to rival for all round utility

  • I've not had a 5g phone yet but knowing the pixel 6 has all day battery gives me hope the implementation isn't bad and that the speeds are plenty fast. I'm looking forward to swapping providers and getting 5G with this phone.

That's great! Going from the bold 9000 to BlackBerry 10, I've always enjoyed BlackBerry's customisation regarding volume, ringer, alarm so its nice to hear that this has been improved on Android 12 as well as the security! My first foray into android after bb10 was not a great experience in regards to notifications but it has improved over the last few years and it sounds like it's a step up again so that makes me happy!

Spot on, I loved BBM, push emails, and the way everything synced together. I also enjoyed the keyboard, its a shame Nokia and Blackberry capitulated the way that they did because they made great phones!

One last thing, I was watching this iPhone video on YouTube and it was amazing - the cinematography options are cool and it was great to see HDR on there. Can you turn on HDR recording on the pixel 6 videos?

    Thanks again!!

  • Do the new Pixels still have the squeeze function for assistant?

    • +1

No. I believe you now hold the power button.

  • any heating issues while gaming or any heavy work?

    • +1

To be fair, I haven't gamed much - but I give this thing a workout on apps and video - nothing of note on the temperature side.

    • Any android smartphone, after a month begins to slow down a lot
