    • Does this special end tomorrow?

      • Looks like it's still available for that price, I have no idea when it will end.

Farmed Norwegian I bet. Thanks but that's nei.

      • +1

Oh what's the problem with farmed Norwegian Salmon vs the Tassie stuff?

        • +1

The fact that you can tell difference between wild caught and farmed salmon by just looking at the meat for a starter plus questionable use of pesticides that end up in flesh. Not sure about Tasmanian and pesticides use but it's also quite different from wild caught.

          • +6

@[Deactivated]: …. You're aware that salmon from tas is also farmed right? Atlantic Salmon is not native to Australia.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: When was the last time you had wild salmon?

Have a squiz some of the practices of Tassal

            https://animalsaustralia.org/features/fish-farms.php

2kg of wild fish used to produce 1kg Salmon,
            Battery-Chicken style farming
            Swimming in their own poo
Like all farmed Salmon, they're fed dye to make them pink.
Full of whatever is washed into their pens.

            But still tasty!

@M00Cow: You can buy Alaskan wild caught salmon in Australia without any problems, it's not cheap but you get what you pay for. Yes, I know it's a totally different species of fish but it still far superior to any farmed.

Norwegian salmon in particular tastes weird to me and has some unpleasant chemical-ishy aftertaste which Tasmanian salmon does not have.

              • @[Deactivated]: Look at the back of the product shot, it expired 3mth avo! That'd explain the off taste; -)

I had some frozen wild caught Canadian salmon from Costco..i didn't really rate it, it lacked a lot of flavour IMHO. Each to their own. I haven't had frozen Salmon from Europe before, I've had fresh (I believe wild) Salmon in Norway before it was delicious..IMHO Ireland has the best stuff.

                • @M00Cow: Unless you tried pink salmon you just caught yourself in Sakhalin river you have no idea what wild salmon tastes like.

@M00Cow: I'm from Eastern side of Russia. We eat wild caught salmon as people are lazy to build farms , and wild salmon is in abundance coming from northern seas. The price in season is around $4 per kilo for whole fish. If you are lucky you can get one with caviar. Just check for female fish they are slightly different from males.

nothing wrong with Norwegian salmon - they're just pining for the fjords

      • Didn't notice this before but the meat of Coles frozen salmon is definitely darker red and looks artificial - maybe what you are referring to. A few bucks more expensive than that of ALDI but cleaner cut and easier to cleanly unpack. For $14 per kg it's best price I know of.

      • so which is better, this or canned wild caught salmon?

    • How's it taste compared to their fresh one

      • More about it's questionable nutrition

        • +1

I think Junk food has taught us, there's no correlation between Taste & Nutrition.

            • @AH: Wouldn't touch anything sea farmed

              • @TEER3X: You're missing out mate. Most of the Paua and Oysters from NZ are sea farmed and probably the best in the world.

                • @AH: Fair enough, I have eaten oysters at restaurants, so that's probably where they come from. I need to google Paua though. ETA, ah, abalone.

            • @AH: So has Tassie salmon. In fact so has most meat and many fruits & veggies.

But are they actually in quantities that are harmful to humans?

              • @M00Cow: Tassie salmon is fine and I eat that on a weekly basis, even though they use ruminants as a food source. Its the shit water quality which the Norwegian salmon are brought up in which I am concerned about.

Tuna and other big fish are the same, you really don't want too eat too much of it as the mercury does accumulate over time.

    Careful gang. Farmed Norwegian salmon.

Peanut butter though, time to stock up :)

    • Hey mate, just wondering if you could recommend an alternative for frozen fillets (if there is one)?

  • Can you use that salmon to make sashimi?

    • +1

No. You need to cook that frozen salmon for safety.

  • Peanut butter all OOS in my local coles.

  • No Slape and Sons at any of the Coles stores near me :(

  • How does this salmon compare to the ALDI stuff? I forget how much ALDI charges for theirs, is it even a similar price?
