Was in at BigW today and got these prices. They were pretty open about prices which was good. They had this leaflet out on the counter, so to prove that this does not belong in the forums!

why would u engrave it? pretty much kill ur resell value right there!

        • +6
          1. Anti-theft
          2. I don't plan on reselling it.
        • -1

If it's lost or stolen, then it's easy to know where it has gone to if you search Ebay.

          1. To put down something for the person you're gifting it to.
          2. You don't want them to sell it.
        • +1

Maybe engrave it with " coolm*ther " will increse the resale value :-) "

        • +8

          Engrave "Made in California"

          +9999 resale value

  • +2

    they wont have many units…

    • Melb central big w had 40 iPad 2 on launch day. Would assume a few more of these.

  • +1

which stores are opening til midnight on thurs night then ? checked most of my local ones and all closing at 9pm ? im in NSW.

    • ^It'd be nice aswell if someone could give me a list of stores that closest at midnight for VIC

  • -7

You know RUNNING IN ON FIRST RELEASE DAY

    KEEPS PRICES HIGH.

You're shooting yourselves in the feet. :-/

Why should any store discount while people are lined up to buy?!?

You want Deals… You gotta be patient, folks.

    My 2.2 cents…

    • +8

when was the last time apple dropped ipad prices during its time? Ipad 2 price were the same for their run of the course.

we are not talking tv's here. they only drop the price when they release the next version.

    • -2

give the sheep what they want

    • Sorry mate, but you're absolutely wrong. It's not like Big W are going to reduce the price in the first month of having it on sale, no matter how many people line up or not. However, if people keep coming through, months later, and keep sales consistent (people like you) then they aren't going to lower the prices in the next few months either are they? You're better off getting it on day 1

      • +1

not trying to argue but why do you need to get it day one?

        • +2

Same reason you're buying the iPad? Bragging rights? Studies show that there's an exponential increase in coolness when you have the right to say "I had it first, I'm cooler".

          Day 1 - 20 mega Fonzies
Day 2 when a million other people have it - 800 Fonzies

    • Knock $10 off the iPad but make up for it in the accessories and the free advertising (forums like this and possibly TV when they film the crush/queuing).

  • By allowing the retailers to 'discount', is this Apple's strategy to sell 100m units?

    • What is wrong with discounting? Stores should be entitled to charge a low price to maintain competitive pressures on other retailers. Would you rather see everyone charging the same high price?

      • +3

Gees, I wasn't complaining. Just a question…Where did I say there was anything wrong with discounting.

    • There are few items released to market with set prices from the manufacturer, how is this different?

      • Usually Apple do not allow the retailers to budge at all…

        • +2

I thought if retailers sell below a certain price, they get blacklisted = no more stock.

  • -5

can these ipaddy things play youtube and flash video like ninemsn yet?

    • i believe they can play youtube if its embedded into the webpage =)
i know my ipad 1 does

    • +8

      only the Irish versions ;)

    • +18

neg for even mentioning "ninemsn" lol

    • +1

Nope apple will never support flash content as they feel its obsolete. They run purely on HTML 5. Plus it'll lower the idevice speed/battery life by a big margin if they did enable it.

Android will soon follow in the footsteps of ios with Jellybean and Key Lime Pie ditching flash support for HTML 5, or so i read. But it does suck since there are still some websites that run heavy on flash.

But technology will follow the current trend, unfortunately the current trend is apple.

      • +8

Probably has to do with Adobe dropping support for mobile flash.

  • +21

    Further inside info:

    • Those prices are 100% correct - even cheaper with 5% staff discount ;)
    • All Big W stores that are authorised to sell iPads will be selling them.
    • No stores are 'opening' at 12:01am Friday, however some stores will be trading Thursday night beyond the usual 9pm close and trade until 1am that night (i.e. Friday morning). I do not know which stores will be doing this but as far as I know it will only be a very limited number of stores in NSW and Victoria.
    • Majority of stores though will just be opening at their normal trading hours Friday morning and selling the new iPad as soon as the door goes up.
    • Most stores will only receive 5-10 units of each model in each colour. VERY LIMITED STOCK for the launch.
    • Other Apple resellers like Target have similar stock allocations.
    • The iPad 2 is being discontinued EXCEPT the 16GB Wi-Fi/16GB 3G models. These will continue to be sold - the 16GB Wifi will be permanently $398.
    • Waiting lists will be allowed once all stock is sold out (most likely on Friday morning), and further stock should arrive by the following Friday depending on Apple's stock allocations to each store. (Basically the customer puts the new iPad that they want on 'lay-by' and then whenever it comes in they pay it all off).
    • not too much stock

      Yay or Nay?

    • So those stores trading till 1am will they be selling the iPad at 12:01am Friday?

      • +1

Correct. Big W will be the first physical retailer in the country to sell them, even before the Apple store. I just don't know which stores will be doing this (not many).

  • yeah, not expecting much stock.

  • This is pretty awesome, too bad I've already preordered :(

    • You can cancel via the Apple Online Store AFAIK.

      • +1

but then i might miss out altogether :( I just have to be patient. Sucks that they're ~$40 cheaper though

      • +1

but then i might miss out altogether :( I just have to be patient. Sucks that they're ~$40 cheaper though

  • I bought an almost new 32gb iPad old (i.e. v2) for $400 about 6 weeks ago. Quite happy but as it's almost new, what are people's thoughts on upgrading to the iPad New (3)? Really - is it worth it?

    • +2

OCAU had the ipad 1 go for $150. True Story

    • +1

Depends. I have a friend who's happy with his very recently purchased iPad 2. He probably doesn't need the sharper display and isn't going to use it for gaming, so the newer GPU is wasted on him. If you can live with this, then by all means get the iPad 2. It's still probably the best tablet you can get for $400 now.

Me? I think such a huge jump in screen resolution is well worth the $100 or so premium. It's like comparing a 3GS to iPhone 4 screen, it's night and day. Plus Apple tends to do major revisions every 2 years. The iPad 4 probably won't be a huge jump on this newest model.

    • +1

Tegra 2 vs Tegra 3. I'd pay the extra to have neon scripts on my graphics for high def plaback. I've seen ipad 2s struggle with playing back 720p mkv's.

      • +1

Probably more the way they encoded is the issue. I have no issues with 720p h264 encoded on my iPad 1 or even streaming it over network.

        • +1

Well yeah that too. Most devices will just play mkvs or anything natively. I don't wanna have to go and convert everytime I wanna upload stuff to my tablet.

  • +1

Ohhh. Is anyone working in Canning Vale or Riverton WA stores?? Pls help me get one at -5%!
    I'll shout brekky :)

  • +1

Good bargain, and its nice to see competitive innovation in the market. Can't wait to see the response from Android tablet developers.

  • +1

Can i ask if woolworths employees get 5% off ??

    • +2

Yes, anyone that holds a Woolworths Limited staff discount card or a Woolworths Limited 25-Year-Club discount card.

      • +1

        thank you!!

      • +1

How do we apply for one of these cards?

or only way is to work for woolies..?

        • +2

Work for Woolworths Limited or become close family with someone that already works for Woolworths Limited :P

        • +5

          Notice the word 'Staff'.

  • +1

Box Hill, Forest Hill, etc. What time do you reckon we need to get there to get one?

    • +1

Ring up the store Thursday to check if they are trading until 1am or not because the stores that are doing this don't have these extended trading hours posted on the website as far as I know… If they're not, then just be there as the doors go up at 8:30am…

  • +1

so we can get 5% off for staff members as well as another 5% if purchasing using GIFT wish card? can anyone confirm this? thats 10% off!!

    • +2

Sort of correct. You can get a maximum $500 WISH gift card at 5% off from various RACQ/union shopper sites = $475… and then just the regular staff discount 5% off the iPad price in-store. But I doubt you'd able to purchase and get delivered the 5% discounted WISH gift cards in time for Friday.

      • hahaha, i have been searching those websites that sell the Wish gift card at 5% discount for ages (at least the last couple of days) Thanks for the info, will save it for future Ipad purchase :P

  • +1

Just wondering why you take the photo in a mirror?

    • +1

That's an Encryption App you can get for 99c

  • +1

anyone price match from the chaddy apple store recently? is their price matching still a go?

  • +1

man apple people get excited pretty easy - not much discount except for the big one….i wouldnt get outta bed early for it…time is money too

  • +26

    To summarise:

Model Apple Price BigW Price Savings (%)
    16GB WiFi $539.00 $498.00 $41.00 (7.61%)
    16GB WiFi/4G $679.00 $668.00 $11.00 (1.62%)
    32GB WiFi $649.00 $628.00 $21.00 (3.24%)
    32GB WiFi/4G $789.00 $778.00 $11.00 (1.39%)
    64GB WiFi $759.00 $748.00 $11.00 (1.45%)
    64GB WiFi/4G $899.00 $858.00 $41.00 (4.56%)

I was hoping for a good saving on 32GB WiFi/4G but looks like I should shell out for a 64GB WiFi/4G…. you know, for the savings!

    • what about how much saving from kogan price?

is kogan warranty, we can send back to apple or kogan?

taking it back to big w is a much easier option..

      • Pretty sure the warranty is provided by Apple wherever you get it, so it's just a matter of going to an Apple store. Don't quote me on this though..

      • +21

Geez, what am I? Your OzB fairy godfather?

Model Apple Price Kogan Price Savings (%)
        16GB WiFi $539.00 $508.00 $31.00 (5.75%)
        16GB WiFi/4G $679.00 $628.00 $51.00 (7.51%)
        32GB WiFi $649.00 $598.00 $51.00 (7.86%)
        32GB WiFi/4G $789.00 $728.00 $61.00 (7.73%)
        64GB WiFi $759.00 $698.00 $61.00 (8.04%)
        64GB WiFi/4G $899.00 $818.00 $81.00 (9.01%)

Will still be shopping from BigW over Bogan just in case I get dead pixels. Easy return policy is appreciated.

EDIT: Fixed table to include $29.00 for shipping

        • +2

Dead pixel replaced at apple store doesn't matter where you get it from.

        • +7

Lol dead pixels. But according to their marketing, you probably shouldn't be able to see dead pixels even if they were there.

      • The warranty is provided by apple wherever you go, at any Apple store around the world. A friend got one from Shopping Square and a few months later it stuffed up, took it back to the Apple store and they replaced it for free (since it was still on warranty). It's only 1 year warranty unless you purchase applecare though, which will extend it to 3 years.

        • +1

$29.94 for Big W 2 year extended warranty.

    • -3

I think these discounts are unlikely. Partly because the percentages are not consistent but also because a 7% discount on the first day of sale is too much. More likely would be an $11 or 1.5% discount on the whole range.

iPads are discounted less often and by smaller amounts than other Apple products which are often available discounted by 10%. There have been reports that the iPad retail margin is as low as 3%:
      http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/hiner/the-ipads-other-big-a…

While margins could be slightly better in Australia, they'd still be consistent over the product range so these prices would lead to Big W making far less on the base model and possibly a loss. Is there sufficient benefit to Big W to motivate this?

      • +1

just dont goto BIGW then. thanks for save 1 for the others

  • +1

    Hi

Do people think 4g/3g worth the extra cost?

what sort of dataplans are good value for money?

    ==

    Also
what are tablet competition to the ipad3?
only one I can see right now is the transformer prime…

is it selling in oz yet? and would that be better or ipad 3 better choice…

What are the chances of the jailbreak for ipad 3 later on? what fw comes with the ipad 3?

I like apple, but without jailbreak the device is good but not excellent..

    • +1

transformer prime is out here " oz " check here for availability and price http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1857529&p…

And do a bit of research on both tablets , also make a checklist of what you want it to do as they are very different in what they can do.

    • +1

The ipad3 isn't compatible with Telstra's 4G network, so you can't even use 4G on it at the moment. You can access Telstra's HSPA network which is the one faster than 3G. Telstra is the only one with 4G network publicly available at the moment, and only in the major cities as well.

    • +3

I dont see a point in paying extra for a 3G/4G model.

      1) If you have a pretty recent phone on a plan/cap, just use that as a wifi hotspot. I get 1.5gb a month on my tpg mobile plan and i really cant justify paying for more internet when mine costs like $15 a month

      2) 4G on this device was made for the US market, not Australia. Our frequencies are not the same, Telstra or other telco's would need to buy the 700mhz frequency that is currently being used by Free to air analog television. I think this is planned to be decommissioned and auctioned sometime in 2013 (might be a new ipad with better 4g support).

There's a new wave of android devices that's packing resolutions of 1900x1200 (Transformer infinity) and rumours of a Samsung 11.6 tablet with 2600x1600 resolution.

Im thinking about getting an iPad but i dont like being stuck in apple's garden. I find ipads just too limited with no flash, no widgets and no usb support for hard drives then theres transferring stuff using itunes cringe.

Im all for android but my uni doesnt yet support wifi connection with android devices, and its just convenient that vodafail has absolutely no connection in my campus.

      • +1

To quote krisspy I find ipads just too limited with no flash, no widgets and no usb support for hard drives then theres transferring stuff using itunes cringe.

I agree Ios is quite restrictive but very smooth and i guess aimed at low tech low fuss people who just want to press a button and it works " thats what it does best " .

Android i feel is still a bit of a geek techcy os which is more open but less intuitive but with way more expandability and customisation options " lauchers , roms etc " but in the end android and Ios need each other to push tablets even further at what they do , and we benefit from that as a consumer.

        • +1

          Let's clarify that,

Apple - hipster product, point n click. no control

Apple is designed for point and click, except that it makes it very difficult to get things on/off your device unless they are purchased through iTunes. As an example, I tried to put on a particular song that iTunes didn't like for some reason (even though iTunes would play it perfectly). it took me two days to get this song on to my iPhone. iTunes would play the song, but would only copy 1/2 of it. Because you can't just copy stuff on/off your phone - you have NO control. Search "can't copy song to iphone" if you want to read many instances of this same bug. (note: my solution was to use a 3rd party product to transfer the song and then turn off music syncing in iTunes - not what you'd call point 'n click).

Android - geek product, more like a mini pc. High level of control

On the other hand, my wife has an Android phone. She simply selected the "music" directory on our NAS, selected copy and paste, and voilais! The whole music collection was copied far quicker than iTunes ever would. The fact that you have USB ports and memory card slots speaks volumes for Android devices.

Overall, Android is a lot more flexible and you can do pretty much what you want with your device and data.

          Summary

Apple, more apps, works when it works, awful when it doesn't (although that's rare).
          Android, less apps, flexible.

Overall, I find the Apple experience very frustrating, Android's a little underbaked.

        • +1

Dude, Adobe said no flash will ever come to mobile. No mobile OS will have flash ever.

      • +1

wow that is pathetic if you cannot even use wifi on android devices, how hard can it be to implement that. all other wifi connections allow any devices :S

        • +1

Its just my UNI hires fresh graduates to set up their infrastructures (im guessing).

When I started out 2 years ago, they actually didnt have IOS support, not sure about android back then. Thats when I relied on my iphone 3G S to check for my unit materials.

Now they've made a new wifi network which has full support for IOS devices and only partial for android (partial meaning facebook and gmail apps have connection but not the browsers). Just in time for when I jumped ship over to the green side.

Something to do with their ports.

      • +1

my uni doesnt yet support wifi connection with android devices

That does not make sense. Wifi is a standard: If the AP is compliant, it should work with all compliant devices. Encryption shouldn't be an issue if it's WEP/WPA/WPA2.

Most likely, it's proxy settings. There are ways around that.

    • +1

if you have a smart phone you can use as a hotspot, then NO definately not worth paying extra. Just get the wifi model and if you need 3G use your smartphone as a hotspot.

  • +1

Good Luck for anyone who can get this price matched on day one…

They (other then bigw) will be selling these things by the truck load while your there trying to negotiate a price match.

    doesn't hurt trying tho ;).

  • +1

Just wondering, for the 5% discount of Woolworths Staff card, does that "staff" need to be the purchaser or it can be anyone who holds the card? Can someone helps me on this please :)?
I don't really wanna trouble my mate at 6am to come to bigW and line up with me :P

    • +1

      someone, anyone :) ?

      • +1

I think woolies policy has been really strict regarding usage of staff cards. You have to be discrete, very discrete

        • +1

The policy is if they find you using someone else's card, they will confiscate it…my advice is to find the youngest person at the checkout, they won't check…it's only the older ones that will check!

    • +1

If you're gonna spam… at least make it so that its the same product as the thread?

  • +1

So the dilemma is, if I do line up for an iPad on Friday, do I go to Big W or JBHifi… I don't believe either will release their stock levels before the stores open.
