Truggy version of well-reviewed HBX 16889a Pro: https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/hbx-16889a-pro-review…

Supposedly exactly the same as the HBX 16889a Pro, but with different wheels and body/wing.

Geared for acceleration, not top speed. Unlikely to go over 40km/h, but plenty fast enough for bashing. Long run time, no heat issues, and supposedly low maintenance. From all reports, it should be tough enough to survive my 6 year old.

Currently being ozbargained on quadifyrc's facebook group.

    • it shows 16 before I purchase mine, and it still shows 16 now, so I will say it is not a LIVE update.

  • Can I ask what's special about this car over other cheaper and good looking cars, except faster?

    • +2

Brushless motor at this price is great. It means less heat, quieter, much longer battery life. This car is also reportedly tougher than others in the bracket eg Wltoys 144001, so won't break as easily.

      • Thanks for your reply!

        • No problem. Also, while this is pretty fast, it's certainly not the fastest in this class. This car excels as a "basher" (driving it off-road, doing jumps etc). If you want an on road speed car, there are much better choices.

  • +1

I already have a unhealth RC addiction.. this just makes it even harder 😅 although I've never been a fan of the Chinese 'grade' of hobby cars. The name brands Traxxas / Yokomo / XRay + RPM accessories will last a lifetime & imo worth the extra. Of course for kids its a different story.. Just buy some common break point parts when u buy the car so you're not waiting for 1 month due to a snapped a-arm or something.

    • To be honest, these look pretty hard to break.

    • Any idea where I can buy a decent servo motor (cheap Chinese preferred 😂) and replacement controller ? The ones that came with the Target Hot Wheels 1:10 Cybertruck is cr@p.

      • Aliexpress, Banggood, Ebay or Amazon. No idea how you'll find one compatible with a random Target car though.

  • looks fun! first proper RC. thanks OP!

  • Can anyone recommend a dedicated charger for the lipo's in addition to the USB one included?

    • +1

I dont have one, but it seems that the IMAX B6 is pretty popular. QuadifyRC recommends the ISDT chargers: https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/a-better-charger-for-…
I got the 608AC. Bit pricey, and it needs a adapter to work with the batteries for cars like these (the batteries are deans/t-plugs, but the charger is XT60).

      • Yeah, I have a ISDT Q6 Nano. Great charger but it's 12 volt DC, so you need a power supply to run it. And yes they have xt60 connectors so you'll need an adapter to charge lipos with Deans plugs.

  • looks fun!

  • Bummer!
Looks like it has been ozbargained.
(error: This coupon is not available for limited offer products)

    • still working for me?

      $79 US

  • Which of these RC cars would work best on a beach?

    • +1

What are the options? There's only 1 here. I wouldn't drive any of them on a beach anyway. Sand and corrosion will kill them quickly.

  • Was just about to buy it then saw it was 1/16 scale…. I wish it was a little bigger!

    • +1

Check out Quadifys page (link in the main post). He reviewed the larger version recently.

      • hahahaI was just reading it. Has some awesome reviews and insights.

This 1/12 scale reads very well. https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/hbx-901a-review-durab…

Not looking for top speed. I want acceleration and battery life in a larger car (much more stable).
Will hold out for a better discount code though… $130 US just a tad too expensive for my OzBargain blood :).

  • +1

thanks OP ordered one for the grandkids

  • Can anyone link to purchase some 'big' batteries and a proper/faster charger for this car? I am totally new to RC but have just purchased one for my son. Thanks. Thanks OP for the post.

    • As discussed above, you won't fit bigger batteries without modding, and they probably aren't needed anyway.

      • I mean larger capacity but same size battery, like aaa-size rechargeable batteries vary on capacity.

        • This isn't really a thing with lipo batteries. Generally as capacity increases size does too. You might find a 1100mah or 1200mah that fits but the different in run time will be negligible. If you want longer play time, just get more stock batteries and change them over when they run flat. I suspect you'll find that the play time you get from 2 lipos will generally be enough for a session anyway. After about half an hour you will have run out of things to drive over, jump over, race around etc anyway.

        • So the guys on one of Quadifys facebook groups are saying the 1500mah battery that the WLToys 144001 comes with (blue case) fits. I'd say that's about as big as you'll get. https://au.banggood.com/Wltoys-7_4V-1500mAh-25C-2S-Lipo-Batt… Not great value at ~ $30 shipped, though.

          • @wombat81: Quadify says this in his review too. I obviously missed that when I read it the first time…

  • 60 kph is bound to excite

  • Brings back memories. I was big into R/C 15 years or so ago when brushless/lipo was first making its mark. Be careful its a bug. I had mostly HSP cars back then, this brand reminds of them. Cheap, fast and pretty durable. One lesson I learnt early on was to get a cheap programmable transmitter, where you can infinitely adjust the throttle/brake EPA etc. This means you can dial it back to any power percentage at any time for kids when they are learning etc. Will save on a lot of broken parts until they get good and need to go fast. It also means you can by extra receivers and bind the transmitter to 5+ vehicles, so you don't have to maintain a box full of transmitters. I had everything from 1/64 scale to 1/5 scale electric, and found 1/16 and 1/8 the best.

    • +1

The stock transmitter has a throttle trim knob.

      • EPA (end point adjustment) is what you need, not trim. Can go anywhere from 0 - 100% rather than just adjusting the zero point.

        • I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what it has.

          • +1

@wombat81: That's great. Analogue EPA is worthwhile for sure, but I found it was usually only adjustable between around 80-100%. Whereas digital EPA can go anywhere from 0-100%. This along with EXPO to adjust the curves, and the multiple model memory was well worth the 40 bucks for a digital TX for me. But if this will be your only car, not worth it.

  • Looks like some good cheap fun for $112. Will give it a go.
I remember having a remote control car when I was about 10 and it sucked.
Like 8 minutes of battery life, low power and cost as much as this.

Do you guys think it is possible to mount a Gopro on this?

    • Yeah I'd say it'd be doable. Maybe with cable ties or something.

    • Yes but it'd be top heavy. Be careful not to roll the car on a hard surface and damage the camera. Been there, done that.

  • +1

    Just purchased with code BGVEHICLE30
    $76.99USD = $105.02AUD 28degrees

    Got it for cheaper somehow?

Hey guys if you found my review useful or the fact I originally got the link for my FB group, please consider using the affiliate link from my review page or coupon page. It doesn't cost you anything but it helps me cover my hosting fees and the parts I buy for reviews. Or not, that is fine also.

Once again here is the review:

    https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/hbx-16889a-pro-review…

And the coupons and discounts where I share they deals I get:

    https://www.quadifyrc.com/coupons.html

    • Thanks mate, I read your reviews and bit the bullet and got 2 of these, 1 for me and 1 for my dad for Christmas.

Your excitement in the post pushed me over the line to buy one.

  • Thanks Sclyde2 I grabbed one, thanks also to quadifyrc for the great review.

  • Says Arrival notice, out of stock?

    • Yep, it is out of stock at the CN warehouse.

    • Great now I dont have to buy another rc car.

  • How often is this kind of deal? Missed out!

    • This was the deal of the year. It'll come on sale again, but I doubt it'll be this good. I'll be surprised if we see a decent brushless RC for this price again anytime soon.

  • +1

I'm trying to see if they can allocate more stock but it looks like they got Ozbargained pretty hardcore. Will start a new thread and link here if they do.

Some other options here I'll try keep updated for cars I've reviewed: https://www.quadifyrc.com/coupons.html

    • +3

Sorry folks that is indeed it for this car. They still have some in the US warehouse but all of the ones in the Chinese warehouse that ship to Australia are gone. If you need spare parts understand this is a rebranded brushless HBX 16889a pro and parts are readily available on Banggood, Aliexpress etc.

      • Thanks for the update. Any idea what shipping times will be like for these?

  • For anyone looking to run larger capacity lipos, there is this 3D printable mount, although it would raise the centre of gravity significantly, I'd imagine, resulting in much easier rolling. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4958143

  • For anyone who is feeling bummed that they missed out, I see there are 9 units available from Aliexpress for ~ $128 shipped, which is still a great price for this car. It's only the single battery version though. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003221625818.html

  • recommendation for a charger, please?

      • If I purchase https://au-m.banggood.com/ISDT-Q6-Nano-BattGo-200W-8A-Lipo-B…, do I need an adapter to charge the batteries coming with flyhal??

Also is the battery connector which comes with the flyhal xt60?

        • +1

It's an American power supply, but it should work. The power supply says it supports 240V. You'll obviously need an AU travel adapter, though. Just one thing to note that the max output of that power supply is 5A. The Q6 Nano handles 8A max input, so it wouldn't be able to charge at it's top rate with that power supply.

But yes, you'll need an adapter for the lipos since the FC600 lipos have a Deans connector and the ISDT chargers have an XT60 plug. It needs to be male Deans to female XT60. Something like this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/122085475187

          • @wombat81: Whats your recommendation for ac input to isdt q6?

            • @HL2: This one will work fine. It's probably not worth searching further for the small increase in performance. But a laptop power supply that outputs 8A or more, with an XT60 connector added, would be ideal.

Thinking further, I don't actually know if the 5A input would limit performance. You'd only be charging at 1C anyway which would be well below 5A. So it probably isn't even an issue.

I personally use a Ctek car battery charger which has a 12v power supply mode to power my Q6 Nano. It outputs 15A. But that would be a very expensive solution for this specific purpose at around $400. I just happened to already have it for charging my camper trailer batteries before I got into RC.

  • Couple of questions.

    1. Can you use something like a Nitecore D4 charger on these batteries (say if you rigged up the wiring)?

    2. Can anyone do up a quick recommended spare parts list for items that are likely to break (based on the fact that it's a rebranded brushless HBX 16889a pro)?

    Thanks!

    • +1

I'm yet to hear of anyone breaking anything on either model to date. A guy on one of the forums said his controller was playing up. I saw another guy strip a crown gear, but he was running 3s lipos, so that's not surprising. Another guys ESC died, but that was a bit mysterious.

Some spare wheel nuts would be worth having. They do come off and get lost. I guess you could keep a diff gear kit in case you blow a diff. Perhaps front lower suspension arms if you hit something hard wheel first. And the assembly that the wheels attach to. Dog bones maybe? A drive shaft? But they're all guesses. It's a Murphy's Law situation. You could have a heap of spares but it's always the thing you don't have that fails.

I would be spending money on a decent charger, lipo bag etc before any of that.

    • +1

I can't see a D4 charger being of any use. It doesn't mention that it supports lipo chemistry for a start. It needs to be a specific lipo charger with a balancing function and storage function as a minimum.

  • My order still shows shipped out with no further tracking updates. Anyone seeing their shipping status getting updated?

    • +1

Mine is the same. It's not uncommon that shipping info from China ceases once the item has been shipped and it'll magically appear at your house one day.

      • Yeah, I think that's the case. 17track couldn't figure out the provider either.

        • Mine is now showing on 17track!!

    • +2

Based on my recent orders from banggood (CN warehouse), it seems the notification after the "shipped" notification usually appears 12 days later, but one came in after 8 days. you should expect it to take around 20 days total from order to receiving it.

      • Do they arrive by AusPost ? If so, they're taking 20 days with local packages at the moment… who knows how long the international queue is 😁

        • I ordered the Wltoys 124019 in a past deal. Ordered 9.9 delivered 10.9 metro Melbourne.

        • These seem to be coming via Aramex/Fastway.

  • My tracking is showing up on 17 track now. Apparently it arrived in Sydney yesterday.

  • +3

I found mine on my doorstep this morning. So, it took 10 days since ordering. That is probably a record from the CN warehouse.

    • Had a blast yet?

      • +1

no, I bought this for xmas for my six year old son.

        • Yeah, mine's a present too :-( Should have ordered two.

  • +4

    Mine arrived today.

  • +2

    got mine today !

    • Mines apparently been sitting in Sydney since Thursday :(

      • Same as mine. Anyone received theirs in Melbourne yet?

        • I'm in Melbourne and mine is still in Sydney too :(

        • Mine just arrived today… Now I just need my charger to arrive!

          • +1

@masuta: Will you not use the included usb charger @masuta?

    • Did yours come with 2 batteries? Mine has just one battery in it.

      • There should be one in a box and one placed in the car.

  • Does anyone have recommendation for grease for the diffs? I’ve been looking for white lithium grease as I see that has been recommended a number of times but struggling to find some in none aerosol form in Australia

    • +1

just any auto or marine grease is fine. Just whatever Supercheap have on special.

  • So this has now spurred something else and I was looking at the HBX901A? POssibly the WLT 1041009 however from Quadrify's post says it is quite susceptible to damage?

Anybody else had a look at these particular trucks?

  • Got mine today. Apart from wishing it was a bit bigger, I only found one battery in a small white paper box in the accessories bag. Wondering if you guys got 2 batteries?

    • The second battery should be installed in the car already.

    • +1

I got two batteries in the box (don't remember how it was packed).

As a side note, this little thing is heaps of fun and seems to take a beating! I am already on the look out for spare parts - my front bumper has lost a lot of plastic haha! Not sure the easiest way to find them though.

      • +2

Banggood or Aliexpress will be the main place to find spares, and you may need to search for 16889a pro parts rather than FC600 parts since they're the same vehicle under the shell.

        • Thanks for the tip! Will definitely need some new parts sooner or later.

  • Thanks OP mine got delivered at 6:45am this morning. Time to wrap it up for the Christmas tree

    • Nice. Where is Australia are you?

  • Mine’s been onboard for delivery for 3 days now 🤬

    • Mine's been in processing in Sydney for over 7 days now…

      • Out for delivery today.
