Truggy version of well-reviewed HBX 16889a Pro: https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/hbx-16889a-pro-review…

Supposedly exactly the same as the HBX 16889a Pro, but with different wheels and body/wing.

Geared for acceleration, not top speed. Unlikely to go over 40km/h, but plenty fast enough for bashing. Long run time, no heat issues, and supposedly low maintenance. From all reports, it should be tough enough to survive my 6 year old.

Currently being ozbargained on quadifyrc's facebook group.

  • Dumb question… the USB thingo in the picture is a charger, yeah? Or is that an interface to play with throttle curves?

    • +1

yes, most RTR (ready to run) RC come with a basic charger, that runs off USB.
EDIT: As for "throttle curves", I am guessing that you are referring to ESC programmability. I am not sure if the ESC is programmable in this RC car. I suggest you google the
HBX 16889A PRO - it has the same ESC and has been around a little longer, so you might get more info going that route.

      • Yeah, it's been ages since I looked at RC stuff. Last time I had something like this, the Mamba brushless stuff had a USB interface that would let you change the throttle curve…
Thanks! I don't really need to modify the throttle curve, I was more making sure that it had a charger in there. Very tempted to get one for the kids and I to bash around with.

        • you probably want speed limit for your when your kid is having a go :)

I once clicked one of these and banggood is forever recommending it to me ever since lmao. Time to clear the cache.

        • Blast from the past. I still have my 1/8 and 1/5th scale Mamba Monster stuff. But I used a cheap programmable transmitter with EPA/EXPO adjustments for throttle curves etc as it can be adjusted real time and for any model with any ESC, not just the smart ESC's.

  • It's jumped to $104.99 USD

    • +1

Did you put the coupon code in?

      • Ahh. Good point.

    • +1

No it hasn't - the coupon code is BGVEHICLE30

  • Once products gets on OZB, prices quickly increase :o

    • it is still showing the same price as I posted above.

    • +1

I just ordered at the price listed, it hasn't increased

    • +3

I wasnt even looking for an RC, but given its my birthday soon, I convinced myself.. i love ozbargain.

  • +4

Brushless, oil shocks, metal drive shaft and cups, real metal gears. Looks like a keeper.

  • Thanks OP! Grabbed two! 1 for a Chrissy present and 1 for me :)

  • Anyone have suggestions for a 6 year old?

Have bought some from Kmart in the past and they have lasted a few days at best.

    Budget $100 or less.

    • WLtoys 12428

    • +3

if you can stretch another 10 bucks, i doubt you'll find anything better than this around this price - unless you are looking for something slow, e.g. a crawler. i have seen vids of a 5-6 year old repeatedly jumping and crashing a HBX 16889a - it looks like it can take some abuse.

    • +13

I don't think you'll have much luck buying a 6 year old from Kmart.

      • Agreed, they're all too busy working.

    • Stretch the $10 bucks and get this. All reports are that it's much, much tougher than the Wltoys cars and the brushless setup means much better battery life and less heat issues.

      • Just to clarify, get this as in Flyhal FC600?

    • +1

For a 6yo I strongly recommend this one:

      https://au-m.banggood.com/Eachine-EAT06-Remote-Control-Tank-…

(I have the SG1203, which I think is the same thing.

6yo really struggle to coordinate forward movement and turning at the same time. This one turns on the spot, which is much easier. At 6 my kids didn't really control normal cars properly.

I've got a heap of cars and am constantly repairing and ordering new parts. This is the car my kids drive the most, and I've never had to repair it. It's because most cars are built too powerful for their build quality. This tank is great because it isn't powerful enough to tear itself apart. Just don't upgrade it to steel treads.

Runs for ages on stock battery because it isn't too powerful, and has a large battery bay to put bigger batteries in (if you are into it, lipo batteries give it a bit more zip, but the li ion batteries it comes with are fine. Plus li ion are heaps safer.)

      Tossing up buying a spare…

It's heaps of fun to drive in the bush too.

      Good luck.

      • Thank you very much, that is some very good advice!

Will definitely check it out and look at some reviews.

        • +1

Got this one for my daughter for her 6th birthday. It’s great fun and hard to get stuck. Doesn’t go super fast, so is great for indoor and is pretty durable. Charging can be a pain in the butt as you need to take the battery out.

          • @kumquat: I'm guessing recharging is like that to make it more water resistant? Agree, toys like that are a pain though.

            • @shbshb: No, it's because lipo batteries are inherently unstable. They are able to discharge large amounts of current quickly and that makes them a fire risk. If your lipo goes bang, you don't want it in your car at the time, and charging is when that's most likely to happen.

              • @wombat81: Oh… So next to my bed while I sleep probably isn't the best idea then

                • @chriise: Nailed it. Inside a lipo bag in an open area on a non-flammable surface and don't plan on being too far away while the charging happens. Never store your lipos fully charged or fully discharged. You ideally want a charger that has a storage function (like the ISDT chargers) so you can store your lipos safely and the correct level.

                  • @wombat81: Ok srs question can you recommend a decent charger for these that will let me charge safely? How will I keep them from charging fully? I bought one of the WLToys models a couple months ago and it wasn't until both batteries ran flat that I realised I didn't have the means to charge them.

                    • +1

@chriise: I use a ISDT Q6 Nano charger. Quadify also likes the ISDT chargers. Problem is that they are 12 volt DC chargers, so you need a power supply to run them. So if you go that way make sure you get one with a power supply. People also like the SkyRC iMax chargers, but there are lots of fakes around so buy from a reputable dealer.

                      • @wombat81: Thanks. I’ll do my google searching over the weekend :-)

                        • @chriise: Edit: sorry, misread the thread, just realised you were not talking about the tank. I'll leave the below so people know the stock tank batteries are not lipo.

The battery in the tank is li-ion, not lipo. It's safe as. Don't need to worry about explosions and storage voltages, and the USB charger is fine. You can use lipo if you want, but do some learning first - it's a fair bit more hassle (not rocket science though). The li-ion battery is fine and runs for ages. I rarely need to put in the lipo unless there's a few kids playing all day with it.

Yes you need to take the battery out to charge, but if that annoys you you can drill a small hole and pass the charging connector up into the cabin. Then you can connect the charger without opening up the battery bay.

                          Have a good one.

  • +2

Really fantastic deal for a brushless setup and two batteries. Dont need one, but bought it anyways … great Xmas present.

  • Awesome thank you, perfect for my son's 7th birthday coming up shortly.

  • Thanks ordered one!

  • you reckon it would be ok to use this on sand? or would that just be asking for trouble.

  • Does this go well over grass?

    • +1

      33km/h I saw on yt

    • +1

It would depend on the grass. Short grass, totally fine, but it's a relatively small RC so long grass won't be so good.

  • +1

Awesome, thanks OP. Got one. Hoping it gets here before Xmas.

  • +6

how does this compare with my 1986 Jet Hopper?

    • +2

      This works for starters!

    • I had something similar around that era, was damn fun until my older brother slammed it in to a wall and broke steering, patched it up for a while.

      • Had someone drive my Jet Hopper Turbo onto the road. It got run over but was surprisingly undamaged. I’d like to think the RC cars you can buy now are that tough.

  • Is 10-15 min runtime fairly standard?

    • for this sized battery yes but you can order a bigger capacity battery off ebay and getter a much better run time.

      • I don't think a physically bigger battery fits in this car without mods, fyi.

        • Bigger capacity, not size.

          • @merriweather: You won't get much bigger capacity without going to a bigger size.

            • @wombat81: Stock battery will get you 15-20 minutes. The footprint of the battery you can fit is small so unless you modify heavily you can't fit a bigger battery. Wit that said the stock battery has excellent run time

          • @merriweather: So the guys on one of Quadifys facebook groups are saying the 1500mah battery that the WLToys 144001 comes with (blue case) fits. I'd say that's about as big as you'll get. https://au.banggood.com/Wltoys-7_4V-1500mAh-25C-2S-Lipo-Batt… Not great value at ~ $30 shipped, though.

            • @wombat81: Quadify says this in his review too. I obviously missed that when I read it the first time…

  • Ordered one earlier and came to post the deal but it's already here. Should be a good replacement basher for my Wltoys 144001 which now has a burnt out ESC/motor.

    • +1

If you haven't already, join my FB group. There is like someone on your side of the ditch with a spare one after upgrading to brushless. I have about 4 or 5 sitting around but am in NZ

      • Thanks but it's all good. Just keeping it as a parts car for my sons 144001.

  • +1

any options to add extra batteries with it ( on top of the 2 )

  • great deal! I was looking at this the other day for $140. Thanks OP :)

  • Thanks Op, bought one. The code works $110

Never actually bought one of these although I've seen the WLToys deals a few times. Think I already know the place where I could introduce this to my son.

  • Thanks OP . $108.02 mastercard charged.

  • Thanks OP - Xmas shopping done although I’m sure this will be opened up earlier

  • great truck, I have an older 16889 and it's plenty of fun.

I did break one of the shocks so currently waiting on a set of oil filled shocks.

  • got one, thanks op. Got charged $108.

  • Thanks for the post, always so hard to know what has real upgrades and what is decent value!

I have a cheaper but faster car from a few years ago, great fun but full of plastic, spent lots in upgrade parts but never have the time to rebuild it.

Ordered, my sons and I will enjoy this :)

  • How do I contact this rep. I have received a dead product from a deal posted here. I need support.

  • Thanks op! Christmas is sorted.

  • Didn’t need it but just ordered to play with the kids :)

  • +6

Hey folks, as the OP noted, the review I wrote on the HBX 16889a Pro is here. It is practically identical, I've outlined the small differences in the article:

    https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/hbx-16889a-pro-review…

And the link to the original discount I shared (with other discount RC cars as well) is here:

    https://www.quadifyrc.com/coupons.html

If you want to discuss this and other cheap and cheerful RC cars I have a group on facebook that is easy to find.

    • Hey mate, any chance you'd have a code for the WLToys 124019 perhaps? Didn't see one on the site. (rep on Ozbargain has stopped responding to PM).

  • Bought - thanks OP - this is the first "real" RC car for the "kids"

  • Hi guys, I want to buy this for my 5 year old, just wondering, is the speed adjustable? Can I set the max speed to say 10-15 kmph

    • Dunno, but you could probably hot glue something behind the trigger to prevent full power.or drill in a little screw behind trigger that you can adjust?

      • Zip ties?

    • The picture of the controller shows speed as an adjustable setting

    • +2

Yes, it has a throttle control knob

    • +6

Yes, there is a throttle dual rate which allows you to scale the max throttle between 0 and 100%. It is brilliant till the kids figure out how to use the dial. My 9 year old has figured it out but not my 5 year old

  • Does this particular model have a good resale value?

    • +2

It hasn't existed very long so that's hard to answer, but since cars like this are cheap to begin with, you wouldn't be buying it with resale in mind. There's no point spending $75 on a second hand one when you can get a brand new one for $110.

  • Few queries. Is it possible to pair an old style dual stick control with this car? Would I need to replace the receiver to do this? Can you recommend a cheap stick controller that I could pair with this?

    • By stick do you mean like the radios used for quads/fixed wings?

Radios usually have their transmission protocol labelled on the product page. Eg. If you have a flysky remote you can just get a flysky receiver and replace the one on this rc car.

Never heard of this brand before, highly doubt anyone would have their transmission protocol included in a multi-protocol radio.

  • Bought 2 , why who knows but should be fun with my kid

    • +2

      That's why. Nailed it.

      • It helps that the red truggy we bought when COVID hit in 2020 has just died.

  • +13

I woke up with no intention of buying a $100+ RC car today yet here we are.

    • +1

      Lol same here

    • +1

LOL. Same here. Should be lots of fun for Christmas

  • +3

Like most of the Ozbargainers here, I have no idea why I just bought an RC Car LoL

  • Is this much smaller than the 144001?

    • +2

see quadify's review - l have linked it in the post. About 3rd photo in the review, the HBX 16889a Pro (same as this) is pictured right next to 144001.

  • Damn, just bought this a couple of days ago after looking at it for weeks. Why does this always happen?

    • +4

Thank you for your sacrifice! :P

  • Fark…. it happened again, no idea why I bought the buggy RC previously, now I'll have a second RC.. maybe I can race em

  • Thanks, picked one up.

  • I would google what breaks on these and order some parts too, like pins/arms/shocks etc etc. Could save an XMAS day being upset by a big crash 2 minutes after first driving the car lol

    • +1

Please share your findings. I'm new to this too…

      • I haven't owned this one, but I've owned multiple RC cars, and now matter how durable they are, in a RC vs steel/concrete competition, the RC will always come off second best lol. It's amazing how poles and gutters will jump out of nowhere

    • +1

They haven't been out long enough for people to break them yet. But they seem very durable.

      • They will always eventually break some how, it's just nice to have a few of the most common parts ready to go, especially if they're coming from China
