    • Wow, at least it's just the cable I guess but that's still kinda shyte. Mine just arrived this arvo, wonder if I'll have the same issue.

      • Yea let me know if your cable is any better. So far the screen looks nice. Compared to some UFO tests, working with actual work and playing warzone and all seems really nice so far…

Does anyone know if there's anything specific I can run to check something else?

        • I would love to know about the black smearing, as in previous posts:

Like on a black background with white text? ( https://preview.redd.it/6g0hnj9lymj61.gif?format=mp4&s=c9a1a… )

Or in a game ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SxJerJQdGg ) preferably a Space Sim like Elite where the stars on other monitors get occluded when you move the ship…

          • @MiniMyna: Happy to download a game i have in my library or something that is free and test it. Any recommendations?

            • @RenVilo:

Happy to download a game i have in my library or something that is free and test it. Any recommendations?

That'd be fantastic, would really appreciate it.

Off the top of my head, biggest fears for black smearing (where VA blacks would look amazing if they'd dealt with the issue) would be:

Quake, Quake 2 RTX, Elite Dangerous, any of the Dark Souls, Adr1ft, any space Sim (Eve online). Move the mouse quickly and see if it looks like the video above.

Also, white text on a black background as long hours of scrolling text is difficult with any smearing at all. I've heard the overdrive modes can reduce it, but then they get ghosting overshoot. Unfortunately am sensitive to even a tiny fraction of it. Samsung G7 / G9 models are the only VA panels that seem to eliminate it (can't see it at all on my mate's G9)>

              • @MiniMyna: Cool will start downloading something soon but sortibg the kids so will update later. But so far the smearing seems to be less on the dell vs my 49" and i thought the 49" was nice..

                • @RenVilo: That's really positive news, looking forward to your opinion.

          • @MiniMyna: Just found this before I made my purchase yesterday….as I am not a serious game player I cannot tell whether it's good or not, but just for your ref. https://youtu.be/YkWuy_eWy3w?t=603

            • @BlueSky84: That is really helpful. Unfortunately, their videos are often very general & don't really cover what the downsides are - e.g. black background, white text scrolling (I use dark mode a lot, and VA monitors give me a headache from the smearing) & Space sims, where the stars actually disappear when you move the camera.

This comment does have me a little worried: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkWuy_eWy3w&lc=UgwFdeGv1tITb…

              Appreciate your time!

              • @MiniMyna: Seems i might have been over confident in the Dell… results doesn't look to be good. This is hugely dependent on the screen settings. I'll make a video in the next few min in both eve and warzone just to compare a dark vs bright game.. and the settings would be with freesync on and off and on response time of fast, super fast and extreme. Anything else I should be changing?

              • +3

@MiniMyna: Ok so here are some results.. I'm no pro so :)

                https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1yeyvCiR6ISvzcQIlLYYn…

There are some nice screenshots of Warzone. The vivid colours are on the Dell, I like this. I've pushed up the saturation on the screen from 50 to 70. Then look at Warzone.mp4. I like this and can't see any issues. Then there's Eveonline extreme and browse Extreme.. Basically never use Extreme haha… Lastly, there's a Eve Final Test.mp4. You will see I took a quick clip of my Samsung and then the rest is the Dell and every time you see me returning to the pod and moving again it is me changing the settings on the screen:

                0s - Samsung test
                45s - Freesync On & Fast
                1:34s - Freesync On & Super Fast
                2:15s - Freesync On & Extreme Fast
                2:45s - Freesync Off & Fast
                3:30s - Freesync Off & Super Fast
                4:15s - Freesync Off & Extreme Fast

But basically, turning Freesync On with any response rate is bad. Turning it off and putting the response rate on Fast seems to be the best but my Samsung still seems to be better.

                • @RenVilo: @RenVilo this is extremely helpful.

It's actually surprising how the increased saturation improves the warmth in Warzone. Hard to see any pixel response issues in it as well, which is surprising!

RE the worst case scenario tests (browsing & space sims), am surprised how little there is during the browsing tests.

Not too surprised in Eve though. The Samsungs appear to have overcome some of the limitations of VA panels with tech that will hopefully filter down to manufacturers such as Dell etc., eventually. For the moment though, it appears your suspicions may have been correct to a degree.

The Extreme response time appears to just be a pixel overdrive creating coronas, or inverse ghosting in these tests. That's the unfortunate trade-off with VA panels. The happy medium isn't quite there on consumer-priced models yet, but you do get excellent black tones as a trade-off.

Although I am pleasantly surprised at how well the screen deals with it, will have to stick with IPS for the moment, at least until my eyes aren't as good at handling fast motion.. perhaps a psychosomatic response (knowing it's there) will have me looking for it, instead of enjoying the immersion away from the challenges of the real world.

Really appreciate the time you've taken to test this out, it means a lot.

                  • @MiniMyna: Yea I really like the screen and the 3 buttons that you can set to which ever command is awesome. Works perfectly for my needs but with eve i am a bit scared to keep this

                    • @RenVilo: That sounds awesome, way better than my LG 21:9 which has a 4-way toggle thing. Totally ruins changing input. If you play a lot of Eve, perhaps that's a valid fear, but many people appear to not be bothered by it. The inverse-ghosting vs black smearing is a frustrating choice to have to make, but it beats paying $2k for the Samsung G9.

Personally will keep an eye out for the LG 34GN850 (or LG 34GP83A, which is a cheaper refresh for the rest of the world). These have the dreaded "IPS Glow" and blacks are just grey, however with motion they are simply amazing. $1489 is practically criminal for them, but perhaps they are compelling sub-$1k. All the best

                      • +1

@MiniMyna: Ok, so I have done some misleading work at the top. The screen's profile was set to "MOBA/RTS". Changing this to Standard seems to resolve the bad black smearing. Check the same link above but the "Eve Standard Profile.mp4" file. Now that it's a bit bright in the room it is a little harder to see. The vid start off in HDR then I paused it as the game freaked out when turning HDR off. I then set it to MOBA/RTS profile and you will see the black smearing. I then turn this to standard and it is all fixed. The downside to this is I can't set the saturation which is what makes the colours so vivid :( I did notice there are 3 game modes you can configure but so far I haven't been able to replicate the nice colours in the pictures in that link.

I still think the Dell is more Crisp. Taskbar and text do feel easier to read so I might still be keeping this considering the games I play and with just the profile setting change it seems to resolve.. But it's still 50/50

                        • @RenVilo: Wow, this appears to make a significant difference. Whilst not eliminating it, it would appear to be much more bearable. It's strange that this profile doesn't allow you to set saturation. How do the overdrive / freesync settings affect it on this profile? Does changing contrast affect it? Seems like there is barely any star occlusion. Does it retain the excellent black levels of a VA panel in this mode, and does it work with high refresh rates?

                          • +1

@MiniMyna: Yes it does make a significant difference. After testing it a bit more I decided I'm going to keep it and wait for my second monitor.. But then I noticed something in the bottom right.. a dead pixel… Seriously… Speaking to their tech department now but think I might just cancel the other screen and get this one send back. Honestly expected better quality from such a large company. Seems like I have to stick to samsung

                            • @RenVilo: Oh man, what a bummer, sorry to hear. Had thought they'd got the QC under control with modern screens & that was a thing of the past. Is it hot, or completely dead? Was looking forward to more testing, nearly changed my mind about it (price is just too good if black smearing can be mostly eliminated). Samsung definitely have great engineers, but I've heard their QC is about the same and one is best getting their stuff from a retailer. Anecdotal, though.

                              • @MiniMyna: Yea I was kind of convinced that the monitor is nice enough. I even had it set up, routed cabled nicely etc. But with past experience and now again another bad experience, Dell just isn't for me. Think I might just look at a nice 34" Sammy and a 27" next to it as it will not be used much. Until then, I have to try and figure out the best way to use this 49" lol.

                                • @RenVilo: Oh well, perhaps saved a headache in the future. Thanks again for all the effort! Best way to use a 49" is in a really immersive game, just the way it was intended. My mate was playing Doom on his Odyssey G9. And Ms flight sim. And some racing sims, all of which looked incredible.

    • What is a UTO test? I got my monitor today and want to check for similar issues.

  • Any suggestions, think I need a different HDMI cable, I am currently using my work laptop to drive the monitor, the work laptop has a UHD610, so it's only outputting 1980/1024 or whatever it is.

Any suggestions? It's not the end of the world tbh, but just wondering if there is a solution beyond getting a new laptop?

    • +1

It could very well be a bandwidth limitation on the UHD610. Scroll up for a previous discussion where it looks like high refresh might be difficult on a 620.

Just a thought, do you have an eGPU? It might be able to overcome the limitation, although don't quote me on this.

      • Nah, dont have a eGPU, wouldnt be keen to buy one either.

Am gonna be building a new desktop soon, which will have a 6700XT paired up to this screen. Not the end of the world.

  • Are curved monitors any good for coding ?

I spend anything up to 4 hours at a time in front of a screen

    • I code.. better off with 2 monitors, rather then just 1, curved or not.

So after doing a lot of reading, several tests and deciding to keep the screen I found the dead pixel and just asked for a refund and cancellation on my other order. Sticking with Samsung for the moment and only change my layout once I can go to a shop and inspect screens. This was the last time I'll attempt to buy any Dell product.

    • +1

Ahh that's a shame, I didn't find any dud pixels on mine after a quick check but I'm yet to inspect it thoroughly. Nice testing btw!

fwiw, my DisplayPort cable was fine at the full refresh rate, and the image looks great using colour settings from the RTINGS review (albeit with brightness set higher as it's being used in a brightly lit office).

I haven't thoroughly tested gaming yet either, but I checked TestUFO as well as dragging some windows with white text/black background around to gauge the level of smearing. With the Super Fast overdrive setting smearing was present as expected, but it wasn't really that bad and it's far from the worst examples around. That said, all other overdrive settings were pretty useless, but that's also to be expected for screens without a native G-SYNC module providing variable overdrive (i.e. there's often only one overdrive setting worth using).

Also fired up some Rocket League which I play heaps of on my faster VA (32GK850G-B) and also a bunch on the S2721DGF this 34 is replacing. Rocket League is not really the best benchmark for smearing, but it can certainly show up (mainly on darker maps around boost pads and nameplates when panning or whizzing past them). In this regard it was not bad at all and did not feel like a downgrade from the other screens that I'm currently using. Input responsiveness likewise felt just as good. I'll have to give it a more thorough test some time with things like CS:GO, but so far I'm quite happy.

The one thing that really stood out to me was the black uniformity which is absolutely phenomenal on this panel. It left me wondering why more panels can't get this right. Nobody likes backlight bleed, but I just can't stand IPS glow so I'm totally stoked with the uniformity of this screen.

Regarding your earlier comment about sticking to Samsung and expecting better of larger companies, I completely agree that there's no excuse for piss poor QC, and it's particularly shameful when larger companies drop the ball in this regard. On that note though, while Samsung have certainly put out some great screens like the 49" that you're happy with (and I love my Samsung TV), their Odyssey screens imo are one of the worst offenders when it comes to taking responsibility for the quality of their for the products; e.g. wasting people's time with replacement after replacement while denying the scanline issues that have persisted from one generation to the next in addition to other shortcomings of that series is inexcusable at the asking price of those panels. I even bought one a while back thinking these issues had been overblown only to find that it exhibited all of the issues people had been reporting. TL;DR being that no brand deserves your loyalty and you've really gotta assess each model on a case-by-case basis.

Sorry for the rant and best of luck with whichever monitor you end up with!

      • +1

Thanks so much for chiming in. Never apologise for detailed posts! Really nice to hear experiences with these screens, it allows people to make an informed decision. Am still of two minds on this screen, Renvilo's negative experience with the QC doesn't help, however his extensive testing convinced me it might be an acceptable trade-off if the smearing is as frugal/non-existant in the last video posted.

I feel like black smearing doesn't get too much attention for this format, as competitive gamers must use TN, or perhaps IPS in some use cases. It's mentioned in most reviews, however very difficult to gauge how one might be affected by it. RenVilo found the "profiles" menu, which appears to allow a better reduction. Rocket league certainly has some quick camera motion, so this might be an area where even improvement counts?

pcmonitors (or was it rtings?) did mention the uniformity. Seems like a fantastic trade-off if one is watching movies etc. Have also heard Samsung isn't guilt-free (reddit has many examples).

Perhaps one day there will be a monitor tech that nails just about everything, including the price, like the glory days of CRTs (which we threw out for larger and slimmer form-factors). Feels like we're getting closer.

        • +2

I can say that it is a nice monitor. Doing some of the tests showed the response time is faster than my Samsung and it was really crisp. Even the icon on my taskbar was nicer to read. The biggest reason I just cancelled both orders was more around me having a bad experience with a Dell product, even knowing they are good and sure there can be some faults at any place. But if you eat at a place once and the food is bad you might go back.. You will not go back a third time :)

Don't set the preset and use it on standard ad manually adjust it to your liking, that seems to work best and this is the same with my Samsung (but presets on my Samsung is much better haha..) Overall build of the Dell is nice and If you 50/50 due to the black smearing, I would get it. The worst case is you just sell it as the price is an easy deal to get so no loss so no risk.

I just ordered a new display port to USB C cable to connect my laptop to my 49" to run full resolution at 120hz and I found software that can switch display inputs based on a cmd command which I have added to a macro key on my keyboard so switching will now be instant and not having to select multiple options which was the biggest reason I wanted to split screens.

          • +1

@RenVilo: Appreciate it all. I can understand completely, it's so frustrating when they don't care at all about their QC or customers. Believe it or not I've actually had a poor experience with Dell, having returned a laptop back in 2016 due to the 1366x768 bait-and-switch they did on it.

Unfortunately, having decided to take a punt, I've actually been unable to buy the monitor. They just take a $0 charge out of the account. Figured it was my bank, so I called them, but no, it's Dell. So, tried to pay with PayPal, and got "we are having a problem processing your order" with an alarming red box highlighting the fact. Called them, thoroughly frustrated, and two "consultants" with a kindergarten-level knowledge of English, simply couldn't understand why they couldn't take my money. I gave up on being transferred to a third team. So, guessing it's not meant to be!

Addendum, which software can switch display inputs based on a command? Or is it just for Samsung monitors?

            • +1

@MiniMyna: Looks like they finally put my order through. Will report back with some testing & how quickly it'll be returned when it arrives.

            • @MiniMyna: Any screen as it can be triggered through the cable:

              http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/control_my_monitor.html

Tested and working 100%. This switches some of the settings but will have to play around with it. On my Samsung I can split the 49" to be 2 screens. One working from HDMI1/Display port1 and the other from Display Port 2 etc. This software can't handle this accurately as it sees the screen as 1 screen so trying to change from say a 2 screen setup to 1 screen setup isn't possible. But I'm now using it as a Primary monitor for work and then just switching to my gaming PC etc. Quick and easy. Also had to get that 8k Display port to USB C as my current cable limits to a lower resolution making it only usable as a 34" screen. This combined with MS Powertoys to set screen sections should work perfectly… Hoping :)

              • @RenVilo: This is awesome! Real power user stuff. Thanks for finding it.

    • Bugger - just found a dead pixel on mine too :( Damn shame as I quite like the screen otherwise.

Unfortunately it's located right atop a white bar on a status page I have open for most of the day, so it's going to distract me to no end now that I can't unsee it. Definitely feeling a bit petty about it, but it's going to have to go back…

      • +1

Really sorry to hear that. IMO even one dead pixel is unacceptable these days. If you know it's there, it'll haunt you. Hopefully they'll give a prompt replacement or refund.

      • +2

So I contacted them via chat - Technical. Took about 15min as they wanted me to run some test etc. They asked if I want a replacement and I requested a refund. Process takes around 10 days

        • Interesting how seemingly discretionary their support can be - I did the same but asked for replacement with a new unit as I wasn't willing to accept refurb replacement of a DOA new one, and failing that I said I'd like a full refund.

The agent said unfortunately they can't offer replacement due to pixel policy (doesn't apply anyway as it's DOA and not a warranty claim) but would escalate the case for approval of replacement with a new unit and get back to me in 1-2 days.

No idea what will come of it, I think I'd prefer replacement as I do like the screen, but sure as hell if the replacement also has issues then it's gotta be refund and back to the drawing board…

          • @itscyanide: I just opened my second monitor and monitor a scratch on the panel. Just emailed Dell and called and they said they'll get back to me.

            • +1

@misguided_will: Oof, that's a bummer for sure. It's the worst kind of issue too as it really shouldn't escape QC and can easily become a "your word against theirs" situation.

I can only imagine the headaches if you had to send a scratched panel back for warranty down the road, so if it was like that when you opened it then definitely don't let em get away with it!

              • @itscyanide: Yes must have been packed scratched.

They've asked for pics of it and the box too so have just sent them over. Won't let them brush me off cuz it's pretty big.

Just unboxed and plugged in last night and didn't see the scratch then as I have black wallpaper. I opened up Excel, which is white, this morning for work and saw it. Grrrr…hope they resolve for me.

  • Does anyone know how long it takes for the Cashback code to be sent from Dell? My monitor was delivered today and looking at using the code to purchase the monitor arm. Thanks

    • When I asked they said anything up to 20 days…

      • Yeah that’s what they said too when I tried calling…

  • For reference, I only managed to get up to 100Hz with my setup (GTX 970). Over DP, HDR doesn't work (probably DP1.2 limitation), and can only get up to 120Hz RGB before reverting to YCbCr422 at 144Hz (which I can't stand.. all text has a yellowish fringe). Over HDMI, I did get HDR to work, but only with RGB dropping the refresh rate to 100Hz. Given any game I play will struggle to get up to 100fps anyway this is fine for me, but obviously not really what I expected buying a 144Hz monitor (expected DP to be capable enough).

Also that the HDR modes other than Desktop look like garbage for anything with text, so you might have to toggle between them as you go in and out of HDR enabled games. Dell Display Manager (DDM) is supposed to make that easy with it's "Auto" mode, but the UI is a pile of hot garbage and keeps trying to switch to GameHDR every time the Windows 11 start menu is opened.

  • I just order my monitor, I am located in melbourne does anyone know what the time frame for delivery?

  • Pretty happy with the quality of the Dell monitors. I previously bought one of their 32" curved screens and needed another for a different workstation. Didn't blink twice in purchasing the 34" UQHD monitor. It's great, the stand is really good with height adjustment and tilt. Monitor controls on the back with the stick are better than their 32" model, which was clunky to change the input source.

Would highly recommend the screens. I wouldn't say curved is a must, but it has slightly changed the viewing angles. I haven't previously used monitors larger than 27" so having a flat 32/34" may change my opinion. But all areas of the screen are great for viewing, nothing appears out of reach or at the wrong angle.

  • I’m looking to buy S3422DWG for $549, but can’t till tomorrow. Does this deal end today?? Thanks for your response

  • The 2-in-1 has gone up in price. Now $1374 after coupon.
