Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 $620.10 Delivered @ Gearbite

1770
E10

I am a genius. I successfully guessed what this coupon code was (based on previous codes) and discovered this deal.

As usual, note these are illegal in NSW because Australia/NSW is a nanny-state that is behind the world. Cities in other countries that give back much more to humanity than NSW, allow scooters.

You can get $2400 of fines for riding a scooter like this in NSW, even though they are openly sold at JB Hifi and Harvey Norman etc. and many people just ride them anyway.

Also the scooters are zero-emission and quiet, take cars off the road etc. but our government does have no interest in fighting climate change so I guess it makes sense that they prefer you to buy a large vehicle instead.

"Transport Minister Andrew Constance says he was “not in the mood” to have e-scooters on Sydney streets, even though his department ran a lengthy process recommending conditions for holding a trial."

Same as the longest lockdown city in the World too!!! illegal….can't even go outside on foot or car after 9pm, forget about electric scooter.

    • +37

can't even go outside on foot or car after 9pm

Can't even take our bin out to the curb after 9pm…

But OK to spit at health workers if you are in construction and don't want to be vaccinated…

      • +4

Of course! Lots of selfish people around which is why we're still in lockdown… :(

        • -2

Not just that, Andrews is over the top. Most locked downed city in the world, of course its partly his fault.

        • +4

I'm intrigued that our "god given human rights" are now deemed, as you say, "selfish"..

Says alot for our future & childrens' future..

          • +2

@Bunsen: You mean the same "god" that gave us this pandemic causing millions of deaths?

Seems like a nice fella, should ask if they can end our lockdown

            • -3

@String name: Still no Flu though.. Hmm..

Let me guess, that's because of the masks & lockdown being effective? Yet the virus still spreads, lol..

        • -2

Lots of selfish people around which is why we're still in lockdown

I thought lock-downs are because of COVID-19, not because of people.
          Strange …

Imagine the public punishment when lots of smokers around are singled out!! We are all going to suffffffffffferrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

        • +2

Yes a lot of idiots complaining about lockdowns but they are the root cause of them needing to go on for so long as well.

      • Is this the same Premier that doesn't have to wear a mask in public?

        • +3

It is the Premier who can't remember who hired the security guards for hotel quarantine.

    • +12

I have an e-bike that is speed-limited to 25km/h if I want to use cruise mode, yet I'm more than capable of hitting 40km/h on just a casual ride manually. It's a joke.

      • +1

Yeah, the American limit of 20mph/32kmh is a bit better. Not too hard to change it to the American setting on some models at least.

        • if it is a shimano system you'll lose warranty

        • +3

Not too hard to change it to the American setting on some models at least.

Riding on the wrong side of the road is a lot more dangerous though…

      • +1

and if you have to ride on the roads - due to a path just disappearing, for example - it doesn't do much for the rider's safety if they're limited to 25kph amongst motorists that are doing minimum 50kph

        • +1

The assist is limited to 25km/h not the bike so you can rider faster if your physically fit enough. The 25km/h limit is due to that being the average speed of an average rider. It still gives you a lot more acceleration 0-25km/h so is a better option urban riding with cars than no assist.

  • +34

Yeah we have it pretty good up here in QLD

Daylight savings is a godsend when you have 14.5-16 hours of daylight every day ~+1.5-2 hours more than you banana benders. I get it, you guys don't need it, but it sure works here!

      • +7

        +1 for "banana benders"

        • +4

I can see Covid really affects them. Most banana i got from supermarket nowadays were straight.

      • +12

+1 because it doesn't need to be broad daylight at 4.30 in the morning.
Moving the time is a smart thing.

        Not allowing scooters is not.

Upvoted overall for the comments in the OP.
And I regularly see people riding scooters around Ingleburn. I don't see the problem.

        • +1

Having sunrise at 4 expletive 45 in the morning is rediculous… My kids getting up and waking the whole household is driving us insane.

        • Sydney streets are way too car friendly and unfriendly to pedestrians, scooters and bikes.

Should be allowed though, it's not hard. But people will get injured and die and then the gov will get complaints.

      • +2

Spat out my water when I read banana bender… Lol… I'm now picturing the nation of banana benders.

        • At least it sounds better than "Croweaters" (for South Australians)
          or "Sandgropers" (for Western Australians)

I understand it's ok to ride these around a park's bicycle track?

      • -2

Daylight savings is very bad for quality of sleep and health - it should be scrapped everywhere.
But obviously won't because politits don't believe in science

        • +10

That's a common misconception. In fact the health implications are almost all positive.

Some people look at the very slight increase in heart attack rate and seek to apportion blame to the change in routine and sleeping cycles. However the increase is relative to the increase in exercise that occurs as a consequence of people having access to longer post-work sunshine hours. The silent killer here, and the one that places a $12 billion p.a. burden on our health care system, is obesity related disease. So despite an initial small increase in short-term health complications (inactive people suddenly becoming active) the mid to long-term health benefits are all beneficial.

        • What good does the sun coming up at 4am do?

          • @isaac-newtown: Dries the dew, lets the birds enjoy some 'alone time' from humans, starts a charge on your solar panels, etc.

      • +14

Fun fact: contrary to popular belief, banana are grown as a straight fruit in Qld. They are then taken from the farm to state run factories where they are bent into their iconic shape by our professional banana benders. QWEEEEEEANSLANDAAA

      • +1

Much better if have fixed time in whole AU & work only 6 hours (real productive) only during common daylight.
Unfortunately, the 8 hour public holiday lost its meaning as we now work 10+ on regular basis from home => Wrong Direction STOP!
The rest of the world in the Northern hemisphere cannot catchup with our swinging time :(

      • +1

How is it godsend, I always despised daylight saving because all it does is (profanity) up scheduling especially if you are talking or dealing with other people around the globe

        • +1

these days we have this amazing technology whereby outlook adjusts itself. crazy the stuff they can do now.

        And chicken salt in AU

Now that i think about it, eating Kfc in Kentucky must be crap!

        • +1

Southern style fried chicken is pretty much hot and spicy everywhere in the US.

** because Australia/NSW is a nanny-state that is behind the world.**

    • +12

Correction VIC is the true nanny state

      • +13

Nah NSW is the OG nanny state that brought in curfews before they were even a thing in Australia.

Vic is stuck in lockdown thanks to NSW (again). Most progressive State in Australia mate, so quite the opposite of a nanny state.

        • I've lived in VIC my whole life I'm pretty sure we coined the term nanny state 10-15 years ago!

    • +2

Scomo would like to forcefully shake your hand and thank you for your cooperation

  • +8

if this is legal in nsw i will definitely get one

    • +4

I know that is illegal NSW , but I saw a lot in Sydney area

      • +2

That's right. I've discussed with numerous people about this and it's clearly a grey area. I've spoken to people who ride these HUGE e-scooters. Cops and have pulled them over simply to ask about it out of interest. They wanted to know how much range it can get on one charge hahaha.

These laws need to be eased immediately.

  • +40

Not in the mood FFS. So sick of this government having individualistic libertarian principles on paper then stopping these basic amenity enhancements for enterprising peeps. It literally saves the government money when you don't drive.

    • +11

Now that Constance is gone hopefully we'll see some change…

    • +2

In Vic at least the trials are recognised as useful and look like they're going ahead - inner city councils only:
      https://www.melbourne.vic.gov.au/about-council/committees-me…

      • Oh that looks nice! Maybe it's time to get one in preparation of it getting legalised

    • +15

Don’t vote Liberal..then you would get more progressive policy. Conservatives and renewable anything don’t mix because it goes against all the interest of their donors (or in some cases, their families themselves cough Matt canavan cough)

      • +2

Victoria has the same laws and they're Labor…

    • This was my exact reaction. Now that Andrew Constance has left, articles such as this one from yesterday have appeared:
      https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/electric-scooter-…

I'm really hoping this goes ahead. A trial here in Olympic Park, NSW would be awesome!!

      • Any chance you can summarise the article for those without Daily Telegraph subscriptions?

I'm in Olympic Park as well so am particularly interested if there's a potential trial for us!

        • +4

          Oh for sure!!

The start summarises it quite well:

E-scooter enthusiasts are hoping the state’s new transport minister will finally allow the devices to operate legally in Sydney.

Business Western Sydney executive director David Borger is calling on new Transport Minister Rob Stokes to allow a trial of the scooters at Sydney Olympic Park.

His calls are echoed by Business Sydney executive director Paul Nicolaou, who said the Sydney CBD would also benefit.

Then there's a picture with this caption, "Zack D'Mello, 18, is joining a push for an e-scooter trial at Sydney Olympic Park.".

Then they mention Constance's reaction to this:

Mr Constance also cancelled a trial earlier this year.

“The former transport minister is moving on and we need to move on with electric scooters,” Mr Borger said.

“People are voting with their feet and using them, whether they’re allowed to or not.

“The benefits of the trial are that we can work out how to use transport effectively and reduce risk.

“And the best spot to do that is in a place with wide open spaces and endless footpaths like Sydney Olympic Park.”

They proceed to talk about how there has only been 24 fines since 2014 for riding scooters. This has apparently totalled to $1804 which seems unlikely in my opinion as one rider received $2.5K fines alone for riding their scooter at the Sydney CBD.

They then mention that the e-bike hire system was poorly implemented leaving bikes scattered everywhere but scooters could be more easily stored out of the way with hire companies collecting them every evening.

Then they mention a local Wentworth Point resident,

Wentworth Point’s Zach D’Mello, 18, said a trial at Sydney Olympic Park would prove popular.

“It would be a useful mode of transport compared to going via car or even using a bus to get around,” he said.

“It really seems like a major grey area here because I’ve talked to people who ride scooters and they’ve had conversations with police, and the police say that they’re completely fine with it and they actually see it as a good way of transportation.”

        • Overall, it's a pretty interesting article and I'm definitely looking forward to a trial here in Sydney Olympic Park!!

          • @Zackeroo: Legend! Thanks for that, hopefully we see a trial soon. That will definitely tip me over the edge into getting one.

        • +8

          @bolt

use THIS in future , has not failed to remove a paywall for me so far

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: Bookmarked that link :) Thanks! I just read how 12ft works, super interesting and very clever.

          • +2

@[Deactivated]: Woah!! It works perfectly, thanks :)

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: There's also this extension which works great (Chrome version has to be installed manually from here because it's not allowed on the chrome web store).

  • +2

    What about SA?

    • +2

Illegal I'm afraid unless you're on private property. Annoyingly enough, there's a trial going in the CBD that allows the rentable ones and only the rentable ones. It's also been going on for years. You would think they would have made a decision already. Even the police are now riding them.

So annoying that e-bikes were classified mostly as bikes and are fine, and e-scooters are classified as motor vehicles. Nobody quite knows what kick scooters are though (I spent ages trying to figure out the rules, nobody quite seems sure including the Department of Infrastructure and Transport people).

    • Nup.. Illegal in SA unless you use the paid service of the Hire operators in the CBD and I think one of the beachside areas ( henley ? ).
Quite ridiculous. Its in the too hard basket for the regulators in terms of liability/insurance.

As soon as they become legal to use Im getting one

  • +5

    God the Liberals are inept.

  • +2

    is this legal in WA?

    • +14

No but the cops turn a blind eye as long as you ride carefully. I commute to the cbd on one everyday and have gone past cops heaps

      • +1

Helmet would be a must riding past the cops yeah? Mask lol?

        • +4

no masks in Perth since early July lol

          • @tdw: I was Joling, hence the lol.

With police you bever know haha

            • +1

              @ozhunter68:

With police you bever know haha

so damn true…i had a friend pulled over by the cops last month because they thought he had a phone in his hand when it was really the remote for his stereo.
and a friend of that friend was pulled over by a young cop who mistakenly thought his Indian-branded jacket was OMCG colours. what do they teach them at the academy..

              • @tdw: Oops,….bever/never.

Well, police doe a 6 month training in the academy before stepping out ready to police/harras public ( haha ),

wheras hairdressers need to train for 4 years before qualifying and going out on their own "brave world to cut hair"

              • +1

@tdw: Wouldn't it still be illegal for him to be using a stereo remote while driving .. ?

                • @nigel deborah: what law would he be breaking? and would it be any different to using the controls on the in-dash system [if those still worked]?
ultimately, they didn't fine him but it was after quite a lengthy argument.

but i really don't like where we're headed if police can just pull you over because of a mistake they made, then insist they saw you hold a phone when it wasn't a phone. will we all have to install dashcams that record the interior to prove our innocence?

                  • @tdw: I don't see it being that different from using a phone, assuming he has to look at it in order to use it (which I assume he does - otherwise the cop wouldn't have seen him looking down at something).

Here in VIC the laws are very focussed on mobile phones for some reason, when it comes to technology distracting drivers. However, I think you could easily be fined against "A driver must not drive a vehicle unless the driver has proper control of the vehicle" if you were looking down at a remote while moving. I would have given him a ticket if I was a coppa.

No matter why you are doing it, looking down (i.e. no vision of the road, even peripheral) while moving definitely deserves a ticket.

                    • @nigel deborah: no, i've driven his car, and the remote's buttons are raised. i never used his stereo when i drove it, however if you're familiar enough with it, muscle memory means you don't need to look at it. like i said, not really different to touching your stereo, hvac controls etc.

according to him, the cops were behind him when they pulled him over from behind because "they saw something in his hand", not because he looked down.

i've heard of people being fined for drinking water while driving. ultimately, it's up to police discretion over whether you were in "proper control" of the vehicle and police, being human after all, are open to biases and seeing what they want to see.

      • It's not the cops you have to worry about it's hitting a Mercedes crossing a driveway and costing 10k for a new panel

        • Yeah that wouldn't be good. You have to ride slow on footpaths, thankfully Mercedes are few and far between in my neighbourhood

          • @No: Even a Hyundai would be a couple of grand. It's bullshit

That's what stops me getting a scooter. I can get insurance for my bicycle because it's legal, an illegal scooter you can't

            • @Tleyx: Yeah its not ideal. I generally don't ride on the footpath, got decent cycleways around my place and I ride on the road until I get there.

  • +13

came for the deal, stayed for the write-up. I already have one of these and they're great for the price! Only thing I could desire would be proper suspension. It boggles the mind that these are in a legal grey area when they're openly sold at JBHiFi like you mentioned.

    • +1

Service network would be helpful. An online video suggests you need about 10 tools to fix a punctured rear tyre. Yeah Nah.

      • Aren't they just thick rubber tyres like scooters of old? A puncture wouldn't damage them if so. Just pull it out and you're good to go

        • they aren't solid tyres

      • A friend of mine has a ninebot that needed a new tyre (tubeless). He broke off his screwdriver trying to do it, very fiddly. In the end the shop had to install a tube becoz the rim was damaged.
