When Is The Best Time to Change ISP on nbn HFC?

Can somebody explain NBN hopping for a novice? I have HFC, but presumably the process would be the same and would be useful for everybody?

Basically

if your NBN ends on say 10th of next month, then you start new NBN service on the previous working day (to avoid downtime) and then give notice to your current NBN provider to terminate once the current billing cycle ends?

Per this comment - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/11149147/redir

So, you can have a new NBN service active while the previous provider is still active? Similar to sim hopping where your service end date might a specific date, but nothing preventing you from porting out to another provider before that date

Correct me please if I've misunderstood the NBN hopping process

You just sign up with the new provider and your service switches over. It usually takes less than an hour.

Your current ISP may send you a text message asking you to confirm that you are porting to a new provider, just respond yes to that. After a short time your modem reboots and you're up and running with your new ISP straight away. You should notify your old ISP that you've moved so that they stop billing you, but even that's done automatically by some providers.

Have switched Telstra->Aussie->Launtel->Superloop->Aussie and never been down for more than an hour; quickest was about 5 minutes.

As it's so easy to churn, you can take advantage of whatever special offers are available. There's no benefit in being loyal and staying with one provider these days.

That only happens with ISPs that use the IPoE protocol.

For ISPs that use the PPPoE protocol you need to update your modem/router login credentials given to you by the ISP.

And you are not using VOIP.

This. Recently moved from Superloop to Tangerine and I needed to configure modem with login credentials so assuming they use PPPoE

        • Yep Tangerine = PPPoE. Superloop = IPoE.

How are you finding Tangerine compared to Superloop?

          • @Lion007: This is my 3rd week with Tangerine. Overall I think Superloop > Tangerine speedwise, I do get buffer lags on YT time to time. Also lost WIFI connection for a few minutes few nights ago which was annoying.

But for the price I'm willing to stick out with Tangerine for a little longer. I think they're OK if you're not a heavy user but YMMV.

@Craze: I keep getting regular dropouts (at-least once every few days) with Superloop. It's 6 months and time for my churn and was thinking about moving to Tangerine, but now i'm wondering whether there is a better option…

@zooter: I think Tangerine has a 14-day free trial so maybe have a go and cancel if not happy?

              • @zooter: Hi Zooter,

I am in the same situation like yours. First 6 months with Superloop very smooth and no issue at all. Now I keep get drop outs almost weekly on the weekend for about a few hours where I only get 1-5mb downloads speed.

Messaged Superloops a numbers of time about the drop outs and all they asking is isolation test and Superloops cannot find any issue with my connection. Very doggy.

            • @Craze: Lost internet connection or wifi connection? Wifi connection is between your router and devices.

              • @DarkOz: It was late at night and I was using my phone on my bed so unsure if it was actually connection or WIFI.

  • I've been with ABB (HFC) since i moved over to nbn… Currently on their 50/20 @ $79 plan but noticed Mate is offering 100/20 for the same price plus I'd take advantage of any sign up perks..referral..etc

Has anybody switched to Mate and found any decline in the quality of service?

    • I think readin all the comments YMMV…so better to switch and if you don't find it good, churn asap…although Mates generally has good reviews over on ProductReview site…
