How to get a cheaper new car price?

If there's one thing that Ozbargain has conditioned me to, it's getting a better than regular 'normal people' price.

So now that I'm plummeting through a mid life crisis I'd like to anaesthetise (Try spelling that without looking it up first) my life change by buying a new car.

Since I've never done that before I'd like some tips from those who know them.

I'm in Tasmania and I'm looking at getting a Kia Picanto GT (At this stage), and I've read all the reviews, watched all the YouTube video's and downloaded the user manual so I know how to activate the retractable cup holders and it looks like the car for me (Pending an upcoming test drive).

I can't play dealer against dealer because there's only one in the Hobart area. What options does that leave me with?

I'm not going to finance it, and I'm not trading in, I'm just going to use that weird cash stuff that I have under my bed. (It's starting to push my mattress up after saving so many $$$ over the years on OzBargain)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

    You must be new here

    Try this for starters

      You must be new here

I think OP is new to 2021, still living the dream in 2014…

      • OP must be on another planet or living under a rock.
Its hard enough getting a new car delivered within 6 months with 500 people ahead of you in the queue let alone even getting mud flaps included for free
What foolish dealer would be offering a discount with so many new car buyers screaming to get their car delivered quicker and paying full price or more.

COVID19 has severely disrupted the new car manufacturing and delivery chain in case you haven't heard.
That amongst many other disruptions around the world.
Ask anyone in construction about delays and rising costs as well
        They are everywhere

And OP expects a discount ???????????

Good luck even getting a hello from a salesman

    • Oh neat thanks !

I scanned through the first page of topics but forgot to use the search tool. In time I hope I can be forgiven.

Ps. I am pretty new to the Forum area of OzBargain, I usually just look for deals on the home page.

You have no options pay the asking price.

    • And hope for delivery within 6 months

    • Or choosing NOT to buy …

  • -6

Buying a new car won't really help much of that, however I'd suggest test driving a Tesla and buying one of those if you like it

    • +6

Let me guess… “because the $40,000 difference in price will pay for itself in 3 years…”

No one cross shops a Kia Picanto and a Tesla anything…

      • +2

My brain read stinger, now do I feel foolish

        • -2

Go back to your Tesla, it thinks for you.

How to get a cheaper new car price?

    Given your observational powers.

Make sure you pick one with blindspot checking and get a dashcam. As paint’s comment pointed out.

    • Thanks for the advice. Have a great day!

Has it really been 5 hours since someone asked this??

  • Try a car broker like yesterday's thread..

    Not serious

    • Bet me to it..

Terrible time to try and get a discount. Cars are in short supply, demand is high. Haggle, but now isnt a great time.

      When the chips are down………

    • Good advice.

My timing was more along the line of a year or so and more if needed.

If things change I'd rather be prepared to get the best for my money.

      • +1

Things unlikely to improve in a year. You’d be better to buy and enjoy now - assuming you can actually get one.

I’m sure with the massive delays on new cars and extremely high market of new car buyers a dealer will be more then happy to knock a few grand off.

You’ve got much higher odds of walking into the shop and finding a ps5 on Christmas eve then getting money off a new car in this sales climate…

    • Looked as a I drove past local Mitz dealer last night, and their lot was nearly empty - the cars were spread out on all sorts of angles to try and make the lot look 'full', they failed.

      • last month my local hyundai dealer could fit all their new car stocks inside the show room. and there was heaps of room left.

back lot was totally empty apart from the scarce amount of over price used cars

        • +1

Same… the local car yard here has a n off site holding yard for new cars that will hold anywhere up to about 400 cars awaiting sale… it’s completely empty.

  • Don't forget the OzB recommended comprehensive insurance before driving away.

Tell then 20% off or you'll walk out and not buy.

    • If not, get it through a broker to try again. Apparently discounts comes easily like home loans through a broker.

    • …and it better have roof racks for the kayak…..

Sorry, wrong car thread, that was meant for Toyoda deals.

      • -1

I hope that poor chap got a refund, that evil Toyota dealer.

    • The poor bloke will be walking for the rest of his life

      • -1

That's the punishment for asking this same question over and over again.

Have you tried the OzBargain deal sealer tactic?? “gEt ThEm tO GiVe yOu fReE fLooR mAtZ aNd A FuLL tAnK oF fUeL!!”

  • yep as everyone has said, current climate = 0 chance.. still remember buying new Kluger back in 2014.. nudge bar, side steps, tow bar, mats, mudflaps, cargo tray all chucked in for free.. now you'd be lucky to get floor mats for free..

    • Luxury! You could push for a print out of a picture of some floor mats, but don't expect colour.

  • How to get a cheaper new car price?

Wait…. In 2-3 years you can try those tricks for cheaper prices.

    • I'm not so sure about that.

      https://www.motor1.com/news/532591/mercedes-bmw-keep-prices-…

Sell less and make more profit; a lot of companies are going to start to do that.

      • Why wouldnt they .. people are lining up like ants to buy new cars…

      • Sales tactic…. By claiming not to 'drop' prices in the future, people who had been holding off buying, will buy now.

Trying to avoid a osborne effect, but for pricing.

      • It's an old trick, been around for years.

Many moons ago when I owned a small biz, I went on a series of sales/biz building seminars. Over and over again they told us - put your prices up. Sell quality products at top dollar to less people. The customers you lose are not the ones you want as they mostly only buy on price and won't be loyal to your business, and also just waste your time with their tyre kicking.

Didn't really work for me, as I had too many competitors in a narrow field. But I did see the logic of it, and many participants did implement it successfully.

Now Honda, and other companies are reducing their dealerships, and you can only buy the new car at a fixed price. No haggling, and no where else to go to play one dealer off against another.

Welcome to the new world of sales.

        • Honda? Sure, they first need to offer the right product. Only cars worthwhile are probably the Type R and CRV.

  • +1

your options are similar to the vaccine, the best one you can get right now. You can wait if you want.

  • Forget it.

  • Lol

  • The bear way to get a cheaper new car price is to buy one with a lower RRP. Want a cheaper Audi? Get a Toyota. Want a cheaper Toyota? Get a Kia. Want a cheaper Kia? Buy something used.

  • You don't have any options. They don't make money on the sale of the car itself. It is found in "financing" and unnecessary ad-ons.

However, money still speaks, so if I were you, I would dictate the SHOW.

Yes… SHOW… if you are an avid uTube watcher, try researching into the Techniques of a Car-salesman, The Psychological Tricks, etc. Then you will be armed with counter tactics that stop you from buying mud-flaps, protective paint coating, engine oil extra anti wear, and fluffy diamond from rear vision mirror.

Walk in, and dictate the SHOW, "What would it take me to drive out of your Lot, with that car, TODAY?" … "No No NO… I don't want mud-flaps, I said how much would it…. bla bla bla"

    uTube will help you.

    • 15% off? Works every time?

      • 60% of the time, it works every time…

  • Motor Scout - car buying service. Did the rounds of dealers and got the best price I could negotiate, then went to Motorscout to get some quotes on the same vehicle. They came up with a price that was $3818 cheaper and included 3 years of free servicing. Takes the hassle out of dealing with dealers and the bullshit games they play. Highly recommend going down the buying service route. Oh and Motorscout don't charge for the service, although they do get a commission from the dealer if you sign a deal.
