Reporting a Bug Causing Revenue Loss for Mobile Company

A general question:

I know a bug in one of mobile company billing which is resulting in revenue loss for them.

I am not sure how much would be the revenue loss, 'cos its not on every bill, only in case of special circumstances.

Do you think if I report this, can I expect some reward in return.

And how should I approach on this.

If they have a bug bounty program there maybe a money reward.

Of course - you might get an automatic acknowledgement email when you send an enquiry through their webform.

    What were you hoping for?

    • OP is still waiting for someone say post it as a deal.

OP, post it as a deal!!

If I dont see a post later about how you reported it and got zero reward, I'm going to be disappointed.

Share this 'bug' with us and the special circumstances and we'll let you know if it's a bug or a feature.

report / explain / disclose to ozb first :) we are one big family, no ?

  • Do you think if I report this, can I expect some reward in return.

Nope….. Unless they have some bug bounty/reward program on offer.

If this is a bug they have on the back end, aka not one you are doing to 'tickle' the system into giving you 'money/credit', then honestly who cares. Leave it be and enjoy the saving ;)

Not unless they have a bounty/reward stated on their website. The only thing you'll get is a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you've done the right thing…..

Imo if it's Telstra or Flip screw em, pm everyone here the bug so we can all exploit the hell out of it :P

I'm not sure if this is a general question tbh.

Just exploit the bug for as long as possible.

    My guess is Telstra

Not unless they have a bug bounty program, and even if they did, you have to demonstrate how it actually works, not just tell them the effects you can see as a layperson.

When I worked at a telco, the billing team knew of occasional circumstances where billing would incorrectly rate an item for less than it should be.
The cost of fixing the problem was substantially more than the loss from the glitch, so YOLO.
There were also similar glitches which were manually corrected each month as part of the invoice run (for a large business customer). Telco billing is truly a house of cards.

  • A "bug" is a feature of the code.

The code should only be changed if the feature is no longer beneficial to the users.

    OP's user profile pic checksout.

    Send your resume to them

Contact them via whatever contact webform they have. They won't give you anything.

  • Share it here so you would be rewarded with the title “God of Ozb”.

    Where is the option for:

OP reports it, gets raided by AFP for "hacking".

  • Sorry OP, I've already called them now and advised them of the bug.

  • I guess that's telstra, so I don't think it's worth to them lol because they probably has gazillion of those bugs. Off topic 10+ year ago when international call was exhorbitant I found a bug on Optus that gave you free call overseas when you ran out of credit, was fun for a couple of weeks until they blocked the burner sim, I actually ran out of people I could call overseas back then lol.

  • Looks like we'll never find out the secret bug. :(

Maybe OP had to sign a confidentiality clause with the Telco for a large payout?
