What's your budget? What features do you require? WIFI 5 or 6? What Gen M.2s? Overclocking? What RAM specs? Proposed cooling setup?

  • just buy the cheapest one as long as it has the io you required, any specs are just gimmick

No… No, they're really not "just gimmicks". Each has a function, some more than others depending what you want out of it.

for a 5600x, you can run it on a potato

  • Gen 3 m2,no wifi needed,no overclocking ,I got 48 ram available from old built,GTX 1650

I pretty much got it all from old built ,except CPU and mobo

  • Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 ATX AM4 Motherboard

    $220 from Mwave

  • I'd get the B550-A Pro for $169 delivered at Centrecom, which should come with a Steam gift card as well.

MSI B550 Tomahawk, its popular and good value.

  • What case do you have?

  • not sure , but current mobo is atx
    does it matter much?

Not for you. But an ATX mobo will not fit in smaller cases (eg ITX, MATX).

Make sure it's got the I/O that you need eg number of USB ports including type c, USB BIOS flashing,

  • ASRock B550 Steel Legend

    • how to update bios without using older ryzen cpu? it doesn't have bios flashback.

  • if your current mobo is atx and you are gonna reuse the case then I would recommend MSI B550-A Pro or MSI B550 tomahawk both are Atx. I went for the tomahawk because it was on sale ~ same price as A Pro. The advantage of A Pro is it has a lot of USB ports, more than a regular person needs. Tomahawk has better VRM and look great. MSI currently has a promo $US40 steam giftcard for A Pro, tomahawk, and some others mobo have a look https://au.msi.com/Promotion/anz-powered-by-msi-2021. Personally I went for MSI because of this promo and Tomahawk line has a good reputation.

If you want to save money and dont care about the look, get mAtx mobo, save a bit of money, most of them have 2 x m2 slot. In general, minus 1 PCIe slot and less usb ports, smaller size than Atx

one thing you need to keep an eye on is your ram bus. B450 supports up to 2666 unless OC. B500 support up to 4600 OC. When it comes to OC personally I would not cheap out on mobo as the saving is not so great.

I used this website to make sure all my part compatible https://pcpartpicker.com/

They both have wayy overkill VRMs, just the Tomahawk is more overkill. The main selling point of the Tomahawk is the better audio and LAN chipsets.

I'm running my 5600X with an A520. Don't care about overclocking. It works. Think there was a sale for them for around $50 previously, what a steal!

This is the last / possibly second last CPU series for Zen 3, so plan accordingly.
