The seller isn't even affirmative that these aren't AU variants.
The auction title is "Google Pixel 3 (5.5", 64GB/4GB, Global Variant, 1 Year Au Warranty)" so I would say it's definitely not AU. If you end up receiving an AU variant, then great!
Personally I prefer the global variant which is supposed to have the ability to use esim vs the Australian version which is locked down.
Strange, why do they lock it?
In any case, eSIM works on the AU variant Pixel 4, so at least they've fixed that.@eug: No idea why they lock it. Every pixel from 3A has esim enabled for Australia variant phones.
Any pixel 3 with IMEI starting with 35 can't use esim.
Unfortunately even with esim enabled pixel 3 there is no dual SIM capability like with the 3A.
No esim in mobiciti version of pixel 3 as the reply from them months ago. below is their reply: (esim answer is for my pixel 3 question)
Thanks for contacting us.
The phones do not support e-SIM - they have a single Nano SIM compatibility.
The Pixel 2XL should not support wireless charging.
@onebee: Oh damn, that sucks. I bought one from the Sydney mobiles deal with the intent of replacing my AU one to use esim.
Oh well, thanks for letting me know.
@onebee: Confirmed this is the case that esim is disabled, these are Verizon models and the bootloader can't be unlocked either (unless you're lucky).
That should be included in the deal's title.
It's definitely not an AU variant.
A neg for their same old practices.
They are selling it in "Brand New" condition.
Here is a comment from a previous buyer.
This is as fraudulent as it gets.. genuine charger gets replaced with some cheapo noname one, they advertise as brand new/sealed but the original seals been broken and accessories have been tampered with, and it's US variant not Australian.
This store should be banned for making misleading claims.
That should be included in the deal's title.
It's definitely not an AU variant.
A neg for their same old practices. Are you assuming they are the ones who posted it?
@eug: No? What does this have to got to do with that? What do you mean?
It was just a suggestion. Nothing more.
No? What does this have to got to do with that? What do you mean?
You negged them for "their same old practices" because it is not an AU variant.
If you click on the deal link, the eBay listing title clearly says "Global Variant".
So it's definitely a global variant. Why the neg then?
@eug: cuz I can sike XD……..
@eug: It’s a pretty standard convention around here that non-AU variant phones get [Grey Import] in title. MC have sold Australian Pixel 3’s here before (or did they?) and so avoiding any doubt by adding 2 words to the title seems like a simple, reasonable thing to do. Why are you so keen on starting an argument? If you had a bad day, I’m sorry.
I’ve also negged this deal because I’m still waiting on a refund for the last “new” grey import “AU stock” phone MC sent me. They’re lazy, incompetent weasels.
It’s a pretty standard convention around here that non-AU variant phones get [Grey Import] in title.
Sure. But that was not the reason for the neg. If you read hex7272's original post, he says that he's negging "due to the same usual practices", referring to the last deal where the deal and the listing said AU stock but the phones were the global variant.
With this deal however, the listing clearly states that it's global stock - so hex7272's reason is invalid. The neg should belong to the previous deal.
If he said he negged because OP didn't include "Global Variant" in the title, that would also be an invalid vote - see the section under "Incorrect or missing information in title or description".
Why are you so keen on starting an argument?
False negs should not be encouraged.
If you had a bad day, I’m sorry. I’ve also negged this deal because I’m still waiting on a refund for the last “new” grey import “AU stock” phone MC sent me. They’re lazy, incompetent weasels.
OK, so it looks like you had a bad day with the seller. However that belongs in the other deal. This listing is correct - the deal now states it's the global variant, and the listing title clearly states "Global Variant".
so hex7272's reason is invalid.
Shoddy business tactics seem worthy of a neg to me.
False negs should not be encouraged.
Not a false neg.
Issue with product
You say… "due to the same usual practices",
Yes because they continue to market the item as brand new when people are getting after market chargers in the supposedly brand new box. So the seller went all the way to reseal the whole box with used stained chargers.
I think my neg is justified so it stays.
Shoddy business tactics seem worthy of a neg to me.
Sure, if that was the reason then I think it would have been valid.
Not a false neg.
Issue with productThat was not the reason given. The actual reason given was invalid IMHO.
"Issue with retailer" would be fair. They said their supplier screwed them over which happens, but they certainly could have been more responsive about it in the deal post to protect their reputation.
@eug: lol who cares man.
i think most people get the message.
i don't think mods are gonna be that pedantic to classify it as an invalid neg vote.
They said their supplier screwed them over which happens
Did they ever tell you who the supplier was? You're only hearing one side of the story.
i think most people get the message.
The phrase you used was "same usual practices". You were stating that it is normal for Mobileciti to practice false advertising. The only evidence you provided was a link to the previous deal.
How often does Mobileciti practice false advertising?
i don't think mods are gonna be that pedantic to classify it as an invalid neg vote.
You changed your reason a few hours later. I agree with your new reason - they could have handled it better.
But your original reason could be seen as defamatory unless you have evidence that false advertising is a "usual" business practice for them. It is quite a serious accusation against a business on a public forum. Even leaving a single star review on Google with no text has ended up in court.Did they ever tell you who the supplier was? You're only hearing one side of the story.
Mobileciti has been around on OzB for 13 years and have had plenty of good deals, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. You seem to be assuming they regularly practice false advertising and are lying when it comes to the reason for the error. What do you base your distrust on?
@eug: Dunno
Even leaving a single star review on Google with no text has ended up in court(dailymail.co.uk).
Sheesh. That's mad lad.
So it's totally okay for a business to deceive customers and when customers figure out what's going on it's considered defamatory.
What are you trying to tell me?
I'm gonna hit a court case for negging with reason a deal on ozb
Lol that's just mad
Sheesh. That's mad lad.
That case was really dumb. Lawyers… sigh.
So it's totally okay for a business to deceive customers and when customers figure out what's going on it's considered defamatory.
No, but it's defamatory if you claim that a business regularly practices false advertising if they don't.
What are you trying to tell me?
There is enough false information on the internet, we shouldn't contribute to it especially if it can directly affect other people.
@eug: I can't edit the comment anymore.
Define regular. I don't find it to be misleading if it's a recurrent issue.
Business benefit from constructive criticism.
If Mobileciti back themselves up it might be all good.
This isn't misinformation when you misrepresent the condition of a item you buy.
Their supplier should seriously have just left it in its original US box untouched.
Define regular.
That's probably really subjective. I'd imagine a pub test would give answers like "every month" or "every few months, over a year or more".
I don't find it to be misleading if it's a recurrent issue.
Sure, but that was what I was wondering myself. It happened in the last deal and it was fixed so it didn't happen in this deal. How many other times has a similar problem happened?
Their supplier should seriously have just left it in its original US box untouched.
I imagine it has something to do with it not being legal to sell with a non-compliant charger. Does the one they swapped it with have an RCM mark on it?
@eug: Well it sure ain't legal to sell something brand new when you're breaking the seals to put in an aftermarket charger and then resealing to sell it as brand new.
@eug: This problem would be resolved if the forum allowed us to neg deals in retrospect, hex would go and neg that deal and leave this one alone. But in my speaking to mods they won't enable that, so hex has not choice but to come and neg here, and according to the mods that's exactly what he's supposed to do to warn people of the shady practices. Apparrently it's OK to neg due to seller being generally crap in the past. If you ask me. They should just let us neg the bad deals so we don't have to watch out for the next ones. If you are with me let the mods know how you feel
This problem would be resolved if the forum allowed us to neg deals in retrospect, hex would go and neg that deal and leave this one alone.
Oh, I wasn't aware you couldn't change your vote. It'd make sense as it would bring attention to issues with previous deals.
Apparrently it's OK to neg due to seller being generally crap in the past. If you ask me.
Yup, I've done that myself. The thing is, the original reason that hex7272 gave claimed that it is normal for Mobileciti to practice false advertising - i.e it is a "usual practice". Based on Mobileciti's reputation here on OzB over the past decade, that didn't seem like an accurate statement.
The original reason also pertained to the phone being a global variant which was clearly started in the listing title. The deal title was updated to include that. Negs aren't meant to be used for missing information in the deal listing.
Anyway the reason is now regarding how they handled the previous deal, so that's totally legit.
OK, so it looks like you had a bad day with the seller. However that belongs in the other deal.
Issue with retailer is an appropriate use of a negative vote.
This listing is correct - the deal now states it's the global variant, and the listing title clearly states "Global Variant".
The listing was not correct at the time. I reported the post and asked the mods to change the title, which they did.
With the beauty of hindsight I wish I hadn’t commented, as this seems to have descended into semantics. I’ll let you and hex joust it out.
Issue with retailer is an appropriate use of a negative vote.
Yes. Hindsight is 20/20. The original reason was not "Issue with retailer". If you only joined in halfway through you would have missed the moving goalposts.
@eug: The semantics continue…
Hindsight is 20/20.
You’re missing what I’m saying. To clarify further, the hindsight I was referring to was getting drawn in to having a petty argument on the internet.
The original reason was not "Issue with retailer".
Yes, it was. You inferred I negged the deal because I was having a bad day, even though I made it clear my thoughts on the retailer from the outset. I wasn’t ambiguous. I think you’re conflating what I said with what hex said.
If you only joined in halfway through
You mean 32 minutes after the first comment was posted?
you would have missed the moving goalposts.
I don’t think they’ve moved.
I’m genuinely left wondering why you’re so intent on defending MC. They have reps here, I’m sure they can look after themselves if they were to find something written here defamatory.
@eug: As stated above.
They are selling it in "Brand New" condition.

This store should be banned for making misleading claims.
Once you break the seals, tamper with the accessories. It isn't Brand New.
Any typical consumer would predicate that Brand New means all original accessories. This should be listed as a refurb/resealed instead. I trust however that the phone itself is new. Overflow stock from the US.
I get it. It's for the money. They won't sell as much if a more accurate condition was used.
Their business choice. Not mine. Their business copped some heat over this which was completely avoidable.
@[Deactivated]: Have a million upvotes from me. The problem isn’t what they’re doing, it’s the way they’re doing it. On eBay you can select “New (Other)” for condition and expand further but as you point out, that wouldn’t be good for sales. They could have also selected “Refurbished” which I think would be the accurate description.
For all intents and purposes these are leftover Verizon stock bought in bulk, shipped to Australia, opened and tampered with, then accessories are added that may or may not be compliant to Australian standards, and they’re then resold as “brand new”. The problem is they aren’t. It’s all dodgy as hell.
Edit: I reported this post and “Global Variant” has been added to the title.

I wonder why online retailers have a lot of Pixel 3 in stock but barely have Pixel 4a5g and Pixel 5. I had to buy a Pixel 4a5g secondhand.
Think the 4a series was a lot more popular. Pixel 3 to me looked like a midrange phone without the midrange price..
My theory is that the Pixel 3 was a flagship and a lot of retailers stocked up when it came out, however, its sales might have been mediocre.
Then came the Pixel 4. Retailers stocked up again but it didn't sell well either. So when the 4a, 4a5g, and 5 came by, most retailers decided not to stock up as much as before.
That could be true, I know the Pixel 3 and 4 weren't exactly the most compelling candidates for phone of the year.
Reason why the 4a/4a 5G worked so well is they basically gave almost the same experience in a much cheaper device.
Reason why the 4a/4a 5G worked so well is they basically gave almost the same experience in a much cheaper device.
Yes, and that's why I didn't expect the phone to be discontinued and out of stock everywhere just 8 months after release.
@aeoz: Even worse for the Pixel 5 imho. The Pixel 6 isn't even out yet and it's flagship is being discontinued.
The Pixel 5A is at least semi purchasable.
Agree it's quite an aggressive tactic to get people on to new phones by literally cutting the cord of all the others.
Anyone using this phone from when they got it back in 2018? Interested in the longevity of the phone. Haven't got a Pixel before, considering it tho.
I bought Pixel 2 XL near release and by 2-2.5 years it felt so old and had quite a lot of bugs/glitches/minor annoyances, wasn't really impressed with the longevity of the device.
Something to be said for the new Pixels though I've heard Google's actually starting taking its lineup seriously.
Pros:
- Great camera (for the time)
- Timely updateshad quite a lot of bugs/glitches/minor annoyances
lol. could not be anymore true.
I had 2 Google Pixel's and each time after a reset there would be a popup about an error with google keep.
That was pretty minor.
Put these aside and the software is well optimised.
Was meaning more actual nuisances (with 2XL). Some examples:
- blue tint screen
- camera crashing bug
- torch bug (can't turn on with camera open despite me force stopping the camera app)
- keyboard lag / ghost cursor
- google assistant popping up with no reason toPerhaps most annoying was the "incompatible accessories" pop up for it's own 3.5mm to USB C adaptor that would require taking out and flipping a few times before it worked.
Battery life is not a strong point. Mic is passable.
Other than than, it really is a very good phone. It does what a lot of current mid-range phones can't do. I'd buy this over any mid range phone right now. The camera is on par with the s21 in my opinion. Just forget about zoom.
Interested in the longevity of the phone.
Should be fine. I don't see anything impeding the longevity of this phone apart from it's internal construction and battery.
What's your screen on time like? 3 and a half hours? 4hrs? My current phone is only around the ~3hr mark, so I am looking for a new phone. Thanks in advance.
Good enough for me.
I can't give you reliable advice on my screen on time as it depends a lot on how I use it.
The battery life is okay nothing great.
If you battery life is a big thing for you, get a mid range phone. But remember you will be sacrificing camera, etc…
If you battery life is a big thing for you, get a mid range phone. But remember you will be sacrificing camera, etc…
Phones with great battery life are available in basically all price points.
Camera quality is at least okay in basically all price points. It's only if you want these together you'll have to likely spend more.
For $230 though this is a phone you can safely ditch or attempt to sell in a year or two.
Don't get the Pixel 3 as a main driver—the battery is terrible. I would recommend you to get the Pixel 4a 5g or 5 instead but the problem is that it's mostly OOS everywhere. You might need to pay a premium for brand new stock or just get it secondhand.
Now regarding your question, I had a Pixel 3 XL from 2018 and it's fantastic. Great battery, great camera, great performance. My one bricked because I was clumsy and dropped the phone without a case on. I got the screen repaired but it bricked a couple of months later (I think it wasn't sealed properly and got water damage? I noticed the cameras started to have dust and get foggy inside). If I didn't drop the phone I would probably still have the P3XL with me. Even if I did upgrade, I would still keep the P3XL to take photos for the unlimited storage saver on Google Photos.
Getting a kind of mixed reaction to my question; some say it's good, some say it's less than standard. Thanks for your input anyway.
If you were on a strict budget, $230 for Pixel 3 brand new is a good deal. It's still a great phone, just a terrible battery. Keep in mind though, October 2021 is the last month for Pixel 3 to get guaranteed Android and security updates.
If you had more to splash on, get the Pixel 4a 5g instead.
Bottom line:
Pixel 3 battery is not going to wow you.
I got the screen repaired but it bricked a couple of months later
Whoever repaired your phone didn't do a proper job.
Was it by a 3rd party?
A lot of 3rd party repair stores cheap out/don't bother with pre-made seals around the phone. They are pretty cheap.
Yes it was a local phone repair shop.
I got a Pixel 3 128GB through Optus in Feb 2019…I love this phone, the camera is awesome. This was my first Android device after years of iPhones. The monthly updates have been great
But…at less than 3 years old, it's now problematic charging (the USB-C port is very much hit and miss. Wireless charging is fine - but SLOW).
This has been my favourite phone, and if I could find a Pixel 5a 5G i'd jump on it…I'm seriously conflicted as to what I'll get next…
I had this phone and the battery is absolutely horrendous. I would not recommend to anyone.
The money in this phone is the fantastic camera, clean software, and its flagship performance.
I had the Pixel 3 XL and it was a great phone with the stuff you mentioned plus a great battery to boot.
From my secondhand experience, the Pixel 3 had shit battery and that ruined everything good the phone had to offer.
Good deal.
I Would have bought it, if it was pink.My Pixel 3 from 2018 suddenly "bricked" last month, and it seems that I am not alone:
https://www.engadget.com/pixel-3-edl-bricking-issue-163056633.html
Battery isn't great, but if you want a great camera and you're a light user or just want a cheap phone while you wait for something better to come along, it's not a bad option. At this price point you're not going to find a phone with a better camera. If you want a good camera and good battery, you're looking at something at least 3x more expensive.
With 3x you mean the 3XL or ….?
Not OP but they meant 3x the price, which is true considering the price of a 4a 5g or Pixel would be around $500-$1000 (new/second-hand).
You can get the 3XL refurbished around $250-$500 but the keep in mind though, October 2021 is the last month for Pixel 3 to get guaranteed Android and security updates.
Of course. I re-read and clear haha. Thanks for not being sarcastic. I bought a 18 month old secondhand 3 XL black 128gb in
good condition on ebay auction on the weekend for $209 delived. The previous owner said the battery is stil holding 90%-95%
capacity. Had a Nexus 4 ( still have it in top condition ) and really liked its clean O.S. but as live semi regional the 3G did not
cut it for long, needing the 4G B28 around here. Yeah, looks like official Android 11 and current security update is as far as it
will go, but was using a HTC 10 on Android 8 as my main phone up three months ago, so that won't bother me for a while.
Looking forwards to the nice P-Oled screen and stereo speakers lol.
AU variants sold for slightly higher prices
Negging due to the same usual practices
The market prices for Brand New/Resealed/Refurbished mobiles vary drastically. It gets cheaper as you move down.
The seller isn't even affirmative that these aren't AU variants. "may" is taken very lightly. You're selling the phones and for some reason you don't even know that it's an import or at least can't be sure of it?
Of course you can shift the blame to a dodgy supplier…..
Other than that - great phone, great price.
