Long time lurker, first time poster (go easy)

Saw the deal last week for $699 and thought I'd hold out for a better deal (shipping made it $715).

I believe this is eBay plus.

Good price, getting close to ATL and probably is if you exclude the klarna/afterpay type deals

  • +3

CPU oversupply due to GPU price hike. I suppose it doesnt help that these dont have iGPU's so you need a GPU to output any display.

  • +10

Tempting to rebuild but gonna wait - Intel 12th Gen is out in a few weeks and apparently smokes these so a price drop is very likely coming before end of the year.

    • Got a link to article/vid you read about it?

    • +6

The 12900K does significantly better than the 5950X in one single-core benchmark, but multi-core data is presently unavailable to any degree of confidence. I would carefully consider whether models below the 12900K match or beat their AMD counterparts, since it isn't unusual for a company to make sure their flagship does great but anything below that is mediocre. At any rate the pricing would not be this cheap IMHO.

      Edited for clarity.

      • You reckon any chance Black Friday will be cheaper?

        • +1

Million dollar question! Can't say for sure. I've seen during the past few cycles that Black Friday is usually disappointing for tech deals. Better prices come along around this time of the year - Jul to Sep, and then again between Jan/Feb to Apr.

It's always a toss-up, but unless Intel's October end announcement for Alder Lake shows some major performance and efficiency jump over AM4, I think this might be a very good price.

Well said - do have a suspicion that this gen of Ryzen will get a little price drop soon anyway even if performance is much the same.

        Also: https://www.pcgamer.com/au/amds-prototype-zen-cpu-delivers-1…
Zen 3d coming soon which is ~15% better at 1080p for same price allegedly. It fits as a competitor to Intel.

Even with all this - are you likely to get a Ryzen 5xxxx MUCH cheaper than the above deals? Probably not. Maybe 40-50 bucks.

        • Yeah, I'd say (100% unscientific guess) maybe low $600-ish for the 5900x some time in the next 6-9 months.

Agreed with Zen 3D, but even that isn't expected before this time next year.

  • good deal, claimed price protection on this successfully last time

Also $560.44 delivered for the 5800X from Scorptech eBay store

  • Would anyone price match this?

  • +1

nice price, not enough gains over my 5600x, would be a pure vanity purchase

    • if you're only gaming don't even bother, anything that uses lots of cores then maybe

  • What motherboard you guys can recommend to go with this? Not much gaming but more on Video editing/multimedia usage.

    • +1

A B550 motherboard is what you'll want, x570 is newer but has less options, ie no ECC RAM. Get yourself a Samsung 980 PCIe x4 m2 sata drive, use that as your working directory and keep your other video files on a HDD.

I got a Asus Prime B550M A WiFi AM4 mATX Motherboard inside a Fractal Design NODE 804 case. Not sure if you'd want to go mATX, but you can fit a full-sized graphics card in there and the ventilation is excellent. My CPU (Ryzen 5600) runs at about 33 degrees with the stock fan.

      • Would there be drawbacks with running this on an aorus b450i?

        • Don't think so, but the board won't work with Zen 3 out of the box, you would need an interim CPU to perform a BIOS update first.

      • @tomoliveri Thanks your detailed response. That’s good to know and will save me money in the process.

      • +3

your B550 and x570 is the wrong way around. x570 is the enthusiast level chipset while b550 (newer, less features) is more mainstream.

      • +2

Actually, other way around… X570 is older than B550
The X570 got released ~ 6 months earlier.

  • What are the chances of it getting cheaper in the next few months, since my I won't be getting a gpu til December?

    • Good - given that as others have pointed out new Intel chips are imminently being released.

  • wondering if I should upgrade to this from my 3900x

    • +1

This will get you a few more fps for gaming, but for multicore workloads its not much of an upgrade

    • I would wait for the 5900x 3D Cache and that's 15% ipc increase to the 5900x. Definitely worth the upgrade from 3900x to 5900x 3d cache.

      • +1

5600x here, anything 3D cache related coming to this tier? gaming only.

        • AMD will definitely do a 3d for 5600x. They have no choice because they have to compete with Intel's CPU launch later this year. Plus AMD like dollars.

  • +1

Pulled the trigger, amazing deal - any recommendations for ATX Motherboards? I don't need wifi.

    • MSI B550 Tomahawk $169.15 with the same code.

Try filtering OzBargain with search: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/am4+motherboard

If you can wait, there are always decent deals coming in. I got this for my 5900x and I'm very happy with the quality and support from Asrock.

I'd suggest looking at a B550/B550M board since they are much cheaper with good feature parity compared to the dearer X570 chipset. The main thing X570 has over it is the PCIe lanes are (for the most part) all gen 4 links. So unless you need it, get a B550 :)

      • Legend! Thanks Radiskull!
Are the Tomahawks higher or lower end than the Steel Legends?

        • +1

I'd pick Asrock over MSI but I've actually had MSI boards for the past 3 builds without issues. With these specific two mobos, they look very similar in terms of features (maybe a little more on the Asrock side). Go for whatever you can get a good price on; so about $120-$150. Ofc if you want, you can put in a bit more research if you really want to be 100% but it's hard to go wrong.

You're better off putting the extra money into your other components or nicer peripherals :)

  • +1

I think this is a good deal for anyone in the market to upgrade. I don't think there's been confirmed info on upcoming CPUs from either side but take into consideration, if their performance isn't marginally higher, their prices also won't be.
