Cheap iPhone Repairs beyond Warranty

Hi Guys,

So my IPhone 8 Plus appears to have died. I tried restoring it under recovery mode but it throws an error which upon googling points to a possible hardware issue.

I bought the IPhone 3.5 years ago for the retail price of $1500.

Is there any way of getting it repaired/replaced for free/min cost? I feel that a $1500 phone should last greater than 3 years.

Thanks!

    Your choices:-

    1) Identify hardware issue, buy parts off eBay, fix it yourself with a guide from iFixit.com

    2) Take it to a phone repair kiosk in a mall or street to diagnose and fix.

    3) Claim ACL at Apple to try and get free repair.

    4) Sell it as broken for parts on eBay.

    • I like option 3. Gently at first, then firmly but politely push the ACL with Apple support.

      • I like option 3

        That's odd…

  • 5) Buy a used iphone 8 on gumtree/ebay. It's going to be cheaper than any repair.

I feel that a $1500 phone should last greater than 3 years.

You've had it for 3.5 years - seems like a good run to me. Phones run in pretty harsh environments.

There's some quirks to phone pricing that means higher price will not lead to longer life. For example 64gb vs 256gb might cost extra $500, but the expected lifespan of both of these phone is the same. Similarly there's a $1500 difference between a basic iPhone and Pro Max (or whatever it's called). Yeah, the hardware is different, but the lifespan from this generation of phones will more or less be the same.

    • Prefer not buying used as don't know where it has been and the condition. Sourcing a used one is difficult due to too many scammers. Also buying new allows me to claim depreciation on it.

It funny none of my Android phones had this issue or broke so quickly.

When my iphone broke, I picked up my 4 year old Android phone, flashed Lineage OS/Android 11 and it's working fine.

      • It's not as difficult as you make it sound and you can still claim depreciation on a used phone, just like new phone.

If you can afford a new one, then yeah, go for it.

The reality is, any repair you make at this point isn't going to give you another X years of life. You replace the motherboard and might need a new screen in a few weeks/months.

    You got ripped off…

I got it for around $800 brand new from Virgin mobile soon after it was released…

Got one for $900, around the same time.

      • Could've been 900, it was around those numbers…

    • Might have been the 256gb one

  • I’m pretty sure ACL is 2-3 years on a phone. I doubt Apple will want to do anything with it.

  • If you live in Sydney metro, I can recommend iExperts. Still using the same iPhone 6 now that they have repaired for a reasonable price, right after the Apple Store tried to sell me a new phone. Worth taking it there for a second opinion based on my experience. https://iexperts.com.au/

My friend looks after the IT side of things at his school, and they send their MacBooks to these guys for repairs.

Not affiliated with iExperts in any way - just glad I listened to my friend, and thought I should give a plug to what appears to be a sound small business!

  • I would take it to apple for them to diagnose…..then you will know exactly what is wrong with it and how much it would cost to fix. Then you can gently prod them as to why it would just die like that.

  • Just an update. Phone had an hardware issue and apple cant fix it for free. Wanted to charge me $630 for a replacement.

What are my options? I was thinking of going back to Android as none of those phones have failed for me.

    • There will be a monthly Telstra deal on Thursday this week. Wait to see if Samsung S21 and/or iPhone 12/12 mini will be on sale like last two deals.

    • As we've said here and here, you can either:
A] just take the people at the Apple Genius Bar by their word; or
B] go seek some more opinions from some reputable repairers first, before making your decision.

Based on my experience, I sure am glad I didn't just choose A], especially as unlike most, I don't have money to burn! Phone is still working fine more than a year later.

P.S.: There is also the used option suggested here, but it seems you don't want to entertain this.

      • Thanks! I live in Perth.

It seems to be a logic board issue. I have contacted a couple of repairers and none seems willing to do it. One said they can - no guarantee but it is $150.

I was thinking of going for a used SE 2020 128gb for $300 as I wanted to get a smaller phone.

        • Ah that's tough, especially if multiple repairers have inspected your phone and the message about the logic board is quite consistent. Sorry to hear that.

In terms of the repair cost - mine was "no fix no fee", so I guess that made my decision easier at the time.

Sorry I am not up to date with used prices - hopefully others can assist further. Best wishes with the research and the hunt!

    • Any phone can fail, and android is not a brand just an operating system. Its the fanboys on here and elsewhere that try to make Apple devices sound infallible and everlasting to justify the price. I know from personal experience with Apple phones and ipad/laptops that they are as susceptible to issues as anything else.

You might be able to pick up a used one in good condition and get a new battery put in if you really want the same phone.
