  • Seems like a pretty weak discount if this was a genuine flood clearance sale.

And already expired anyway. From the web site:
      "Ends Sunday 11th March."

    • -1

And even worse still, the "packs" are half full of processed crap (mince, sausages). Neg.

      • +1

You seem to know a bit about these guys. How do you know they are "processed"? I make mince and sausages at home and I simply put cuts of meat into my grinder to produce mince. Are there other Angus beef delivery services that are cheaper?

"I simply put cuts of meat into my grinder to produce mince"
          Yes, P-R-O-C-E-S-S-E-D.

The details of the 12 kg package for example are:

          Beef Mince (approx 2 kg)
          Sausages (approx 4 kg)

so 6 kg of processed products right off the bat. Also Corned Silverside (approx 500 grams) - pickled meat which is too tough to eat otherwise.

So that leaves approx 5.5 kg. Take out the fairly standard middle-ground products:

          Beef Roast (approx 1 kg)
          Stripped Beef (approx 1 kg)

and you're left with 3.5kg of the kind of thing I imagine most would be looking for if paying for a "premium" steak package, ie:

          T-Bone Steaks
          Rump Steaks
          Rib Eye Steaks
          Eye Fillet Steak
          Sirloin Steak

Also the total weight for the 12kg package is only guaranteed to be between 10-12 kg, so you're potentially looking at:

1.5kg of the above "premium" steaks
          2kg of middle-range beef
          6kg of processed products

and if you're lucky, the remaining might-or-might-not 2kg will cover some of the premium steaks, more likely you'll get extra sausages and mince.

        • According to Wikipedia: Processed means treated for longer-term preservation and later consumption. A common additive to processed meats, both for preservation and because it prevents discoloring, is sodium nitrite.

How do you know it has been "processed"? Grinding or cutting isn't treating the meat for preservation. If it was, every cut of meat would have to be classed as processed meat.

I don't know if they add preservatives, but looking at their website, they seem to go to a lot of trouble to make sure the quality is as high as possible:

          • "Farm Fresh Beef Packs 1 day after butchering"
          • "fattened… on high quality pastures and crops in a free range environment"
          • "We do not use growth stimulants or antibiotics"
          • "our stock have been treated humanely from birth to slaughter"
          • "All of our farms are true Free-Range"
          • "We do not use artificial growth hormones, growth stimulants, or artificial or antibiotic feed additives."

Yeah, the first thing I'd do after going to all that trouble is adulterate it. /sarcasm

  • filled with water.

I dont think it looks too bad.. 12kg of meat for $136 delivered (if your within area) thats only just over 11 bucks a kg. and they seem like you can vary the options if you dont want sausages..

    Options:

    1. Swap half or all Sausages for mince.
    2. Swap half or all Mince for Sausages.
    3. Swap Corned Beef for Roast.
    4. Cryovac order if you intend to keep in the fridge, not recommended for freezing.

This has got me thinking how big is 12kg of meat?? haha

    • +1

As per above, only between approximately 1.5 and 3.5 kilos of that 12kg will be premium steak. $11/kg isn't so good when you consider you're paying $66 for mince and sausages.

I don't think this deal is neg worthy. Meat is highly variable in quality (even in the processed side of things, I have had TERRIBLE sausages before!). So even if you can find it cheaper, doesn't necessarily mean it is better.

On a side note, I am not sure if this deal is a positive either. Unless someone has had dealings with them before and can comment on the quality of the meat, I will remain neutral.

Alternatively, these guys would probably be doing it tough lately as a result of the floods, so it is always good to support locally grown produce.

  • It's the silent g that worry's me …

  • I only looked at the BBQ pack but I think I could pick up all of it for the same price or cheaper from my local IGA. I can get rump at $6/kg, i bet they're trying to sell the sausages for more than that in these packs.

    Not a bargain imo.

It states premium black angus - not your everyday IGA beef.

  • +2

I get pretty good locally farmed beef at about 7 or 8 bucks a kilo off the hoof at the local butchers. They also do premium black angus and it's a bit more than this even when buying in bulk, so yes, this is a pretty good deal. With meat, like most things you get what you pay for. If you want to shovel kilos of tasteless, chewy IGA beef down your throat, be my guest. This is clearly not the deal for you.

Assuming this is as good as I'd expect it to be and given the quality of the insipid, watery meat you'd usually end up with at Coles/IGA/Woolies this is a pretty good deal, especially if the profits end up in the hands of farmers rather than the supermarkets.
