WD Elements Desktop 2TB External Hard Drive - $111.75 from Target

430

Went into Target yesterday looking for an external hard drive - noticed that the display case stated "25% off Memory Storage", checked with the sales guy and he said it applied to hard drives. When the hard drive was scanned it came up at full price ($149) however as the sales tag didn't exclude hard drives they put the discount through manually!

Receipt attached for price matching purposes for all you bargain hunters out there.

  • Good score on the discount.

  • Target in The Glen doesnt have the discount :(

  • I was pretty impressed, didn't think they'd put it through!

  • get a mybook, not elements

    • Why?

      • I might be wrong about this but I think My Books are password protected. Also you can use USB 3.0 with the My Book.

        • i had done research a while ago… based on what i found, elements use a green hard drive, while my book used a better quality.

my book can last longer in life, compare to elements…
i had 2 elements, 1, had been more than 3 years, still in good condition, while the othe rone, i had it for like 1 week only…

          "better quality" ?

          how so?
there's nothing wrong with the green hard drives mate. they are designed to run quieter and cooler, and arent a 'performance' drive. nothing low quality about them…. i got 4 of them running in my home media server, and they are perfectly fine at streaming full hd 1080p no worries.

        • I have a bunch of elements drives and one "usb 3 my book drive" with a green drive inside. The green drive is the ONLY one that takes 1-2 full minutes to spin up and let me access it once it has gone to sleep. All the older ones (the elements) spin up within 3 seconds.

    Stupid sales person.

    • Dno, a bit harsh? Memory storage definitely could imply hard drives?
Although in theory one could extrapolate this for a range of products - for instance:
"Oh the Apple laptop isn't on the memory storage sign! - and it has memory storage!"
      etc.

    • The harddrives were in a locked cabinet along with memory cards and USB sticks with a sign on the front saying "25% off memory storage". Should've put that hard drives were excluded or put them in a different cabinet! :) I wouldn't have asked if they hadn't been in the same spot. The tag only mentioned bundles, already discounted things etc as exclusions.
Sales guy there is awesome anyway, only intelligent Target employee I've ever met.

  • i'm going to try this tomorrow at local target… lets see how I go :).

    • Nup… doesnt work at local store for me (ACT).

      • you go to canberra centre? I'm sure I saw the 25% memory sign today…

  • Was it a current model with USB 3.0 ? i wish the receipt was more specific with hard drive :( so then i could price match.

No it was USB 2.0, sorry I was hoping for a more specific receipt too!!

  • Worked at my local Target sales guy said "gee it didn't scan right, that sign is pretty deceptive - I'll mark it down for you" - cost $112…

  • Im going to try this at my local Target today

    • Got it, they were a bit confused due to the vague label but did it in the end
not a bad deal, would've been nice if they had other drives besides the elements 2TB

  • Hi guys is this USB only or USB with power adapter?

    • USB with power adapter

      • I'll pass

        • +3

You won't find a 3.5" external drive that is USB only. The interface does not support the required power draw.

  • Just got one from Castle Hill Target NSW.

The chick wasn't sure if it was part of the 25% off memory storage, but she checked with her manager, who approved it!

    Thanks to the OP.

  • Yes! Worked at Broadway today - 2 left :)

  • Didn't work at Target Bondi Junction, but the guy at the counter was pretty cluey tech-wise. I didn't push him to discount it anyway, technically it's not a memory product. There weren't even any signs up advertising the 25% discount anyway. I might try Broadway tomorrow if I can be bothered (though they're probably out of them now!)

  • Why are these so expensive now? I picked up an Elements 1.5TB for $64 I think from officeworks less than 12 months ago. Is this still the flow on effects from some flooding or something where these were being manufactured?

    • I was waiting to buy more backup space too, but the mathematics of supply and demand met my addiction to torrenting….

    • "Is this still the flow on effects from some flooding or something"

      yes

  • They had two at the Adelaide Rundle St store but wouldnt do the discount

  • That's strange, Target Castle Plaza did :)

  • Harvey Norman priced matched!!! Target would not do the deal

is $189, and a right royal rip-off at the moment
    so good deal op

I went in today (Belconnen-ACT), wasn't listed etc.

Young fella checked upstairs and all good… tried to work out 25% off… didn't get it.

Ended up getting it for $102.25 …a steal!

    Cheers

    • Wow, any chance I can get the name of the guy, might go there tomoz and possibly the receipt?

Took about 30 seconds to take it out of the case and its running nicely in my rig as a storage drive :)

    • If the drive does go belly up though, you wont be able to RMA it. Since you broke the seal on the case. The drive S/N's are linked to the enclosure. So they know the HDD came from an enclosure.

      • i disagree, last one i opened, there was no seal on the enclosure.
if you had to RMA, i doubt you'd have problems returning the drive in the enclosure (as purchased)

        • Was there any plastic tabs etc holding the lid on when you opened it? if so did any break?
