I rolled my own Google Home equivalent from a used 24” monitor and a Raspberry Pi for around $100.

  Mmm, I don't think they'd be comparable though. There's more to a Google/Nest Home Hub than just a screen.

I like the idea but I think it's too small to be hang on the well and become the control centre it wants to be.
I'd love something bigger that can be hung near the front door, with all the appointments, notes, weather etc on the screen
