Anyone Else Thoroughly Underwhelmed by The iPhone 13 and Apple Watch Series 7?

Watched the super cut apple keynote event of the iPhone 13 and Apple Watch series 7.

Other than the improved battery on the iPhone, didn’t seem like a huge deal to me at all.

I’m surprised the watch didn’t include some new sensor. I’m still rocking my XS Max and series 5 watch and have no plans to upgrade.

In saying that, I know a lot of people will blindly upgrade and Apple will continue to make billions from this. I guess my question is, will you upgrade?

For those with an iPhone 11 or 12 looking to upgrade, why?

  • I want to talk about iOS 15. But first - We only have 1 family member who is in Apple ecosystem. Stared with iPhone 5 (which is still working except the hardware buttons are pain and the power on/off button is dead but there is a workaround which is being used). Had moved to iPhone 7 (again working like new today also) and then Xs due to storage space limitation of iPhone 7 (Hello Genshin impact and no SD card support). I think now for non-foldable phone the hardware improvements are just that - improvements and incremental changes rather than radical innovation - a smaller notch here and there, an in-display camera etc. Apple or Samsung doesn't matter - applies to both Android and iPhones. Don't know whether we have already reached saturation or maybe saturation coming soon for non-foldable phones. So the differentiation factor could be the software updates (for example Pixel phones have historically been praised for taking extraoridinary pics with just single camera thanks to their software).
So that's where I have to hand it out to iOS - Being an Android fanboy, I am jealous that iOS 15 will work on phones like SE (first gen), 6s etc - so 6 year old phones sold in 2015 !! I don't think Android can ever match that many years of software updates. So if an iPhone user wants to keep their phone, then can really keep it for 7 years. Yes there are other reasons to go with an upgrade (storage limitation, camera improvements, size etc being primary) but if one wants, you still can have a workable 7 year old iPhone with good resale value.
I really wish Apple comes up with a foldable phone next year.

Android is the reason I switched over to iPhone. Was watching iOS mature to the point where I'm happy with it, then made the move.
My Samsung was bundled with its own inferior apps like Mail and 'Internet', and the Play Store kept refusing to self-update, despite factory resetting it.

  • The only thing that interests me is the lidar sensor and how much better it is than the iPhone 12. It would really be the only reason I'd switch from Android as I'm interested in 3d scanning, but use photogrammetry at the moment

  • What were people expecting?
Last year was the tick, this year is a tock. Next will be a tick again.

    Tick–tock model.

I would like to replace my second-hand bought iPhone 11 Pro Max for the 13 Pro not Max (size and battery is the only difference between this year's Pro and Pro Max), however am not a fan of the side edges digging into my palms. My 11 is more like a bar of soap, so I have no issues holding it.

Those with 12, is this a noticable inconvenience, or have you gotten used to it?

  • Have to step back onto my "trusty" iphone 7 plus because my s20 ultra's screen cracked easily. Can't afford to send it away for repair just yet.

Frankly, any phone, to me, is a camera and something that acts as a hotspot to my other devices. Right now I have an iPhone XS and will, probably, keep it for a few more years. This is the support system for my IPad Pro 11” and my Apple Watch. Both of these are why I stay with the Apple ecosystem.

My Apple phone purchases are when you get a major “leap” so I went IPhone 4, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone XS. As we are seeing, with a few posters, the iPhones are reliable workhorses. If you take care of them they last for years and the IOS upgrades are “current” for quite a few of the older models. IOS 15 will go all the way back to the iPhone 6s. The trade in value to refurb places is, also, pretty good.

If anything a lot of the IPhone owners are the opposite of “look shiny”. They keep their phones, for quite a few years, then do a comparison of new for old and consider if they need the next step.

I bought my XS when the next model came out and the pricing had dropped. I, suspect, a number of iPhone owners are looking at the iPhone 12 pricing.

Little to no root support is a no buy for me.

  • I have both iPhone 12 and Pixel 5 - 4a phones. Skipping the 13 - really interested in the Pixel 6 Pro

  • Currently on 12pro max, absolutely no reason to upgrade. With 14 leak being out my recommendation is to hold for the no notch.

And yes very underwhelmed. Cook is running out of ideas

  • Foldable phones are not the future, I mean if your filthy rich and want to sell oled panels out the door(then yes, more money for them for each screen folded)but I can't see folded phones the future, I see augmented reality the next step or the future hands free.

But bar phones are epic, the things you can do with them.

And a clear example would be Asus Rog 5 phone, with it's attachments-> did I mention it can play PS2 games with its over clocked insane processor.

The only thing apple have over andoid is lidar spacial photography, remove that and it's a locked phone.

Will be staying with my current phone, will never buy Apple products due to their draconian repair policies, sales policies. The fact that they serialise nearly every part now is just stupid. Try swapping 2 brand new iPhone 12 screens (genuine) n you'll see. I won't go on how you can never recover your data from water damaged iPhone, something I've done 100s times for people, but Apple says it's impossible..!

  • Always underwhelmed by Apple.

  • Was eager to get the wife a new Apple watch, but the 7 is no real upgrade on the 6.
Was expecting much more, so I may hold off another year.

Yup a bit underwhelmed, but I have a 12, so no need to upgrade. Hubby and I were planning to upgrade our apple watches but no real need, will wait till next year.

  • phone - seems about right. they do design changes every 3 years. so this being 2nd year since iphone 12, you can expect just hardware refresh.

watch - wasnt expecting anything new. hell they dont even have ekg enabled in australia from 2 years ago… least i was expecting was 2 day battery, but no 🤌

ipad mini - dont see the meaning of this… its smaller, yet the base price is between ipad and air. just not a fan of this series anymore.

looking forward to mac announcements later this year for M1 progression hopefully without touch bar crap and limitations on displays lifted.

I watched ijustine's phone review regarding the camera and I thought it was a really exciting phone. Then I watched Marquees Brownlee's review and I was like - ooh beyond the trickery of it.

Definitely a nice phone for 2021, but it seems that unless you're a hardcore photographer or videographer, much of the improvements don't matter to you.

  • Calling the Apple Watch 7 a redesign is the biggest Joke going around

  • I'm not exactly unwhelmed but I'm also not overwhelmed. I guess I'm just… whelmed 🤔

    *I'll see myself out.
