Ordered Coffee from a Coffee Roaster Online - Received Coffee and a Religious Booklet Asking if I Should I Burn in Hell?

Recently i ordered coffee from a roaster. This is probably my 5th-6th or so order, so i'm a somewhat regular customer.
But this package was different. This order included a free tea sample, but attached to it with an elastic band was a religious flyer.
The flyer (or booklet) pictured a black and white draw close up of a man on a cross, with red blood dripping down. Several pages about the big book, various quotes and a check box at the end asking if i wanted to be saved or to burn in hell.

I'll be honest and say i'm a little taken back. I've bought coffee from you - this isnt an opportunity for you to push your views onto me. Regardless of how i feel about the content.
Not cool.

Could it be a 'rogue' employee or maybe its a smallish company who have those views? I wont name them - or at least, not yet.
So now i'm in 2 minds whether to contact them about it or let it go. I mean whats the best/worst that can happen if i was to even bother?

That all said i cant say i'm losing sleep over it and yes I have moved on.
But i was curious - has anyone else had a similar experience with ordering stuff online?

Mate, I think you have raised an important question, do we support businesses based on ideological alignment and do we have a responsibility to research companies before buying. Not every business is as transparent as these guys, in a way its commendable, gives the consumer a full outlook and choice to support them or not.

        • +3

Personally I don't much care about the ideology of the companies owners/operators and I don't want to know. However if a company tries to push that ideology even through something like flyers then I will stop giving them my business. I do the same for political parties that cold call and charities that knock on my door also.

  • If 'hell' is a therapy session with Lucifer, I'm all for it.

  • +3

This belongs in deals. Free flyer.

  • +3

Worth remembering that weetbix is owned by the seventh day adventist church if that’s something that matters to you

    • +2

As long as they aren't pushing unsolicited religious materials, I will continue to buy their products. There's nothing wrong with companies that have religious underpinnings, as long as there are clear boundaries w.r.t extraneous reading material being snuck in.

  • Poor mannabeans going to get cancelled now

    • -1

Nah. This is a Christian site. I used to use a vpn service run by falun gong. It was pretty good and I didn't mind their religious stance as they were honest about it. Chick fil a in America is the same

      • This is a Christian site

Wasn’t aware. But it doesn’t push its ideology.

        • We get the occasional religious post but I can respect that

        • The very first Ozbargain post is a discount at Koorong, a Christian book store.
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/1

          • +2

@theguyrules: Do I have issue with that? Maybe and depends.

I don’t mind religious beliefs. You have a right to yours so long as it doesn’t impact my life via proselytising or form government legislation based on a certain religious teaching.

Then again, the question arises about supporting an organisation that supports a religion that has done so much harm to a community (examples include our recent royal commission, participating in the stolen generation and recent examples in Canada).

      • This is a Christian site.

How so? Is it because Scotty is a Christian?

        • Yes. And we get koorong deals often

          • @belongsinforums: He's also Asian, male, a father, etc. I don't think because he has posted koorong deals makes the site a Christian website.

            • @ozhunter: try posting anything that goes against christian values on this site and see what happens to your deal/post

  • +3

Happened to me when I bought some honey years ago (it was a small business in Darwin i think). Didn't mind it and definitely not worth cancelling them for. I don't see any harm other than some paper? That being said, the 'flyer' I received wasn't this confronting.

I think it's good way that they are transparent. Manna is literally biblical so good on them for being true to their beliefs.

Maybe they could do with a little less of a confrotning image of Jesus dying and simpler flyer (short card with a verse). I don't think the OP would have been that shocked if it was a post it note saying "God loves you… and coffee" or something.

    • +3

Im atheist and hate all religions equally, but If I got something with jesus loves you, i'd be aww thats sweet and not give it a second thought. makes me think some old churchie nanna is writing it… bless. On the other hand, shock and awe burning in hell pamphlets are just an insult to everyone's intelligence. It 's lazy writing that only worked when people didn't have the ability to do their own research on subjects.

  • +4

    That's hilarious!

"Enjoy your coffee!!…NOW BURN IN HELL!!"

There's plenty of other great coffee you can take with you to hell. I'd say goodbye.

    • Lol, roast in hell… the same place where we roast our beans!!!

      • That darker roast is good for decaf.

  • +4

I would just ignore it, it sounds similar to all the big corprates taking positions on political or social questions, nobody seems to go at them on principal just if they disagree with the issue being pushed

    • +2

Yeah I would personally find it amusing. At least they're saying what they really think, rather than big corps who are cynically calculating what is best for the bottom line.

Rather than trying to shame them into silence, take the chance to engage with the message and bully them for being wackos! The public conversation is valuable. It's nice to know how crazy our neighbours are and not having to tiptoe around it.

      • +1

Hey there was no goal of 'shaming' here. Other people did some research and figured it out pretty quickly.
If you read their replies to being challenged on the subject (both on OZB and Google reviews) you'll see they wont be changing their approach on the matter anytime soon. I feel i would be wasting my time.

        • +2

Sure, well, what do you want to happen.
You could try to reason with them and express your position. Sure, if they're that crazy already then changing their mind is unlikely, but honestly it doesn't look like anybody tried to have an honest convo with them yet.
Maybe you just find it amusing to interact with these people even if it's a waste of time, like watching monkeys at the zoo.
Is it inappropriate for a business to push their moral or political beliefs on customers? A bit subjective, they're breaking a social taboo. I think they should be free to do it but have to prepared for the customers to respond in their own way.

          • @ozfool: maybe I'll send them a link to this post so they can read everyones thoughts

  • You failed to answer the most important questions.

    Did you read it?

and MOST IMPORTANTLY, are you going to burn in hell?

  • +1

I felt their Comment about "the truth is more important to us than money…….."

    Riiiight so weird

    • Maybe they recently had a lotto win, and don't care about losing business now.

  • Just ask if the coffee tastes better in Hell being a larger roaster. Maybe a free Jab to go with it.

  • You just have to be in the right frame of mind…

    https://youtu.be/v6TeDM-wlZ4

  • Still better than waiting 3-4 weeks for your delivery from sensory lab 😆😆😆.
ill take a quick delivery with that flyer anyday 😆😆

  • Lodge an official complaint.

This is an attack upon you. If you rang them yelling "go to hell" the police would be kicking down your door.

I'm sick of these ads on TV stating Jebus is our only hope… note how its all scare tactics appealing to the child brain of society.

    COMPLAIN!

    • +1

If you rang them yelling "go to hell" the police would be kicking down your door.

Ahhhh, pretty sure they wouldn't. If you need hyperbole to try and make a point, it says a lot.

  • +2

Personally I would simply stop shopping anywhere that gave me such offensive flyers

  • -4

If you don't like it throw it in the bin, send them an email, return the order if you want.

I think you're making a big deal about this.

    • +6

No i didnt - re read my original post alone, not all the comments/discussions that have followed.
      Surprised yes. 'Big deal' no.

        • +10

Thanks for the feedback. Albeit negative towards the post and completey non constructive.

Why is it worthy of such a debate? Thats a question you should ask of everyone who has contributed. Whether it had 0 replies or 1,000,000 replies is out of my control.

Regardless - if you dont like it - move on sweetie.

        • +3

Why is it worthy of such a debate?

probably need to ask yourself that as you obviously deemed it worthy enough to read the thread and contribute to it.

      • +5

Oh I dunno…it would be a big deal to me. You shouldn't have to apologise for posting on this. I like their coffee, but I was astonished to read this post (as I think you were to receive the leaflet). Despite the reference to 'Manna' on the label, which I assumed was more of a marketing consideration, I had no idea there was god bothering on the menu. This sort of thing would completely blow my relationship with any retailer unless I really had to deal with them. Customers are coming for the beans, not religious instruction or debate. Wine vouchers are one thing…but this…

I don't think they even appreciate the irony of their accusations of "self-righteousness".

  • +2

At least in hell you'll get to hang out with all the fun people.

  • I am not religious and I dislike all religions especially the big ones. But if my order comes with a freebie I can take their propaganda. Thats fine by me. Just throw the pamphlet away, I don't see harm in that. Feels like this is being exaggerated

  • +12

Oh no. Poor form from Manna Beans.

Purchased a bit from them in the past. Won't be repeating any further business with them.

  • +5

Isn’t it amazing most of the comments are ‘get over it’

I still remember the ‘outrage’ over some Arnott’s products getting a halal certification. Wasn’t even promoting a religion.

    • +3

Yeah i was thinking the second to last sentance in my post would of dealt with that.
To clarify - i'm not outraged and yes i'm over it. It was just a chance to hear peoples thoughts and see if i was alone or not, turns out i'm not.
If people want to continue discussing - cool. If this is the last comment on the subject - cool.

      • +1

        Also, original robocop rocks!

    • +9

yea if it was a pamphlet pushing islamic beliefs rather than christian views i think most people would be up in arms about it

    • +3

The prefacing is also hilarious. "i'm not religious but…"

  • +5

I got the same flyer and free tea with my recent order (the tea was excellent by the way). I found it really odd that they would include a religious message with their order. It is far beyond the Merry Christmas style greeting card and I don't see how they thought it was a good idea to mix business with religion like that. It felt it was trying to convert me - I just wanted freshly roasted coffee beans.

The last deal thread mentions how it was a once-off but it seems to have persisted :(

I'll likely continue to buy the coffee as it really is fantastic but I've stopped recommending this business because I think it will reflect badly on me if this continues to happen. Don't want to take the risk. I've recommended another roaster in another state as recently as this week…

  • What’s that place in Katoomba? Yellow something. Run by that cult. But the food is great.

They don’t hit you up on their subtle comments until they’ve seen you a few times. Such a shame. Stopped going after that.

    • What’s that place in Katoomba? Yellow something.

      Yellow brick Road?

    • +1

I think I've been there, it gave off a weird vibe… I talked about it at work the week after, some who lives near there said, yeah that it was own by a religious group

Apparently, the entire region is very cultish

      • Though all the food is sooooo good. The chilli was amazing

      • Entire area west of Penrith is cultish. Full of crazy church people

        • 'crazy church people'?
I thought 'Freedom of religion and religious expression is welcome and celebrated in Australia'? from your comment down below.
          Hmmmmmmm

          • @6000SUX:

            'crazy church people'?

There's the normal Christians who adhere close to the teachings of Jesus and then there's the innovated evangelical pentacostals, baptist cults, and hillsong people.

I'm not Christian so they're all crazy in my book.

I thought 'Freedom of religion and religious expression is welcome and celebrated in Australia'?

Yes, it is. That's a fact about Australia not my own opinion. Look at our PM and the entire frontbench of the Federal Parliament.

            • @Orico: All good - I originally read it as your personal opinions, which conflicted. Hence the comment.

  • +1

Kinda expected, considering the name of the roaster… don't think too much about it?

I'm more conflicted with buying wheatbix and not wanting to fund Seventh Day Adventists so they can knock on my door for more money.

  • +7

Found the images on google review

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/203846/91205/screensho…

The letter? Ok just chuck it in the bin.

    The picture? That's really inconsiderate

    • +3

looks like some edgy shit a teenager would draw in their book in class lol

      • Jesus has been doing core.

    • Didn't know Jesus has gills. Marvel crossover?

    • +2

Hotmail email address, that’s the biggest red flag if you ask me

  • +8

That's one way to kill your business….. Might not be a big deal to most of you, but it says a lot about the business and the people running it trying to enforce their views/ideologies onto others. If I'm buying your coffee I dont want your extra propaganda bs, keep that to yourself.

    • How can they enforce their views with a pamphlet?

  • +9

Thanks for raising it. I've ordered from manna a few times but will no longer be doing so.

  • +5

I think it's unprofessional. I'm sure if they purchased something from a gay owned business and was given pro-homosexuality propaganda they would be pissed.

    • +1

Good point. Unless when challenged they said 'It was meant as an act of kindness.' That makes it ok. ;)

  • +2

If a company did this to me I would be quite bothered.

We may offer free gift wrapping, express post, gift cards, welcome notes or ribbons/bows on new release products as a personal touch.. definitely no bible material! Wow…

  • It seems to be always Christians promoting their religion: Mailing pamphlets, door to door knocking, standing on street corners yelling etc etc

You never see muslims, jews, bhuddists, sikh's etc doing any of the above…

    • +3

      jews

It's more common in America and Europe. Australia use to have a very strong neo-nazi sentiment so the jews use to be scared of preaching which is why they always have security around their synagogues and schools in Sydney.

      You never see muslims

Actually, muslims do preaching and calling to the way of their God just as much as the Christians. It's a highly emphasized collective duty for the muslims to call people to Islam. You'll find them in universities, Hyde Park in the city on Sunday, and moreso in the US, UK and Europe.
Go down to any suburb with a large muslim population in Sydney and Melbourne like Bankstown or Coburg. You'll see religious material being advertised a lot.

  • I'm not sure if it's the same as I don't remember the cover, but a few months ago I found a small book in my mailbox, from some apocalyptic cult, however no coffee, tea or any other freebies :(

I think their address was in the book (somewhere in Melbourne).

  • Come to the dark side, we have hell fire baked cookies…

  • did you just order heinously bad coffee or something? I mean, sure - your coffee probably burned in hell for you.

    It's literally roasted

    Achew
    'scuse me

  • +5

    Change to Inglewood coffee.

Great beans, low prices, no prothletising. It’s been one of my favourite finds of lockdown.

    • Yeah in the previous order actually - i agree, pretty good!

    • +2

Telstra's only cult belief is money. Vaccinations are good for business, and I'm assuming they were "spamming" you with whatever reward incentive they have for getting the jab.

I think suggesting that being pro-vax means being part of some cultish lunatic fringe is being just a little ironic…

    • +1

You're not going to b#tch about it? Isnt that exactly what you're doing?….

  • Before people start slagging the commentators against christianity. Have a look at the photo posted and look at the site "the cloud church"; I skimmed it and it comes off more of a grift more than converting people to christianity.
Lotta info of donating to support some rando to go convert more people.

Coupled with the pamphlet seems more like fearmongering vulnerable people to 'join' this very far right branch of "christianity" just to line their main leaders pockets.

  • +4

Anyone adding religious propaganda to their orders won't get any more orders from me.

    @mannabeans you've lost a customer here.

  • +2

St Ali coffee in melb is good too

  • -5

You bought from a company that calls itself 'manna…..'. Why are you surprised?

Australia has a very large Christian population so these advertisements have been common places for decades.

Freedom of religion and religious expression is welcome and celebrated in Australia. If you're so offended, you might want to try living under Chinese Communist rule.

Many of the largest companies in the world are owned by religious fanatics who donate billions to the church and state of Israel yet you people don't have a problem shopping with them. I think the key is to do it subtlety and hope people are too stupid to notice.

    • See comment about regarding the word 'Manna'. I held my hands up earlier and stated i personally didnt know this related to the bible. If its just me then fair enough.
I havent lived in Australia for decades.
I'm not 'so offended' this post is a discussion to see if other people had the same experience.
You have no clue who i shop with champ. Regardless this post is about my coffee order and the religious booklet. Re-read the original post.

      • I'm not 'so offended' this post is a discussion to see if other people had the same experience.

Common place for a long time. I'm talking thousand plus years.

You have no clue who i shop with champ

I looked through your comments history. I have a pretty good idea what you're into. You'd be surprised at who owns some of those companies you shop at.

        • Ha, you literally said, and i quote 'If you're so offended'.
So i'll repeat - I'm not 'so offended' this post is a discussion to see if other people had the same experience.

I'll also repeat this - Regardless this post is about my coffee order and the religious booklet

    • +4

If you're not religious, why would you assume Manna means anything? not everyone is up to snuff on religious vocab

      • -2

Because AUstralia is a majority Christian country and I was born here. I thought it was common place that people learnt about Christianity in school.

    • +1

Many of the largest companies in the world are owned by religious fanatics who donate billions to the church and state of Israel yet you people don't have a problem shopping with them.

Do those big organisations send you a flyer with your order telling you theres only 2 choice in life- to be 'saved' by them or to burn in hell?

      • -1

Do those big organisations send you a flyer with your order telling you theres only 2 choice in life- to be 'saved' by them or to burn in hell?

No, they support the countries that literally take a pile of explosives and fly and shoot it into people.

        • +1
