Is Anyone on The (Grandfathered) 30mbps Belong nbn Plan?

TLDR - Those previously on Belongs 30mbps NBN plan, what speed are you getting once your contract expired/plan grandfathered ?

So I signed up for the 1 year contract of Belongs 30mbps NBN plan last September as my partner got annoyed at having to be the one to call to cancel every 6 months (I don't like phone calls lol). All well and good, currently getting 40mbps.

However the 30mbps plan isnt available anymore and apparently I'm on the starter plan (25mbps).i hopped on live chat to ask if my speed was going to be the same as current for $60pm. Live chat said yes, and then also said 'your speed will be 25'. I asked a few times for clarification and he kept saying my speed wouldn't change YET it would be 25mbps so I just closed the chat in frustration.

Is anyone still on that plan after their contract expired, if you were on contract or after they took the plan away? $60 for my current speed is pretty much on par with what's out there but if it's for 25 then I'll start looking elsewhere.

Jees for $60/month you could be getting 50/20

    Why would you bother staying?

    • It was $55 for 30-40 speed which i was alright with as I'm on FTTN anyway and for the convenience of not changing. But I'll probably just suck it up. Bit odd that they didn't send out an email notifying that the plan is gone

      • for the convenience of not changing.

What exactly is the is 'convenience' you talk about?

It takes about 2 minutes to switch…

        • The having to call and speak to someone to cancel a service part. If there were online cancellations then I'd be all over it lol.

            • @jv: Not sure why that is even a point of discussion. Yes it makes me feel uncomfortable so I would rather stick with an ISP that provide(d) a competitive plan that suited my needs. Obviously if that's not available I would start switching every 6 months again, all I wanted to know was whether my current speed will be changing as getting an ongoing 40mbps plan for $60 is good.

Because this is a bargain website, so people will naturally comment that there are better deals out there…

@MeesusEff: No you don't have to call anyone - FTTN works like ADSL's old churn, you don't have to call to cancel anything it happens automatically when your new service provider gets your currently used line activated on their system instead of your existing service provider.

FTTP and fixed wireless, the services with multi-port NTDs have to cancel the old service.

The VDSL services (FTTN, FTTB, and FTTC) don't have to.

I assume HFC is like FTTN/C/B because it only has one port too.

            • @smashman42: Sorry for dragging you back to an old post but do I really not have to cancel my previous fttn service? I decided to go with Tangerine last night which connected today, my belong plan renews on the 1st, and they dont have a phone number to call. I logged on my account and it still says it's active (have already submitted a request but who knows when I'll hear back)

              • @MeesusEff: I went from Belong to Tangerine. No need to cancel.

              • @MeesusEff: When I went from Belong to Superloop I didn't need to do anything - if Tangerine is connected 28/12 then you in theory shouldn't get the next bill as Belong bill for the month in advance, but you won't get the couple of days pro-rate refunded of course.

I applied to Superloop to change over with a full week of gap (so only like a day or two more notice than you it seems) just in case cause I was worried about this - I still had my $10/m phone service on the same Belong a/c so I couldn't change the billing to an empty prepaid card or something, but no extra month billed or anything.

Pretty sure under Belong's crappy system it still said the service was active until the next invoice date (or close to it) when it finally said it was inactive and they had some "sign back up with us again" spiel instead.

If they do charge you an extra month you can TIO their arse if they refuse to refund it, but you have to try to get them to fix it first and have that fail. Telling their reps you'll go to the TIO if they don't fix the problem tends to solve the issue so long as you are in the right, and in this case you are

I'm on the old Belong 30mb/s plan. Still gets around 35/15 on HFC.

I read the CIS, the 30 speed is grandfathered so we won't get downgraded in speed but new customers can't get it.

Signed up in 2019, still got that $5 billing credit (effectively $55pm).

The problem with switching around is bothering with signing up etc. $55pm is pretty good for 30.

Losing out on DL speed doesn't bother me as much as ping, tbh.

I'm pretty happy with my current speed, just 2 of us and we just stream Netflix, download a bit but we don't need to watch it in like 10 minutes. I'll wait for another month after the contract ends to see the speed and hopefully they keep me on the same price :D unless I reminded them to remove it by live chatting them lol.

I also dislike churning because I have to sign up 2 days before or risk being charged a whole new month for like a day. One time it did take 2 days and another time the new ISP didn't work for a day or two. Husband got really pissed off as he WFH and told me to stop mucking around and just stick to one lol.

        • My contract expired in end of Sept but my October bill still had the $5 credit. Hopefully they'll just keep applying it for good 😁

  • i was getting around 33-38 Mbps Download, ~18 Mbps Upload before on the NBN 30 plan (My contract ended in the august, and i did not continue with them moved over to exetel). Now with exetel NBN 50 for $50/month (6 months) i get ~ 49-54 Mbps Download, and ~18 Mbps Upload. FTTC connection. Although definitely liked belong, had not much problems with them other than not being able to call them. ABSOLUTELY LOVED THEIR NO CREDIT CHECKS, with exetel gets hit with a credit check, at least when signup, not sure if will get hit again every month till i exit or not. I always end prepay my bills, not sure if that's a good idea or not for credit histories. (Like it may show as spending $0 or payed full $50 to them).

  • I am still on the Standard Plus - Month by month contract for $65/mth.

For some reason, I am still getting the $5 Contract credit.

    FTTN.

    • Did you sign up for the 50 or the 30 plan? I was pretty sure that the 30 was called standard plus, now it just says I'm standard.

      • i think i am paying for the extra speed which is Standard Plus?

        • I just got an email today that my $5 credit is ending next month, did you get that?

OP I feel your pain about phone calls! I was on that plan, but gave up on it recently because there are better offers around (though only for 6 months). You don't have to ring up and cancel, if you sign up with a new provider they should cancel your old plan with your previous ISP. It's always good to check of course, but I switched to [Tangerine}(https://www.tangerinetelecom.com.au/nbn/nbn-broadband) and they cancelled no phone calls required.

    • Im happy to stay if I get the same speed (even better if they still apply the $5 credit but we ll see), $60 for current speed ongoing is pretty good. I was pretty sure that for NBN you will need to call and cancel as some households can take both lines, but mobile providers you didnt. It will be great if the new ISPs call and cancel for me haha.

      • Oh, it could be related to if the DSL lines have been switched off in your suburb? Not sure. I was getting pretty average speeds (sub-25 I think) and got sick of them.

      • 99% of the time you do have to ring up and cancel on nbn fixed wireless and FTTP. Everything else should get automatically cancelled. It is best practice to check with the ISP.

  • I’m still on this plan at $55p/month but looking at switching. On HFC, peak I get around 30/18 but during the day it can be unpredictable. Sometimes 15/2 which is horrible WFH and doing video calls.
Rather pay same or less for better speeds.
For those on 50/20 plans and WFH do you have issues with video calls?

    • I got an email today that the $5 credit is ending next month, even though i first signed up in September, did you get an email? Wonder if it's worth live chatting or time to jump ship.

      • I’m still paying $55 a month and haven’t received an email saying otherwise.

        • We're getting in touch because the $5 monthly credit on your Belong internet service with account number x at x comes to an end on 31 January 2022.
          What's next?
From 1 February 2022, your ongoing monthly payments will increase by $5. Nothing else changes - you'll keep getting all the good stuff you get today.

Hopefully you'll be lucky and escape it. At least I got 4 extra months out of it I guess
