RGB on a power supply that is normally covered by the shroud and has the fan facing down? Bravo, we've reached a new level of madness.

    Good PSU though.

    • I remember playing need for speed in the 00's and it was cool to have LEDs under the skirts of your car.. you don't think it applies here? 😂

Anyway it's on sale and a better price than the non RGB version. You can always turn the LEDs off.

      • +5

I think having lights at the bottom-back would make the bottom-front look empty. If it was all under then we're talking.

      • I also don't understand the point of RGB power supplies given that 99% of cases that people use have PSU shrouds, and even those that don't still usually mount the PSU at the bottom with the fan facing down (so it cant be seen). But I have been told by some people that these RGB PSUs may still be of a benefit to people running "open air" cases (e.g. one of the weird thermaltake view series of cases that are really just a motherboard tray with a piece of perspex or glass on top). Can't imagine this is a huge portion of the market, though.

        • I do not believe 99% of all the cases have a PSU shroud. If you do not then you can mount it facing down or facing up, so you can see the RGB. Even some cases that have a PSU shroud sometimes have an opening to the side that may show some RGB from this power supply.

Saying that I do not condone RGB on a power supply… yet another unicorn vomit that you need to control with probably yet another shitty built RGB software that will certainly conflict with another shitty RGB software.

For people that will talk about "but it is compatible with Mystic Sync"… but that is not compatible with anything else but windows….

          • -1

@misu p: i said 99% of cases that people use. Name me some mainstream ATX or Micro ATX cases that don't have shrouds and aren't cheap pieces of tat that still use top mounting for PSUs (like the aerocool split)?

            • -2

@xyron: Best selling case on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Computers-Accessories-Co…

Your entire argument of 99% of people just fell apart right?

Is it a bad case? yes
Would it be stupid to put this PSU in that case? yes

BUT LOTS OF PEOPLE BOUGHT IT.

My point is that you have no idea what 99% of people buy…. not everybody watches tech jesus all day long.

              • @misu p: That case is still designed to have the PSU mounted downwards, even without a shroud. Also, just because the #1 selling case on Amazon US doesn't have a shroud doesn't defeat my argument - look at #2, #3, #4, #5, #7, #8, #9, #10, #11, #12, #14, #15, #16, #18, #19, #20, #22, #23, #24, #27, #29, #30, #32, and so on…

                • @xyron: It defeats your 99% argument or cases that people use, probably why you had to put there: mainstream ATX & MATX only, not cheap, not top mounting, not open, person with blue eyes, wear a fedora etc.

Also lots of cases can mount the PSU in either direction, a thing recommended if you put the case on the floor.

PS: the #2 and #3 case on the list has mesh at the top of the shroud just in case somebody wants the PSU facing up, but who is counting….

                  • @misu p: Who's counting? You are, apparently.

Mounting the PSU upside down in a case designed to have it the other way just to get a bit of rgb lighting is absurd (it also leads to less cable clearance as the wires come out of the far side of the PSU). The fact remains that basically every case in the top 30, 50, probably more, all have a shroud and therefore either block the rgb if you were dumb enough to mount your psu upside down in it, and even those that have mesh or cut outs in the top of the shroud are still designed to be used face down.

                    • @xyron: 'every case in the top 30, 50' and 'all have a shroud '

WTF number #1 does not have a shroud… 'every case'…. AAAAAAAAA

Here is the recommended way to install the PSU with the reason too: https://youtu.be/p1t8YJvOWzo?t=854
If the case would sit on the floor the recommended way to install the PSU is with the fan up so it does not get choked with dust.

Anyway you win… I give up… talking with ramdoms from the internet you can never win with arguments… my bad.

        • Cheapo cases certainly don't have a shroud and that would be almost 100% of cheapo cases that won't have a shroud,… anyway who cares RGB is just an added option,.. most important the quality of the powersupply itself

      • +1

I remember spending some time in the US in the 90s. 1993-1994 or so, every 16 year old kid had fluoro lights under their car. No laws against it there, and super dark tint that you couldn't see inside.

    • Fan facing down, what do you mean? Mine has it facing up? If it's facing down then it's just blowing air against the bottom of the PC case - how can that be effective?

      • +1

Some cases allow you to put the power supply face down so that the psu fan can suck air from the outside of the case rather than inside.

An example of this is Fractal Design Meshify C. It has a basement specifically for the power supply with a meshed intake on the bottom.

        • But what's the point when the PSU fan almost never runs in most modern PSUs? On my Corsair RMx I don't think the fan has run once since I bought it.

          • @Mondorock: Isolated thermal zone and so that your PSU can take in fresh air from the outside rather than re-using warm air from the inside of the case.

      • +1

The vast majority of modern cases with bottom mounted PSUs have holes and filters at the bottom for the PSU fan to breathe. that way, the PSU fan takes in clean air from underneath and spits it out the back. In fact, with cases that have shrouds, putting it in fan-side up would lead to the PSU being choked by the shroud…

        • +2

Guess I'm a bit out of touch - I last bought a PC case in 2010. No bottom hole/filter on mine.

      • fan on psu normally sucks air into it and blows out the opposite end of the rails out the back of pc case.
Why would you want to suck hot air from inside the case through the psu then out of it.
The fan is like those toys that you get that are really popular lately from places like sexy land suck not blow.

        • The air wouldn't be hot as it wouldn't've gone through the graphics card yet, but it would be stealing air from the card.

      • PSU's actually blow air through the back, and suck air through the fan area. So you can't really have it blowing air against the bottom of your case

Having it face down is best if you have a vent for it (most do), so it doesn't recycle the warm air inside your case

        • But, as I mentioned above, most PSU fans will not even be operating under most circumstances (unless it's a cheap PSU that has an always-on fan). So all this business about fan direction is moot.

          • @Mondorock:

So all this business about fan direction is moot.

Yet you're the one who wanted to point out that it is bad/ineffective to have it pointing down…

It certainly matters to some people… As with any computer components, keeping it cool will prolong its life.

But, as I mentioned above, most PSU fans will not even be operating under most circumstances (unless it's a cheap PSU that has an always-on fan).

Then the fan turns on when it thinks it needs it

    • Good PSU if not for the new 9-pin cables IMO unless being stuck with flat black cables is your thing

    • its probably just a LED fan

I had an early model of a super flower power supply with blue LED fan, annoying as hell as it was too bright at night when I was sleeping, I ended up opening it up to cut the led wires from the fan lol

      • -1

If you were sleeping how can you say the fan was too bright? You wouldn't have seen it.

        • ambient light affects your sleep

    • The fan faces up and the LED lighting is predominant on the cable connectors (once connected), let me get a picture of mine if you wish to see one in all it's RGB beauty using a cheap case.

      https://postimg.cc/nMGrf9pL

      • Just wondering what graphics card you have and are the LED fans original fans for your graphics card? Nice setup in a cheapo case 👍😁

Edit: Actually nice LED lighting from your Super Flower power supply, so there is LED lighting were the cables connect to to power supply?,..

Now I'm wondering if I could remove my power supply shroud from my cheapo case
        https://www.centrecom.com.au/karuza-v3-tempered-glass-case-w…

        • I have a 2080 Super with original fans. The Super Flower has LED lighting coming from the fan and through the cable connections. All the LED's can be controlled through the ASUS mobo.

The case should be easy to alter, I've found none in the last 10 years that didn't use screws or rivets. Once the biggest drama was heat which is why PSU's were often designated their own compartments for ventilation, not such a problem these days with AIO's. That said, you can remove the shroud and replace it with clear perspex which can be glued together with a clear plumbing glue and reinforced with non-ascetic silicon.

    • I'm not saying your point isn't valid, but this is RGB model is slightly better than the non-RGB version, as it complies with ATX 12V. v2.52 (ASM) vs ATX 12V. v2.32.

    • Yep madness, silly part too is the leds will generate heat which is something don't want in a power supply.

  • What tier is this?

    • +3

Super Flower generally considered top tier

  • +4

No fan spinning till 50% load is pretty good for slient build

  • +3

one of the best PSUs you can buy in this price range, great deal.

  • who names their brand Super Flower….

    • +2

people who know and actually manufacture PSU. not just rebrand them.

      • haha I have no opinion of the build quality, on the A list i'm sure its good. I'm just coming from a marketing angle.

        • -1

Do not talk shit about this absolutely wonderful super tire 1, the mother of all companies, company or people will get upset around here.

  • Thanks OP, grabbed one,

    • Read the comments below might change your mind

Can anyone confirm which version of the PSU is this it looks like SF-850F14RG-V2.0 which has the square connector?

The square connector is several years old and impossible to find aftermarket

The newer version has normal 8 pin pcie etc connectors which are a lot easier to obtain

    https://www.super-flower.com.tw/product-data.php?productID=9…

I had the same issue with a leadex platinum 1000w I ordered which was pictured as the old version but I ended up with the new version

    • +1

Actually it looks like V2.0 is newer so they've gone this "Super Connector" route 9-pin plug anywhere cables

No thanks can't get aftermarket braided cables to replace them

      • If all you're after is braided cables you can get extension braided cables. Not ideal as you do need a case that let's you hide all the cabling.

Have had this PSU since late last year and have used the extension cables for a cleaner look without any issues.

    • Where do you get the 8 pin cables from? I'm looking for a replacement for a few lost cables for a super flower PSU.

      • +1

Try cable mod e-series cables but check compatibility
        https://cablemod.com/compatibility/

They are available on amazon as well as direct

If you follow cablemod compatibility certain EVGA cables may work (eBay, aliexpress etc.) but check pin outs

        • Thank you, cablemod listed Leadex Platinum 2000 as compatible with EVGA E-Series G5 / G3 / G2 / P2 / T2 it would replace so hopefully should be the drop in replacement, but will trace a few cables I have to be sure. May be quite an expensive mistake to destroy the system that required such PSU.

Shame postage costs always kills deals from PCCG

    • $23 to post to WA, yep!

    • +1

Can't even pickup from them and I live 20 minutes away. PCCG are useless and lost my business the day they shut down CnC. I just drive 150m down the road to Scorptec.

Shame too because I had tens of thousands of dollars of purchases from them. Oh well, the guys at Scorptec are friendly.

  • Well since the questions about the connectors are coming in

Does anyone have this new 9-pin connector?

I prefer the standard cables especially if I decide to ditch the flat cables with braided or white coloured with aftermarket which would be next to impossible for a reasonable price with these custom 9-pin

    Are plug anywhere cables useful?

Solid PSU. I've been running this PSU 24/7 for a year to power my CCTV.

Best PSU's I've ever owned, quiet as a mouse, awesome RGB.

    650W is $109 + delivery, if that's enough for your needs….

  • Will a 850 watt power supply be plenty enough for a Nvidia 3080 upgrade?

Running x470 mother board with an AMD 3950x cpu, 280 CPU water cooling, 2x NVME drives, 2x mechanical hard drives, 32gb Ram, wifi module

    • +2

850 More than enough. The official recommendation by Nvidia is 750 watts, although people have gotten away with less than that.

SuperFlower is also a top enthusiast brand as well and they're known to make high tier psu's, the Leadex Gold Pro being one of the better ones in A tier.

      • I use 550w with my 3080. Undervolt with only a 5% performance drop. Runs super cool and quiet

        • Heard about undervolting wouldn't have a great website how to undervolt a graphics card? as I'd prefer quiet and cool over top performance,.. Cheers

    • Running similar set up to yours with a 3080ti and no issues

  • +1

Isn't this the same OEM that makes some of the high end PSU's from corsair?

I've got crazy coil whine on my corsair hx 850 platinum and it's starting to get to me, so much so that I might consider this
