Eyesight Not as Good as It Used to Be, Considering Magnification Options, Advice on Choices

Good day. I thought I'd mine the collective intelligence of the group and ask a completely "everything else" question.

So, am getting on in years and finding my eyesight to be less than stellar. I still love fine work like working with watches, and phones, and electronics, and models, etc but as can be imagined, poor eyesight makes it even more of a challenge than it should be.

So I figured I'd better get some thing that'll make it better and have come across two kinds of possibilities.

One is the an illuminated headset? with lenses. Like these.

The other is a lamp with magnification, like so.

If anyone has any experience on these types of products, would very much appreciate any feedback. If there are any opinions as pros and cons of either kind, I'm all ears. If anyone knows of any other options that I haven't considered, I'd be happy to learn about them as well.

    Step 1. Visit an optometrist

    • Lol. Yes, I do have regular visits to the optometrist and and the ophthalmologist. Thankfully, I only have presbyopia, which is a completely natural age related degradation of the eye's ability to accommodate to focus on near objects. The best fix for this sort of condition is reading glasses.

However, reading glasses aren't quite enough for the kind of work I was mentioning. :p

      • Besides from increasing the illumination of the room / lamp for thing you are doing, you may need to increase your glasses strength. Just go to your location pharmacist or $2 store and get some +4.00 or above reading glasses. (just go and try them on).

  • Hi, I saw something like this at Aldi. Magnified Task Lamp $49.99
    if you are browsing.

How about a digital microscope? plenty of people use them for electronics and watch repairs.

    • Thanks for that. Something I haven't considered. And from the image, it might actually be viable for my use case.

Bunnings have some try before you buy options.

Focal length on the headbands is one thing consider. 2x/3x magnification usually involves holding the object 5-10cm from the lens. Field of view and focal range limit suitability for some of the uses listed in the OP.

    • Didn't think that it would be something Bunnings carried. Thanks for the heads-up.

I also crossposted this query on r/modelmakers and someone also mentioned that focal point issue with the headbands. I'm glad I asked because I never even considered that. Thank you.

Might not help in the short term but they have been working on eye drops for Presbyopia for a while and this article claims they might be available towards the end of this year.

I particularly like the Novartis one.

    • Whoa. That's some interesting reading there. Seems like pretty innovative approaches. This is completely news to me. Thanks for sharing.

  • I found a need to use reding glsss about a year ago then rushed buying glasses. Found that if you focus your eye it can improve naturall then I ended up not using the glasses at all. Start from the distance that is just blurred then focus from there. Good lightning also recommended.
