USPS Not Accepting Parcels Bound for Australia

Just received this message:

"the USPS will temporarily stop accepting packages destined for Australia: First-Class Package International Service, Commercial ePacket, International Priority Airmail Packets, International Surface Air Lift Packets.

IMAG (International Mailers Advisory Group) noted that the USPS suspension of packets to Australia that begins on September 3rd will be in place until further notice. It said letters and flats would not be impacted, and it noted in a Tweet on Wednesday that Australia was a major destination for outbound international mail."

    Our Amazon US orders! :(

    • eBay international standard delivery not affected.. well that’s that

They ship into bulk airline containers which then get labeled and sorted once they arrive here. It doesn't go through USPS.

  • But why?
EDIT: due to limited airlift capacity.

    • The rona outbreak in vic/nsw

Not just Australia also, other countries included

Maybe because less flights here so reduced cargo capacity. Similar thing happened with parcels from JP.

      • And Japan Post still hasn’t restored parcel service, I think.
Hopefully, this is for a week to allow backlog to clear, not for 12 months!

        • I got negged for this comment, so I went to double check.
JP has still not restored airmail to Australia except for their small packets service, which is similar to our business sized letter airmail.
This has been the case since before Xmas last year.

    All due to COVID

"Due to the latest outbreak in Australia, it has forced mail centers across the country to close amidst new lockdowns across the country. For this reason, USPS has taken the decision to stop sending packages to the country for the time being."

Looks like we (AU) might need to restart start a few of our old local manufacturing… this could be a good thing! aaahhh… if only!

  • Thanks Gladys

  • Wow I’m pissed! A bunch of my fav stores ship via usps and not a total rip off unlike fedex which costs US$50+++

  • Seriously wtf! It’s the 21st century! Why the hell are humans still sorting and delivering mail?

It's been months since a few countries in South America stopped sending to Australia through the main national service.

The explanation is that the normal routes are not available, costs increased, and they can no longer have an ETA.

For instance, months ago Argentina, Brazil and Colombia were reportedly only offering the Premium (more expensive) service, which is transferred to DHL.

USPS is still shipping to Australia:

its only certain type of mail that is affected, essentially the "expensive super fast options"

*Australia’s service disruptions affect First-Class Package International Service® (FCPIS®), Commercial ePacket (CeP), International Priority Airmail® (IPA®) packets and International Surface Air Lift® (ISAL®) packets only.

My friend in US sent me a parcel two days ago, Auspost app got tracking and it is has been been loaded and is on its way to Australia
when my friend went to send my parcel he was told he could only send it certain ways (the 10-15 day option was only one he could choose) there usually is a 3-5 day option but its been suspended.

    Also
    VPost
    Shopmate
    My.US
all shipping as normal (they use the slower 10-15 day one anyways)

  • Merged from Anyone Have Any Updates or Insight to The USPS Suspended Service to AU Yet?

I think we all know that USPS has suspended services to AU for the time being (parcels). So not a duplicated thread.

However, does anyone have any insight or knowledge on an update to this?

Trying to get some stuff from eBay and the seller won't ship to AU while the suspension is active.

I do have a comsgateway account, so looked at using a freight forwarder, but at this stage, it's not worth it. Cost is greater than the price of the item. Also, have a company account with UPS, but they are too exe as well for a small item.

Also, the item is discontinued with the AU Disty, so they are no help for a local source either.

Have looked at the updates on the USPS website, but nothing further. Anyone have any insider info on this?!?

    • Also looks like eBay is up to something questionable…

      Subtotal (1 item) US $17.29
      Postage US $17.56
      Import charges US $7.55
      Order total US $42.40

$7.55 USD Import tax?!?! Since when did importing charges go up to 40% odd??? WTF?!?!?

The "import charges" are levied by eBay's Global Shipping Partner (Pitney Bowes) and covers Australian GST plus their own charges for processing the package

        • Thanks, was just looking further into that and picked it up also. Crazy fees there.

    • It is kind of duplicated as you can ask that here and follow the discussion there. My insight is that without a detailed plan to resume international flights the airlines are likely to stay away, abandon routes, and maybe even leave the country.

      • Was looking at this before posting. Doesn't seem to have any insight though, just 'until further notice'… damn it! :(

    • So why are being discriminated against by the USPS?

      • Think our international relations with the US might be screwed.. Thanks Scott!

        bringbackMT!

        lol….

  • Merged from USPS Suspending Packages to Oz - Does This Affect Amazon Expedited?

I was about to buy some ram that I can only find on Amazon US (256 USD), everything local is >$600 AUD, and then wondered (read: googled) "but what about covid shipping delays?", this turned up: https://www.eseller365.com/usps-suspends-package-services-to…

This is for packages, flat letters are not affected, wondering:
Would ram get through &/or this not affect Amazon Expedited?

    • MOD: Tis a distinct discussion, but I guess I'll ask here too: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/649502 , feel free to merge or delete.

    • I believe that Amazon USA do not use the USPS, rather they have external contracts with freight to Australia.
That aside, USPS has only stopped offering their cheaper airmail package services. They do still offer Priority Mail International to Australia BUT, a 1 kg package would cost approx. $A120 postage.

Actually… Cheaper packages are not suspended
Its the expensive ones that are suspended.

I have had a few packages sent via USPS during the suspension and the senders were told that only the cheaper options are available to Australia

“As of Friday, September 3, 2021, USPS will temporarily suspend some international services to Australia. This suspension is due to COVID-19 transportation cancellations and restrictions. Impacted services include the following:

        First-Class Package International Service (FCPIS)
        Commercial ePacket (CeP)
        International Priority Airmail (IPA) Packets
International Surface Air Lift (ISAL) Packets*

        • The services you mention are/were the cheaper options.
If you go to the USPS web site you will see the cheapest option for Australia is PMI, and a 1kg package will cost USD85.70.
          https://postcalc.usps.com/
Should you find a cheaper USPS option then please let me know as we import a lot of goods from USA for our business and the rates now make import costing prohibitive.

  • I was about to buy some ram that I can only find on Amazon US (256 USD), everything local is >$600 AUD, and then came across this USPS hijinks.

They're pausing packages, not flat letters - might ram get through &/or this not affect Amazon Expedited?

    • +1

A recent order of mine from Amazon US via Amazon AU was sent via DHL (standard shipping not expedited).

There was a pause before shipping (not sure why) but no delays once shipped, it actually arrived before the estimated delivery date.

      • Oh wow, there is hope!

Might be worth chatting with amazon beforehand then.

        Thanks

  • I'm having a fun experience with USPS now. Had a package posted 02/09 from New Jersey. So technically snuck in before services were suspended. Made it all the way to the International Distribution Centre 06/09. Been stuck in transit since 10/09.

Finally was able to get a reply from USPS on their Facebook page. They said it's been turned around to be returned to sender. With that, the seller won't refund me till they have received it.
