This deal is totally ridiculous. The definition of buying "outright" is to buy it in one initial payment without additional payments. So for Telstra asking you to buy outright with a plan is totally wrong. And for them to do a credit check for buying outright is also not right. What is the difference if you go to JB Hifi and buying phone outright. JB take your full payment and you take your item. End of story. No need for credit check or plan attached. You are defined as a customer of JB Hifi, regardless if it is your first time shopping there (new customer) or you have shopped there many times (existing customer). Exactly the same in this case. Those who buy from Telstra is defined automatically as a customer (you buy an item, Telstra sell them with or without plan). If Telstra want you to buy phone with plan then don't put the option to buy "outright" or Telstra could change the deal to: buy outright for existing Telstra customer only, new customer need to purchase the phone with plan. To be honest, you all could complaint to ACCC for this misleading deal

    • paying for the phone is only part of the deal, you can buy it outright or pay for it over 24 months.
the other part of the deal is in the text below that re:
"Buy outright or $26/mth for 24 mths.
Was $1,248. Save 50% off RRP when you add to an eligible Mobile plan."
the credit check is because youre signing up for a plan, im sure jb does something similar.
those that have been able to buy without a plan have been existing customers who probably have already had the credit check done for an old or existing account.

  • Well that was a waste of time. Stay up and wait for it to click over and the web site goes into maintenance mode.
Then try first thing in the morning and its on back order without an ETA.

    • It was on backorder for some (me) at 1am anyways so you didn't miss anything.

  • the reason they do a credit check when your clearly buying it outright is so they can boost their stats saying your a post paid customer instead of just making you a once off customer who is buying a phone

  • The s21 normally has dual sim but with Telstra you won't get the dual sim version is that right?

    • +2

telstra one is esim + physical sim

  • So I already have a Testra ID from a couple of years ago, but no active service. Tried to get this after logging in, but it's asking for an ID check again!

  • +1

Tip for anyone having verification issue - try the primary account holder's details.

My account has my dad as the primary user, didnt get through when I put my ID details in.

  • Finally got it to work! You can get away with a boost mobile number! Just make an ID but it's buggy-ish

    • I am trying to create telstra ID since yesterday and keep getting error says "something went wrong".

      • try different browser? try phone app?

  • Anyone have any suggestions for screen protector and case?
I think I'm going to hold onto this device until the S22 is released.

    • +2

      that's not long at all…

  • Min cost: $624
Outright purchases are only available with eligible plans.

    Is this legal?

    • I ordered without a plan.

      • ok thanks :)

I copied that text from the website which is clearly wrong then!

        • But to reply to your original post, yes, yes it is legal.

          • +1

@CodeXD: I was thinking something along the lines of displaying minimum pricing, assuming the wording is correct "outright purchases only available with eligible plans" then the minimum cost isnt the outright price of the phone itself but also the plan. however, pikaloo has also confirmed this isnt the case.

            https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/prices-surcharges-receipts…

    • To me it is not.

Buying outright: You pay for the full cost of the handset (phone) upfront. This means you own the phone as soon as you’ve handed the cash over and gotten your receipt. You then have the freedom to choose and change your telco provider and mobile plan as you please. How would you define buying on a plan then?

  • +1

    "we need more ID"… Why..

  • Anyone else an existing Telstra customer (though for internet not mobile) logged in and getting "Only the account owner can make this purchase. To continue with the order, please create your own account"?

  • +1

    Got the text from telstra
“we've dispatched your Telstra order. To receive your parcel you'll need to show the same ID used when placing your order.”

To track your order, visit https://www.ordertracker.telstra.com.au/orderdetails

Anybody else got the same message ?

    • Yeah I got this. Ordered 128gb version at about 4am

  • Store is down until 930.

    We're updating our shop
We'll be back online at 9:30 AEST.

    That is simply hopeless.

  • I tried to create a Telstra ID but I can't as I do not have any service with them. Buying it outright is a joke.

  • +11

Add to cart > Payment > Payment details are incorrect > Try to update details > Payment system is down > You've now been flagged for fraud.

    Cool

  • And here I'm thinking buying from Samsung's website was piece of work.

  • +3

Luke, you might want to reply to a few of these messages, including me. Please.

    • He's gone on holiday

      • or hiding. Bet he wishes he didn't attach his real name to this post.

        • +1

Yea he got everyone so excited over this deal, then conveniently disappears on "Telstra Day"

  • Anyone had any luck price matching?

  • Apparently mine will be delivered on Saturday. Highly doubt it. Auspost are suspending all package pickups from Saturday till Tuesday in lockdown states

    • They don't deliver through Auspost - it's couriers.

  • Says, I can't buy it without an eligible plan, I want to buy it outright without a plan.

    • I bought one without a plan. Just go straight to cart and checkout

      • I keep getting this error

        Something went wrong
We're unable to process your order at this time.

        Take me back to Telstra.com.au

  • bought s21 256gb last night around 2am aest, status is still back ordered (along with others).

then saw some mates here managed to have a shipping date of sept 4 but bought just this morning.

maybe stock based on location? I’m in sydney btw.

EDIT: for those who have shipping dates, can you post where you located? Thanks.

    • Ordered 4am. Expected arrival of saturday 4th sept. Located metro melbourne. 128gb tho, would assume 256gb was more popular and more likely to be backordered

    • 4 Sep, Melb Metro

    • UPDATE:

Just received a message that it is now dispatched and will be delivered by Sept 4.
So maybe it's just a glitch on their status last night.

  • +28

S21 on the rewards store 256GB: $648 + 8500pts, 128GB $600 + 8500pts for those having issues buying the other way or want to get rid of points, also not required to add a plan

    also 12 mini 128GB $744 + 8000pts, s21 ultra $128gb $1272 + 7500pts, s20 fe $600 + 1000pts

    • +4

by far the most useful post, even more so than the post from OP.

    • +2

Thanks a lot, ordered another one. Was given 50k points recently for new service. S21 256gb and 128gb seems to have same price with same points lol.

  • Hi,

Does anyone know if you add a plan to purchase a phone outright will you be able to cancel the plan after one months?

Is there a penalty if you do?

    thanks in advance.

    • +1

It is a month to month plan.

Make sure you buy the mobile outright.

I put one of the mobile purchases on a new service number so that I can cancel it straight away.

      Still cheap

    • buy a $2 telstra sim. sign up. login to Telstra account and buy outright

  • Thanks op! Got the s21 256gb

  • Is this available to business customers?

  • Trying to order and get "site down for scheduled maintenance, will be back at 10am"

    Sure.

    • It was back up at 10.

  • Getting errors (hard stop/scheduled maintenance) trying to add to cart.

    • No, you didn't get a few.

    • +1

while you are at it, grab a few Xbox X and PS5 too, set up a shop and name it "Scapler's Marketplace".

  • I don't really like samsung and was holding out for a Pixel 4a 5G deal, but this deal seems too good to pass up on. My main concern is battery and UI. I don't really care about amazing screen or fast performance. How does the S21 hold up in those two departments?

    • Samsung's current generation UI is quite nice with a good amount of customization and minimal bloatware. Battery optimization is good too.
Only place they might lag a Pixel is the camera software.

  • Gotta give us another crack here @lukehopewell

  • Getting a scheduled maintenance block when trying to check out.

"We'll be back online at 10:00 am AEST."

    Let's see.

    • Violet? Seems to be broken for that specific colour.

      • Trying to go for the standard phantom, both 128/256 kicking me back.

  • You will need Telstra account to get it, right?

    • Yes yes yes

  • Hey, first time poster. I have one of these held in a physical store for me. Going to pick it up at midday. Just wondering if I can add a $2 sim or something to my old Telstra ID to avoid having to add this $55/mth deal I don't want (I know I can cancel it) as I still have a month to go on my current Boost deal. The store person said I'd need to port over in store today to this new telstra deal… Can anyone shed some light?

    • Looks like it's available outright online as long as you already have an account, so he might be trying to pull one on you. If you're looking to pay off over 12/24 months though you'll probably need a plan.

      • Stores will be hit or miss. But yes they're definitely trying to push for plans.

  • All single sim, yes?

    • +1

All S21 models are dual SIM i.e. 1 Physical SIM + 1 eSIM, regardless you buy from Samsung, Retail Shops or Telcos, you get the same dual SIM model with 1 physical and 1 eSIM.

  • +4

    What an absolute clusterf***.

I ordered an s21 within minutes of them becoming available on the Telstra website. I was told back-order. Weird, but ok.

But then a friend orders exact same phone/model/colour more than half an hour after me, doesn't need to back-order, already has a shipping ETA. Mine is still saying back-order.

Telstra clearly stuffed up the sale deployment. They put them on sale without stock then only released stock shortly thereafter. As a result those who got in first (after Telstra eventually sent the sale live an hour after it was scheduled) got put to the back of the queue. WTF?

Telstra support chat care deeply about this issue, of course. Unable to give me an ETA of when item will be back in stock or whether it will be cancelled.

    • Seems so, people who bought first in a worser position.

    • +2

Just be glad you managed to buy one. Many here cant even do that. Dont know what your neg is for when you're already on board the gravy train.

      • +1

The neg was for a complete clusterf*** of a sale deployment. I'm also far from guaranteed to be "on the gravy train". They cancelled plenty of orders last Telstra Day for lack of stock.

        • To close this off, I got my dispatch notification. While I'm still not thrilled about the sale deployment and will certainly think twice about purchasing through Telstra again, I've revoked my neg.

          • +1

@whatboutbob: On reflection… Are you a little embarrassed at the way you carried on?

            • @jackary: Ha. Not even a little. A woeful performance by the Telstra tech team. I'm in the industry so it pains me to see bumbling incompetence.

  • Just ordered a S21 128GB in Violet

  • +2

Now I'm getting errors when going through the ID check process. What a shitshow.

  • Ordered an S21 256gb but it's on backorder.

  • So these are definitely not locked to Telstra?

  • Managed to get an order through after signing into my unused long ago account if that helps anyone. S21 Ultra on back order.

  • It just worked, ordered S21 128GB on backorder.

  • i am regretting that i thought it would be cheaper later this year ( "Samsung Galaxy S21 128GB $449, S21+ $649, Ultra $949 (after $400 Trade-in and Stackable $200 & $50 Discounts) @ Samsung Store" - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/622905 - occurred twice in Apr and May)

  • Fyi
I noticed telstra page it now included outright with eligible plan. But some people been getting it outright with no plan.

  • +6

Site is back up but shows "Something went wrong" again after ID step….with or without adding a plan. Sigh…

    • +4

Yeah stalling after ID step for me too

  • -5

Managed to snag 7 to sell on ebay thanks op! Solid 1k+ profit easy

    • If that is true;
while you are at it, grab a few Xbox X and PS5 too, set up a shop and name it "Scapler's Marketplace".

      • I believe you mean Scumbag's Scummy Marketplace.

  • -1

Those who owns S21, does Samsung still have many unremovable proprietary craps like Bixby etc? Or can we make it as clean as Pixel?

    • +1

Not exactly sure but no bilxby button by default so you don't have to open it

    • -2

Or can we make it as clean as Pixel?

With unremovable proprietary crap like Youtube, Duo, Google Assistant, etc?

      • You can hide them or put into a folder.

  • +1

Quick question if anyone can help, been on the $59 BYO plan (Pixel 2XL) for a few years, the phones paid off and I just kept going month to month with the phone plan until something new came along.

I'm thinking of going with the S21 deal and new updated data/call plan, would my current 5GB Multi-Product Bonus and monthly $10 credit roll over to the new plan or would that cease as it was part of the old Pixel XL BYO plan

    Any advice appreciated, cheers

    • I want the answer to this question too. I wrangled an absolute deal last time with the Pixel 2XL and I now have a $29/month plan with15gbs LOL. Really hoping they'll let me use it for my S21.

    • I would think not.
I'm on an older plan with unlimited data that I'm paying month to month still as I need that data and the largest plan data is just not enough.
Anyway in exploring my options for this plan - from what I've read, they have been systematically shifting people towards their "upfront" direct debit plans and taking away any previously negotiated bonuses if you are no longer on a contract. So even if you don't recontract - at some point in the future, you may still lose it.

  • I'm getting something went wrong during verifying account details

EDIT: Worked after selecting $55 plan (new account here)

  • I just purchased Samsung Galaxy S21 5G 256GB Grey, outright
    Yay!

  • Are there any negative implications of them doing a credit check? I've never had a credit card or a loan before or anything like that, so don't know a lot about it.

Just wanting to buy it outright.
