Selling A RTX 3060 GPU in VIC Lockdown - Should I Trust PayPal?

Hi all, looking to sell my 3060 to upgrade to a 3080/ti.

If the buyer pays via PayPal G&S, will they be able to reverse the transfer if I have proof of sending the item?

If the buyer pays via Bank Transfer/Osko/PayID, will they be able to reverse the transfer?

Would eBay be a viable solution, if we split fees 5% 5%?

Cheers

    CASH ON COLLECTION.

If that means having to wait, then wait. Not worth the risk.

If the buyer pays via PayPal G&S, will they be able to reverse the transfer if I have proof of sending the item?

Yes this is super easy to do. Happens all the time (item not as described, etc.)

If the buyer pays via Bank Transfer/Osko/PayID, will they be able to reverse the transfer?

This is much more difficult (but not impossible). Most of the risk here is they provide a fake evidence of transfer rather than the money actually being in your acocunt.

    • I’m not that dumb mate. :D would obviously check money shows up in account

      • OSKO/Payid - yet to see any reversals on these in my circle (apart from attempts at sending screen shots or showing scheduled payid then cancelling them)
Bank Transfer - yeah you can reverse it through either (a) dud cheque deposited into your account (b) stolen bank account. You can offset the risk a bit by asking your bank on the record if the funds are cleared (then you have a case against them if the funds are reversed), delay posting a few days (blame covid for delays) in case it is reversed.

Only hassle with Osko etc it is not always instant no matter what the brochures say. Especially for CBA. Very annoying for Gumtree transactions where you want to handover the goods but the bank hasn't done their bit and is holding onto the money for hours/a day? - so for that I tend to avoid Payid.

        • (b) stolen bank account.

I don't think anything stops this happening with Osko just same as bank deposit.

          • @stirlo: Oddly in my circle we have had no reversal from payid/osko via this method. So perhaps the banks are sucking it up.

      • You don't have to be dumb to fall for it however. It's an asymmetric battlefield with scammers.

You as the seller have no real experience with scams and are spending a comparatively small amount of time learning how to protect yourself.

The scammer spends dozens or hundreds of hours researching exactly how to make their scam work and it only takes one small oversight from you to fall into their trap.

        You've been a member since 2018.

With all due respect, you can't say "I'm not that dumb" and still come here and ask if PayPal is OK.

I wouldn't risk sending any high value item but especially not a GPU which is a very hot item at the moment
PayPal is definitely a no go, even Friends and Family payment method can be reversed.
Bank Transfer is harder to initiate a chargeback but can be done.

  • Avoid selling overseas, especially Russia

    • He wants me to send it to Buleen, 20k from me

      • Buleen doesn't exist. Bulleen does though :-)

So much risk for you here, especially as your card is a hot item for scammers. Ideally you and the buyer both make the trip for essential goods at a supermarket half way and make the exchange for cash.

Otherwise you or the buyer are wearing an uncomfortable level of risk.

For you to be relatively safe, they Bank Transfer/Osko/PayID to your account and you wait for the funds to appear before shipping. High risk for the buyer.

Can't you meet half way somewhere near you in person?.. more like let the seller come closer to you. I watch stuff get sold on Facebook all the time. Do you think they post heavy, bulky stuff or miraculously the buyer lives 4.99Kms away from the seller?

        • You can’t do that as far as I know. Because it’s considered a gathering. Please correct me if I am wrong

          • +1

@CrazyBargainCatcher: I'm gathering at McDonalds as I'm hungry down Bulleen road (or 8 kms from your pick up). It's essential that I eat and pay for it buy selling my GPU :P.
Edit: How many ppl do 'other stuff' using their essential worker status/personal care etc to travel.

  • How long is the Paypal G&S refund valid for?

Would eBay be a viable solution, if we split fees 5% 5%?

Just saw this revision. NO, eBay is even worse than PayPal which provides essentially 0 protection from scammers. With eBay you've just put another middle man in the picture that will also side with the buyer with essentially zero evidence (to protect their brand).

If you can't do cash in person then Osko/PayID is the next safest, just be certain the money is in your account and cleared before posting.

As someone who sold a gpu with PayPal payment many moons ago…don't! Cash only
Mine was essentially bought using a hijacked PayPal account. I thought I was ok as had transferred the funds to my bank account but nope! The owner of the account reported the fraudulent activity and my account went into debit and the debt collectors started calling me 2 days later!

  • If you haven't sold yet, list it on Gumtree then post it to eBay from there. There is a promotion which skips selling fees (2 items per month I believe), so you get every penny the buyer paid.

  • Where are you located? Can you PM me? if you haven't sold I might be interested :)
