  • Looks like a good deal to me…waiting for what others have to say before i buy it haha. Any idea what the warranty is like?

  • Agreed, very cheap

  • Seems like a stunning deal for the specs.

  • How's the graphics on that …. will be used for facebook games most of the times??? Would it be slow to load up? Thanks.

  • FYI, last gen i3 380M (still cheap tho)

    link to product page;
    http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/notebook/2010/Acer/Aspire/…

(not a very useful product page)

    • bit confused by your terminology, by last gen do you mean first gen? as opposed to second gen which would be the latest and have numbers starting with 2 (i.e. 2380M rather than 380M)?

      • last gen as in previous generation, 'latest gen' would refer to Sandy Bridge, or just 2nd gen! agreed on good price, graphics are basic but at least it comes with a 6 cell battery!

      • +1

I see what you mean by confusing terminology, I meant last as in previous, not last as in latest.

Gen 1 = Nehalem architecture (tock) (last generation)
Gen 1.5 = Westmere architecture (tick) (i3 380M is one of these)
Gen 2 = Sandy Bridge architecture (tock) (current generation)
Gen 2.5 = Ivy Bridge architecture (tick) (yet to be released afaik)

Not too bad but there is some useful info. The few downsides are probably:

      1366 x 768 pixel resolution (for a 15 inch)
      USB 2.0 ports
      Built-in mono speaker (??!!)
Estimated Battery life: 3.5 hours (typically means about 2+ hours in real world test)

But for $300 (incl shipping), well, you can't really complain.

The problem I have with Acer is that their laptops are cheaper than other well known brands because they have a tendency to cut corners and use lesser quality components/parts. I rather get a better more expensively build laptop and pay the extra. In other words, you get what you pay for.

      • I agree on the resolution for the screen being somewhat low.

However, it seems that 90% of laptops are bringing out these screen resolutions, regardless of price. With the other 10% being the gaming laptops.

Some don't want to game on a laptop but would like a higher res screen. Unfortunately, there is little choice for those that fit in this category at the moment (IMO).

I wonder what will happen when the tablets like the Asus Transformer Infinity come out with FullHD in such a small form factor. Maybe we will start seeing a change to whats considered the norm in regards to laptops.

For the price this is a great deal.

Which parts in particular are you talking about? What is your source for this bit of drivel???

We've been using them at work for years now, we have SFA problems! Some of the guys have even hung onto their old Gemstone series that are still powering on after 6+ years!

[edit] I see the negs have begun, gotta love the typical OzB neg with no counter-argument mentality. As usual, I suspect this guy is talking out of his rear, but let's see what he comes back with, eh? :p

        • +1

          My experience with laptops;

HP dv6 series, overheating issues. HP's in general loaded with a lot of crap extra software
Acer 'flexible', feel flimsy and plasticy NOT necessarily meaning short life, just feel cheap
Medion (Aldi), look nice, perform well, crap keyboard and abismal touchpad, had one that lasted 2 years while never being moved from the desk.
          Sony, overpriced POS

These are just experiences on specific models I have come across. Obviously not all models/ranges are the same. And to be honest, with the price of laptops, if it lasts 2 years you will probably be happy and buy another one (probably via ozbargain) and give the old one to your grandparents/parents/kids etc.

        • +1

I'm on the fence on this matter. I would agree that Acer tend to use low quality parts. However, I feel a lot of laptop manufacturers do as well and that should be noted.

I can't stand any laptop where your emphatically typing away and all you can hear is vibration/loose components due to their poorly designed inner structure. Unfortunately, going into Harvey Norman, JBHIFI, Clive peters, Clive Anthony, etc you will find most have this feel.

Stewballs, JMI not once meantioned that Acer were susceptible to breaking down. He stated they use less quality components to reduce cost. I agree with this statement and I don't feel it requires any source to prove its validity. It is common manufacturing knowledge, reduce cost of building, increase profit or sales. You do get what you pay for.

I am glad to hear the success stories your company has had in regards to utilising Acer's. 6+ years is a good lifespan for any electrical component to last. In contrast however, I have a 10 year old Lenovo that is in pieces tied together just from its cables/connections (wanted to test the durability :)) and it also turns on and functions. My point being that any electronic product has the ability to last, but it can also be about how it lasts.

I have ranted on long enough, neither posts previous of this one deserve negative votes. This one might however : )

        • I think you misinterpret my words. I say they have a tendency to use less premium parts (you know, like the plasticky feel of their casings that perpetuates their models), not necessarily that they are more susceptible to breakdowns as a result of using less premium parts (hence the statement "you get what you pay for"). If I wanted to say they have a reliability problem, I would have said so.

And I don't see why you have to be so up in arms over a little comment like that. I think the Acer brand represents "value for money" ie. not really inspired designs and not usually the leader of the pack in terms of looks/innovation.

        • +1

He stated they use less quality components to reduce cost. I agree with this statement and I don't feel it requires any source to prove its validity.

FFS fluberries, you don't seriously believe that nonsense do you??? Idiotic notions don't tend to require proof, that is why they generally aren't supported by any! That's why I've asked for a little simple corroboration, because unsubstantiated blanket statements like that tend to confuse noobs who might miss out on an otherwise decent bargain because of some ambiguous, out of context or uninformed comment on forums like OzB!

Please, spare me the manufacturing 101 lesson…of course all entry level laptops are going to cut corners on manufacturing costs, but you can't single out any particular brand as being better or worse in the class without backing that shit up with some logic. I still haven't seen any rationale to support the original assertion that I've quoted back in my reply? Backflips over terminology used don't count either! :p

Giving you guys the benefit of the doubt, it's clear you need to learn the difference between 'components' (which direct build quality & reliability) and superficial 'parts' which only really direct aesthetics! Whining about looks in a sub-$300 laptop thread is just pissing into the wind. You guys also need to get out more, the last few entry level Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell & Asus laptops I've seen have been pretty damn 'plasticky' too, and they cost more than $300 I can assure you!!! ;)

  • Does seem like a good deal

  • +1

Very very good deal, even though it's an acer. Under $300 and running an i3 at 2.5GHz and 4GB ram, awesome. This will no doubt get OzBargained!

  • +2

It seems a bit strange that all three of their computers for sale are the same price.

    • all different specs, but perf wise i3 pwns other 2 ftw!

  • It is. I'd call them up and check that the deal is legit, but can't atm.

If anyone does let us know,

  • +5

Just called them .. They said is legitimate… Delivered by registered post. If nobody home, pick up from local Post Office. At least that's what they told me.????

Can someone else confirm that as well by calling them.

    • Thanks, that's awesome. My grandparents need a new laptop and this will be perfect for them.

Cool bought one for my mum…

I'll let you all know how it goes.

    Does Acer have international warranty?

i so wish i needed one.. oh what the heck i'll get one anyway <— typical ozbargainer thought pattern

    • Same reason I now have 3 Playstation 3s :D

  • Sold out!!

  • Does anyone know how much power this would use sitting idle. I want to leave on 24/7.

    • Typically, you can use the max TDP provided by Intel to indicate the max power consumption the CPU will use (35W in this case), add about 6W for HDD, and maybe 10W for anything else in the system (assuming screen is off) probably around 50W under load, idle will be closer to <20W (power saving cpu, hdd goes to sleep etc). Also, the power supply will tell you the maximum power this laptop will pull, in this case 65W.

      I have a similar spec'ced laptop (i3 380M, 4gb, 640gb, 17") laptop which I leave running all the time to download torrents.

    • My laplop idles at around 44w. This is with an i7 which doesnt have the optimus technology.

      So around 20-35w ballpark

  • out of stock :/

  • Windows 7 Home Premium

Is it 32bit or 64bit version? The 4G memory probably only read as 3G under 32bit windows 7.

And what about the mother board? I hope it is not sis mother board as it has really bad integration with any CPU

  • Ordered two before they sold out…yay!!!

regarding warranty on HK stock…two things I would say to that.

Firstly its Myer so they have to (and will) adhere to Australian law which requires warrantys.

Secondly most if not all credit cards offer another 12 months warranty.

So thats two years warranty at a min?

  • Forget it. Already out of stock

    Broden stole mine :(

  • Wow..it's so cheap with a nice spec.

  • Whats the go with the international fee's in the reviews? Is that correct?

  • "Display Screen Technology CineCrystal" is that the glossy screen type? that's a deal breaker for some! most people i know like the matte screen, yet they still come out with glossy screens all the time, should be an optional add on!

    • Would be an option no one would take. I can't see any practical use for gloss screens other than to make it glimmer in a store window.

      • When I purchased a Dell laptop a few years back Glossy screen was an additional extra add on. We took it and when we got it we realised we shouldn't have got it. So disappointed with the glossy screen. Great and all but just too shinny in lots of areas. Wonder why not many laptops these days are sold with Matt screen option. Glossy sceens are just too shiny. Especially when in sunny areas.

      • +2

I know what you mean. :)

I hate glossy screens because a laptop is meant to be used outside and all I want is to see only is what is on the laptop, and not what brand of soda the guy behind me is drinking.

  • Anyone know where I could get something like this for around the same price? Thanks

  • Damn kicking myself that i missed this!!

  • +1

      • I called them up this morning and they called me back with the tracking number of the order, I can track the order with Aust Post website, Looks like it will arrive either today or tomorrow :)

        • Called them this morning and was given a tracking number which says my 2x laptops are at Perth Parcel centre. I live in Perth so hopefully I get them today/tomorrow? yay!

EDIT: ok so decided to ring Auspost to ask why it the tracking status was showing as at Perth parcel place yet it had been there since the 3/3.

He said all they had received was the electronic manifest and not the physical item.

So who knows when ill receive it :) could be this week could be next

  • I just got mine this morning :)

  • Mine arrived today (in Perth). However I never got the second email indicating the order had been dispatched nor a response to my email to them.

  • Still waiting here on the Gold Coast, Qld……

  • "Attempted Delivery - No one in attendance" at my work address in Perth today. /cries

I find eparcel contractors the worst for claiming they couldn't deliver.

Can't do a thing until it's hopefully dropped at a local post office.

    Anyone reviews yet? :)

    • Got mine today (Brisbane.) Paid for express.

      • Got mine today(Thursday)as well. Did not pay for express.

    • I find eparcel contractors the worst for claiming they couldn't deliver.

To the extent that's true, I've read it's because Australia Post negotiates such tight contracts the delivery drivers have to do as much as 20-30 deliveries an hour to make a reasonable income, so the moment they arrive at your address they've only got a few mins on average to already be at the next place.

      • …so the moment they arrive at your address they've only got a few mins on average to already be at the next place.

They could at least knock on the door or call out thru an open screen door though…I've been watching from inside the house when they pull up & caught them not even going past the mailbox, lazy sods!

  • after sorting out some dodgy eparcel delivery issues got my 2x today.

Just loaded up one of them and there is some serious bleeding issues on the left hand side of the monitor.

i.e. looks like its wet or slightly darker in a pool coming from the left hand side.

Pretty disappointing because apart from that I am happy with weight, look and feel of the unit.

I doubt ill be able to get a replacement…so its either put up with it or get a refund on that one I suppose.

I was planning to sell the second so haven't opened it yet.

EDIT: opened the second one and loaded it up…no issues with the screen. Glad I bought 2 as now I can return the faulty one for a refund and still have a cheap laptop. yay

    • +1

Whats the deal with the warranty? I know included it came with a piece of paper about how to go online and fill out a refund form or whatever it is. Has anyone tried contacting Acer directly and quoting the serial number or whatever and seeing if its covered by them for hopefully a year from date of purchase.

      • +1, I would contact Acer directly if you still want to keep the second laptop. Their warranty service is very good IME, they will send a courier to pick it up & it will be fixed or replaced & back to you within a fortnight! :)

        • Holy crap! If that is true then I would definitely just do that.

Was thinking refund was only option through myfind.

        • Called Acer they wouldn't do a direct warranty as myfind isn't a official reseller.

They said I would have to go back through myfind.

I just sold it "as is" for cash so I'm done with it all anyway. :)

        • Damn, that sucks dude, sorry to hear that.

  • Hope mine get delivered tomorrow (monday)

The tracking details haven't been update for a while, so much for express shipping,
