Not a huge fan of Japanese whiskey at the moment. Rarity has bumped it's price up, but the taste of a 12yr old yamazaki/hakushu is still that of a $100 bottle.

Haven't tried this one in particular though.

      Whisky

      • Whisky
        From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Whisky or whiskey is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash…..

        • If I'm not mistaken, whiskey with an e is for non Scottish origin whiskies like Japanese or Irish.

@shiny1: Japanese is without the e. It's very inconsistent. Apparently because Japanese whisky is modelled off the Scottish method.

Rule of thumb, if the country has an "e" in its name then so does it's whiskey.

      Agree with this one

Lived in Japan for a couple of years, $15 bottles of Nikka found at 7-11 have crept to over $100 here now. The aged stuff was $50 before it sky rocketed in popularity and the rarity.

I'd rather pass on a beautiful 17yr old taketsuru for $600+ asking price now days and buy 6 $100 bottles of quality scotch to get variety and not over pay for the rarity

Just to show how much the rarity has pushed the price up outside of Japan:
      Retail price in Japan: 4200 JPY + tax = 4620 JPY ≈ 58 AUD
Retail price in Australia: 125–170 AUD

For comparison, a Laphroaig 10 year old (also owned by Suntory):
Retail price in Britain: 38 GBP ≈ 72 AUD
      Retail price in Japan: 5600 JPY + tax = 6160 JPY ≈ 77 AUD
Retail price in Australia: 80–85 AUD

  • This is price matching / beating against Vintage Cellars:

While this price range is ok, I'd want a decent Cashback on top to bother. Probably my second favourite J Whisky. Used to be #1

The Hakushu is really nice but it's crazy how much it's gone up in price even just over the past 2-3 years. No way I'd pay $170 for this stuff.

Here is the 12 year going going for $145 in 2017.

I bought this discounted for $80 a few years before. It was nice. However I can get whisky I enjoy more at $80.

I cannot recommend it at $128

    • Totally agree. Definitely not worth the asking price.
