Great Modem/Router VDSL +2 That Doesn't Cost The Moon?

I read the previous posts but didn't see this exactly.

We have FTTH and I'm using an ancient router.

I need a VDSL+ to plug in the phone.

Current TP Link is terrible even at line of site. Single story, modem in middle of a small home.

Best VDSL and coverage for the $.

Call your ISP and ask for their unit. Maybe they will throw it in for free if you have been a customer for a while! Job done!

  • FTTP doesn't use VDSL. Who provides the VoIP telephone service? Can you rely on mobile only?

The UNI-V ports are on the FTTP termination device (NTD)
if the ISP provides voice over a UNI-V port, all you have to do is plug in a POTS phone into one of those ports.

How to find it? Locate your NBN network termination device on your wall and remove the plastic cover.
    You'll see this https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/20/NTD_cove…
Plug your phone into the port labelled UNI-V

If your ISP provides VoIP (voice over internet connection) then you will need what is called an analog telephone adapter (ATA). It looks like this and it allows you to connect a POTS phone to a remote VoIP server. In some cases, your ISP can send you a pre-provisioned ATA (maybe free, maybe paid), but you can buy your own from a computer store if you wish.

Do not that VOIP and voice services do not usually come free with your broadband plan, it is something you'll need to add-on to your nbn service.

  • By FTTH do you mean FTTN / FTTB? FTTP doesn’t need a VDSL modem. If former, find a Telstra Gateway second hand on Gumtree/eBay. They’re Broadcom chipset and go cheap. They’re hackable too.

  • The issues we're having are due to our old modem. I'd like a modem which can send to the entire small house. Right now, I'm 5-6m line of site (nothing in between) and the 2.4 is 2-3 bars. 5Ghz won't stay connected. ABB let us transfer our old number, but we need a modem w/vdsl2 to activate. Previously w/Internode.

    • A VDSL2 modem is for FTTN, FTTB and FTTC.

FTTP uses GPON with a fibre NTD.

Purchase a router w/ built-in VoIP or ask Aussie BB to sell you their ATA solution. How much do you want to spend?

    • Many of the VDSL modems you buy from computer stores are actually modem routers. They are a combination of two devices — a VDSL modem, and a Wi-Fi router, married together inside the same device.

If you are on FTTP, you do not need a VDSL modem — just buy a pure router. Contact ABB as they can also sell you a pre-provisioned device that makes it easier to setup.

  • Apologies— I wrote VDSL (out of habit) but meant VoIP. We have a cool older landline phone we're fond of and would like to have it working again. ABB doesn't support direct connect UNI-V. The ABB Netcomm offering has mediocre reviews— I want to trade-up, not down. Not fond of Google mesh.

Our current router, hooked to the NBN box is getting worse every day. 5Ghz drops off (not even showing as a network option in the list until restarting the router). 2.4Ghz low range at short, open distances.

I don't mind paying for something good, our average devices connected at any given time are only 3-5, so hoping for something less than $300.

    Ta!

  • Would this be a decent choice?

AVM FRITZ!Box 7590 Dual Band Wireless AC1700 VoIP Modem Router

Have a work acquaintance that said it's very good. Wondering if it would be a better choice than the Netgear Nighthawk XR500 Pro router + ABB Grandstream HT812 VoIP Phone Adapter. The XR500 would be purchased used.

    Thank you

  • I'm tossing up between the AVM FRITZ!Box 7590 and the TP-Link Archer VR2800.

Moving from HCF NBN to FTTB.

My Synology RT2600ac will work in bridge mode now.
