iPad PC USB Adaptor (Allows iPad Charging from a PC USB Port): $1 from Dick Smith

60

Found a bunch of these DSE iPad PC USB adaptors today selling at just $1 (a friend of mine purchased one just recently when were on sale at $8, down from $10).

Although iPads can be charged from most Apple computers directly from the USB port, this is not the case with many PCs. This adaptor allows iPads to be charged to any USB port.

I bought 4 of them (work PC, home PC, laptop and a spare) for a grand total of $4.

I believe this is in-store only as it is no longer showing on the DSE website.

Drawing more power from a PC usb port isn't exactly a good idea

        Might damage your motherboard?

For ASROCK motherboard users, there's a driver that you can download called App Charger that allows your mobo to fast charge Apple devices.

      • iPad charges at 2amp, a typical USB port is able to supply 0.5amp only

These don't actually draw extra power, they just remove the data connection when connecting an iPad to a PC, making it think it's just a power point. Obviously it wont charge quickly though.

I would be surprised if you couldn't find this in any Dick Smith store. I work at DS so I saw the amazing failure of these products. Heaps were ordered, hardly any were sold. My store has like 20 in stock, we've never sold one. The price keeps dropping just because noone wants them. They started for (I think) $19.95 and just kept on dropping. They're actually at a loss atm (below cost). There are literally hundreds around, and I'm surprised you can't get them online because there were heaps in the distribution centre too.

Glad someone was able to make use of them!

      • You say they are now selling below cost. They would darn well want to be if you were selling them at $19.95.

          Yeah $20 was pretty lolworthy.

My gigabyte mobo also had a BIOS flash that allowed my usb ports to supply the amps to charge them ipad thingies.

  • How does this work? I used to have a dongle to bump the voltage from 5V to 6V to charge my old Nokia. Maybe it's something similar?

See above. Tricks it into thinking it's a power point connection as opposed to a data connection.

ASUS have a tool called AI Charger, I installed it on my 4 year old Gigabyte Motherboard, works fine it charges my iPad2 and data still works.

  • Just passes pins 1 and 4 through (gnd & v+) not 2 and 3 (data)
