$200 extra for the 5700U (rebadged 4800U) might be worth it for some. Shame you can't upgrade the 45w battery to make it a full work day laptop.

    • +2

In case anyone was wondering what benefit the 5700u has over 5500u - based on short research it seems like better multicore performance (eg rendering etc); single core seems fairly similar (from synthetic benchmarks)

Got this for the kids for school. (16gb)

    Pros
    Solid performance from Ryzen
    great keyboard.
Battery life is adequate for school if managed.

    Cons
screen is a bit dim, and noticeable bleeds in corners on black.
    not so light.

    7/10 would buy again.

    • +1

for school and portability and if your budget is close to $1,000 then something like the Lenovo Ideapad s540 is better.

      • +1

Do you have a direct link to buy please - I can only see it as discontinued. Cheers.

      • S540 owner here, 100% agree with u.

The Ideapad is not as solid as the Thinkpad in terms of build quality. I have a similar Ideapad and it feels like it is about to break, to be honest.

        • +2

Yep. Thinkpads may not be the tanks they were in the IBM days, but are still very solid and robust compared to most.

@kapone: I bought IdeaPad 5 Pro for $989 from student store. Ryzen 5 5600U, 16GB memory, 500GB hard disk, 56.5w battery, 300nit 2.2k display, IR camera, backlit keyboard. Ordered in July, received in August. It was a great deal for me.

  • How's this compare to the Dell G15? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/645421

    • Different use case. E15 is ThinkPad more of office stuff. G15 looks heavy.

      • Which CPU is better? and by how much?

        • Reasonably confident that the 5600H (the one on the g15) would have higher performance, looks around 20-25% faster in single core processing. That said, it also draws more power, as it's designed more for performance than battery efficiency.

    • +2

G15 will be more gaming oriented.
      - G15 is ~2.5kg, the E14 is around a kilogram lighter
      - G15 has a 3050 as the dedicated gpu, whereas the E14 just has the integrated gpu
      - This one would likely have better battery performance; 56Whr battery on the G15 vs 45Whr on the E14, but with less power consumption on this one (60Hz screen, no RTX 3050, lighter load CPU)

Overall, if you're looking for something you're likely to be carrying around all day, you'd probably want this one. If you're looking for a gaming laptop at this price point, might want the G15. Like CrypticM said:

the idea of soldered ram just kills me… that is the component you will most likely to upgrade if you ever need to.
Still on the lookout for a development laptop with powerful CPU (around 20k mark) and ability to go 32G ram with bargain price

    • You can customise it to add another 16GB for $190 for 24GB total

      • Can only add 8GB if you want to keep it dual channel.
Would be good if it came with 16GB soldered, then in 2-3 years add another 16GB and pickup more capacity and unlock dual channel.

        • If you add a 16gb stick then out of the 24gb total 16gb of it will run at dual channel speeds and you'll only see reduced speeds when utilizing that last 8gb. I'd say that's fine for most people as the kind of tasks you'd be doing to push it over the 16gb probably aren't as speed critical but just require lots of capacity.

      • Can you add another stick yourself? Or does it have to be soldered as well?

        • If I'm not mistaken I believe you can do it yourself installing something like this or this.

    • I sympathise with the sentiment but I suppose for the average personal/office user it's probably not a huge issue - definitely not enough to be a deal breaker for most.

Out of curiosity, what dev are you doing that requires 32GB of RAM? I haven't done much industry work but from what I understand most of the time the codebase sits in a repo and you pull on an as needs basis?

      • Running virtual machines will eat through RAM quick, as will running machine learning models.

      • Doing a relatively large docker build I've had vmmem (WSL2 process) eating 24G on windows.

      • Yeah myself running all my tech stack in docker containers as well, always like 95% of my RAM is used(my laptop is 16GB), so would definitely want 32GB+ RAM.

Besides, Chrome, VSCode all eat a lot of RAMs lol.

      • As other people have pointed out, 32g dual channel is like a must these days for modern dev that utilises any kind of virtualization + chrome + Visual Studio. It is easy to understand, when normal laptop is 8gb, with better ones have 16gb, the dev machine will easily require more ram than them.
My requirement is quite straightforward, only 2 points :)
        - can be expanded to 32gb dual channel ram
        - CPU around 20k score mark as mentioned above with 3k single thread score

      • tl;dr what they teach at uni != real world requirements. Who would have guessed?

      • Productivity. More ram reduce the amount of out of memory code implementations. You simply can load more data and do more calculations without worry or having to adapt code using other libraries . For example, with 32gb of ram you can load a lot of stuff with pandas, otherwise, with lower amounts you may need to refsctor with out of memory algorithms/libraries. Of course, if you plan to deal with large datasets, best to code properly from the start but sometimes small stuff blow up in requirements - having 32-64gb on the laptop may indicate a report is finished today instead of next week because of the necessary code refactoring or that you need to load all the things again in the super computer/server.

    • Got a Mechrevo Code 01 last year (aka Schenker VIA 15 Pro), 4800H, 32GB, SN750 1TB and 91wh battery. Blazing fast, super light and battery lasts forever. It can even outperform my new 5800H laptop in most CPU related benchmarks; Cinebench R15 @ 1900+, R20 @ 4300+.

Pity they didn't get to release Code 02 or 10 this year, it would have destroyed any competitors under $2k

If you have access to the education store, you can get the E15 Gen 3 AMD with 300nits IPS, 256GB storage, 8gb 3200 RAM, 45wh battery for $889. Not sure if this coupon will still work with it though, I ordered this before the post came out.

    EDIT: 14" version is $899

    • Seems like a good deal.

    • +1

I bought IdeaPad 5 Pro for $989 from the education store. Ryzen 5 5600U, 16GB memory, 500GB hard disk, 56.5w battery, 300nit 2.2k display, IR camera, backlit keyboard. Ordered in July, received in August.

      • Still regretting to miss that deal. Have requested live chat to give me that deal and they refused. But how come $989? Wasn’t it $1,048?

  • Would anyone know the delivery time for this model? Sometimes the Lenovo deals take a long time to ship

    • I bought this model for my wife back on the 11th when there was 15% cashback. Our estimated arrival date is 26th - so over 2 weeks.

  • Big question is when is this going to be delivered? Had to cancelled my order last time because the delivery date went from September to December and to Jan 2022. Called them to ask and they can’t tell when it is going to be delivered.

    • Just before ordering, call or chat with levono sales team. Ask them if they can expedite the order. They will give their rep number and mail id. Once you finish the order, add this rep number to your order( you can see this optional step). Send this order details to rep email, they will send necessary info to plant for expediting order.

( Came to this process yesterday and this drastically cuts the delivery times).

  • which is better this laptop or ideapad slim 5 https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-5-serie…

    thanks

    • Don't buy Ideapad slim 5. Buy IdeaPad slim 5 pro.

  • I understand that the 8GB of RAM is soldered…but does anyone know if I can remove the back panel myself and install another stick of RAM? I see that you can upgrade the RAM through the Lenovo website but they're charging $95 for an additional 8GB…I can grab an 8GB stick off of Amazon for about $60. The OzBargainer in me says do it myself to save $35. Thanks in advance!
