While your probably right about the shock doing that, I hope you realise that it could have happened regardless of it being shock proof, externals are known to die randomly and much more often then desktop HDD's, you need to keep a backup.
a shockproof drive is not necessarily going to stop you losing data. if you have any important information then it should be backed up. it is that simple.
Agree with both of the above comments - being shockproof won't necessarily protect against data loss. It will however reduce the risk of data loss due to rough handling of the drive.
Just because I have a backup, doesn't mean I want my data at any greater risk to corruption!
(for the record, the lacie disk was the backup. unfortunately it became the only copy at a time of changing over laptops, jobs, country of residence, etc., so not really a backup at all for those unfortunate few months!).
Shockproof is only of any use when the drive is in operation - when its most vulnerable. harddrives can actually withstand a fair amount of a smack when they're not running.
If it was in your luggage, chances are it suffered some other fate, or was hit hard enough that any drive will practically kark it.
Seems very expensive
very. Considering that 3TB external HDD's are going for the same price…sure, they're USB2…but I think I'd rather 3 x the storage…
cant compare portable vs non portable.
you pay a premium for portable USB powered vs. external non usb powered.
There's a distinct difference between having to carry a brick with power pack and cabling vs the equivalent of a thin paperback with 1 light cable.
That difference is what you pay extra for.
There's always one…
Oops - didn't realise it was a portable drive…my bad…
I paid $89 for a WD USB 3.0 portable 1TB drive a while ago…but hey that was before the HDD prices went crazy…
But I'm guessing its not a great deal anyway, as no one is +'sing the deal…
It's expensive, and i don't give a damn if this price is the cheapest for this model in the entire world.
I don't think that is a valid reason to give a negative. If indeed it is the best price for this device then it is a bargain. So to negative it based on that is absolute rubbish.
Can you find a cheaper price? Best price I can find on a 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" is $139 + shipping

Which makes this not a bad deal.Edit: $139 at OW for WD 1TB
http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…Lol - I was about to come in and say get a Buffalo from JB Hifi seeing as I grabbed one for $98 with free shipping (pre-flood price natch).
But then I go online and see they are now selling them at $178. Having said that, I'm sure I saw the black one at around $120 in-store at Chadstone a few weeks ago - but don't hold me to that.
Is the 10GB online storage free permanently*?
*permanently, meaning as long as Lacie stays in business.
Don't buy a lacie. Their customer service is crap.
Also why would you want to buy something from a company who does not even understand what they're doing and is French? Other than french food and design, why would you want to buy anything french "engineered".
I'm negging this for the BRAND not the deal.
just wondering which sw do you used to capture that screen?
If you're looking for a good screen capture tool, try FSCapture: http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm
It has the ability to take scrolling screen capture, if that's what you're looking for. Very easy to use, and annotate screenshots.
It has the ability to take scrolling screen capture
Thanks! That's what I want.
Just used it….very good app! I wish I can give you 10+ :D
And if you use FireFox, just get the "Screen Capture Elite" addon.
thanks for this too!
neg it for being french :)
this is a joke right? why is this $149. $153 gets you a 3TB from dick smith. why isn't this negged to death.
Because everyone else can tell the difference between 2.5" and 3.5".
I owned a Lacie Porsche Design portable hard drive a few years back. It similarly had a "tough aluminum casing". I carried it around a lot (lots of business travel) always in hand luggage. Obviously at some point it took a knock (though no markings to the case), and lost 40GB of data, including data files and a gigs worth of photos - randomly, across a large file structure.
Since then, I won't purchase any portable hard-drive that's not shock-proof (happily using Transcend StoreJet 500GB Shockproof Portable HDD for the past couple of years).
Aluminum case means nothing if the internal drive can't handle a knock! Function over form is important in this case!
