      lame

    • That's irrelevant and off-topic. The OP is talking about Richard M. Stallman's number plate.

  • +42

Paying annually for these is just stupid. If it was a once-off, may be tempted, but annual charges on top of registration? No thanks.

Edit: Hahaha, the $474/yr cost isn't enough, there's a $180-299 "style fee" on top too…

    • +29

      I agree.
Whoever pays an annual charge for a rego plate should be lifetime banned from OZB…

      • +2

I feel like those who pay for customized plates are either rich or overcompensating… or both. I do understand that some biz do it to promote their branding though.

        • +1

Before they charged an annual fee, I thought the opposite. Why would you spend multiple 10's of thousands of dollars and not have a personalised plate!

I had Sydney Olympic personalised plates on my car until some knob stole it, and because they didn't recover both plates, I couldn't use them again.

I'm talking standard plates with your choice of letters numbers here, not custom plates with a word etc.

        • +1

I always struggled to understand why people paid for plates which just have the make/model of an otherwise unexciting car. I guess if I could afford say, a McLaren 570S then sure, why not… but on say, a Mercedes C200 or BMW 320i, surely the money would've been better spent on getting a better (or upgraded/higher spec) car.

          • +2

@jace88: It costs between $600-$10000 for a number plate.

Most options on a car are largely useless and cosmetic. There's nothing wrong with getting a cool plate on a cheapo car too.

            • +2

@Orico: As in, I don't know why you'd get a licence plate which just advertises the make/model of a car eg MBC200.

              • +3

@jace88: Ok fair enough. That's lame to do.

I'd rather put something like VIRGIN

                edit: VIRGIN is taken!

              • +1

@jace88: Yeah I don't get that too. I would get something like jace88 on my plate.

                • -1

@fredk1000: I would too… except when I saw the price and decided I'd rather spend the five hundy elsewhere each year.

            • +2

@Orico: How can people not wrap their head around some like to customise their possessions? Better spent on this or that… maybe they can do both?

        • -2

Says the Apple fanboy that pays $2000 a year for a phone with barely any change from the previous model. Now that's overcompensating.

          If you're android then I apologise. :)

Saw a MERCDZ plate on a Merc C sometime ago. Thought it might be cheaper to buy a massive Merc logo on ebay to stick across the car.

      • We don't in Victoria… pay an annual rate that is. Our Mustang plates look better too (bit more $ upfront), which is what I have.

Says the Apple fanboy that pays $2000 a year for a phone with barely any change from the previous model. Or maybe $800 for their crap tier headphones? Apple fanboys should be banned first.

        If you're android then I apologise. :)

        • Apologies accepted :)

You only pay annually if you want custom letters/numbers.
If you just want a restyle, it's a one time fee.

Agreed that it's ridiculously overpriced though.

    • +1

Agree, the NSW government is greedy! In WA, you only pay for the custom plate once, no ongoing annual fee.

      • True, but never a 20% discount in WA :-(

        • +1

also less style range…i want the JDM style plates…bcos…JDM…

voluntary tax seems like the best kind to me? they need to raise money somehow.

        • voluntary tax seems like the best kind to me? they need to raise money somehow.

Absolutely. Let the market do it's magic!

      • +3

Same in QLD. I have my initials and just pay it once. That's the way it should be. How can they honestly justify something that costs them nothing after they have been made to maintain over a standard number/letter combo in a system.

        • Their argument was they're capturing the future value and encouraging tranfer if not reused. It's a bit like website registry. People would buy the good combos then just hold them forever, and make their own profit in reselling.

Now you have to pay annually so there's less camping on specific plates - you generally want to use it or sell it on, otherwise you're paying for something with no return.

Even though it's overpriced, there is an argument on both sides.

        • NSW government wants to earn money everywhere, stamp duty for the house will change from once to annually also in the future. Come on everyone move to QLD XD

    • +4

Years ago it used to be a one-off fee to get a basic personalised plate in NSW (the fully personalised 'prestige' custom ones still had an annual fee). If you had a personalised plate before they added the annual fee for the basic personalised plates you were grandfathered in. The rest of my family are fine but I just missed out by about six months from memory after getting my first car in 2013…

NSW is the only state or territory where all personalised plates have an annual fee.

      • +3

Good old privatisation. 15 year agreement to Plate Marketing Pty Ltd to operate the myPlates business which should expire in 2025?

    • +1

Paying annually for these is just stupid. If it was a once-off, may be tempted, but annual charges on top of registration? No thanks.

Depends on your perspective. If you want a personalised plate, the charges may seem exorbitant. But if you don't care, but want as much consolidated revenue taken from someone other than yourself, they are a great idea.

  • Any good plate ideas?

I hate my auto-generated rego number, but some of the styling of the plates do look nice.
Beats advertising the 'stealership' I bought my car from.

    • The dealership name would only be on the plater holder if I recall? you can easily just unscrew it or buy a default one from the reject shop or something.

      • +2

        Nope, imprinted on the plates.
I could just scrub it off with steel wool…

        • Didn't think it was legal to write on/deface number plates…

        • wow really? i thought like the commenter above it was illegal to tamper with the actual plate.

          • +1

@KBZ: They're not tampered with, MyPlates allows them to order plates with their dealership details imprinted but there is a minimum order etc..

The really shit thing is most dealers pass the cost (about 100 bucks) onto the buyer vs supplying yellow/black standard issue plates for less cost (about $50)

  • -8

Anytime anyone sees a custom plate, no matter what the car is, they're thinking "What a W4NK3R"

    • -2

Looks like the custom plate try-hards are insecure as well… who would've guessed?

Total rip off to begin with, those idiots killed their own market by being too greedy.

Rare sight to see custom plates in NSW anymore, only on commercial vehicles.

    • LOL! Come to Eastern Suburbs or where the habibs live.

      • -1

Yes !! We all have custom plates

  • lucky for those that had customised plate numbers and you only had to pay a once off fee, which was before 2010 or something? dunno but yeah paying an annual fee for customised license plate sucks - they ways people are trying to rip you off.

my personal peeve is when merchants charge the 1.5% or whatever for credit card surcharge. what they can't afford to take in this charge when they charge you for XXX item/product/service - stingy

Cheers OP, finally getting rid of those disgusting yellow plates!

  • Thanks OP just ordered a new set.

I've seen REDASS on a red holden ute outside Sydney Trains in Burwood

    • It’s on a red Ford Falcon ute, not a Holden.

      • Ok i stand corrected then , they both look very similar from the back. thought it was funny but didn't take a picture so i could not remember exactly what model.
