I am getting a fixed rate home loan with Westpac.
With it I can get a free Altitude rewards or Qantas rewards credit card (Qantas card as an extra $50 fee).
Which points scheme is better for buying Gift cards or house hold items? (Given we will not be flying for the next 6 months or more)?

If you're looking at the Altitude card, you can always transfer the point to your Qantas account.
The bonus is, if you decide to keep and not transfer or want to send to Virgin or the likes, you can still do so as well.
If it's important in your decision-making, you may want to check the points value comparison. I've had the Altitude card for around 20 years now and figured something for free (in a sense, not taking the annual fee into my point here), then I'm not overly worried about a small variable on the points percentage.
I'm not sure about the Qantas card, however, I do know my Black Altitude card offers unlimited points earnings each month, the Platinum, Gold, and standard are capped. The Black MC is also a World MC which has a few extra bonuses and also includes a few airport lounges passes with Priority. Priority doesn't really exist in AU though, it's nothing more than a cafe in the Qantas and Virgin terminals and not a lounge at all. OS they are much better. Although if you are usually flying a lot, chances are, you will be in the airline or partners airlines lounge anyway.
Travel insurance is reasonable with the Black program, and assume it's not too bad with the other cards. I'd imagine it's similar with the Qantas card also.
Hope this helps a little…
