  • bought this from the same deal as you OP….agreed its a great looking & wearing watch, with cool details and a really nice leather strap.
it really is a pleasure to wear…however, it is a fussy watch being an automatic and likes to be worn every day or two or else youre resetting and winding regularly
i didnt know this when i purchased it (my first automatic movement) and hopefully its helpful to others considering purchasing. its still a great watch but its not set & forget like eco-drive or quartz powered movements

    • +1

You need to have the habit to wind it up same time everyday

      • …same time? does this keep the movement accurate?
how many winds of the crown would you recommend?

        • +1

You kinda get the hang of it. My grandfather would wind his watch with the 10am news. From memory (decades ago) the crown feels tight after certain number of winds. Not sure if modern auto watches are different.

        • Just so you don't forget I suspect
Could have easily been a quartz, but plenty of reasonable cheap automatic movements.

Looks alright for the price though, most citizens are fairly boring by nature and nothing special. Definitely wouldn't pay $400 lol.

Some pretty good homages around for $100ish (Pagani designs), sometimes the brands you know after better quality but they are definitely pushing the boundaries spec wise.

A few Quartz casios and cheap/reduced Seikos go alright, still nice to have an automatic or two

    • +1

Could buy an automatic watch winder. Cost around $40 for the cheapest model and means your watch wont stop

      • +3

They would be alright if you wear the same watch almost every day, otherwise I personally think they just wear out your movement vs sitting in the drawer if you aren't using it. plus, once you have several watches you'd need more watch winders. It's pretty quick setting the time and date to be honest, and I don't mind doing it. Most automatics run fast/slow so would have to adjust anyway.

        • Wow didnt know movements could get worn out, thought it was just the spring.

          • +2

@Jenny Death: For automatics you are suppose to service every 3-5 years, obviously you wouldn't bother for cheap ones as the service can easily cost more than the watch. I recently had to get a service on my Oris, no issues but it had been 8 years and thought I'd better. They replace the oils and whatnot, make sure everything is working properly and general clean. Wasn't cheap but could be up for more costs otherwise (overhaul). All up 10-12 weeks sent off to Melbourne and they could only get it to +9.8 seconds per day.. bit average if you ask me, my local guy said he could have got it to +2 seconds.

Just something to consider, and makes Quartz a bit more appealing.

            • @G-rig: Haha yeah… Tbh i just wear the same quartz most of the time since i tend to do a fair amount of timing so the stop watch is useful for me, plus im always worried about getting the face scratched up.

Nice find Op. Also noticed some other good deals -

    Casio G-Shock DW5600BBMA-1D $59.00
    Casio G-Shock DW5700BBMB-1D $59.00

Citizen Quartz Gold BI1043-01E $54.99 Old post.

geez …that citizen diver is dirt cheap. change the strap and it would come up nice!

      • +1

Worth noting that although it looks like a rotating bezel, it isn't.

At least according to Amazon, it's a fixed bezel.

I've considered one in the past but that was a deal breaker for me.

        • yeh its a 'diver styled' watch isnt…still, it the looks the part

        • If you want a gold & silver quartz dive watch with rotating bezel =

Casio Duro MDV106G-1AV $80.60. Old post.

          Don't forget 6% cashrewards.

      Citizen Men's 41mm Analog Chronograph AN3610-80E $74.99

not to my taste …but a citizen chrono for $75 is a steal!

      • Yeah that's pretty good but I would probably spend another $25 for this 100m Eco-Drive -

        Citizen Eco-Drive BM7411-83L $99.99.

        • eco-drive & a blue dial…what more could you want? :)

    • WatchNerd, my wallet hates you, just so you know lol.
bought the DW5600BBMA-1D, plus the jelly blue dw5600 for $99

      • Ha but I didn't post this deal or the jelly blue.
Please seek help for your watch buying addiction.

        • but you made me look for other cheap dw5600s!!!

This one for 219$ is good. Paid 269$ from Starbuy a few months back.
    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/citizen-mens-automatic-titanium…

    • Looks like a Citizen version of the cocktail time

      • Yes that's right. Very similar for a fraction of the cost.

Also blue dial looks black in the shade or at night. Changes colour if you look from a different angle.

    • oh yessss. i bought that one the other week, along with the black dial variant. titanium all the things!

    • Ahh damn sold out. Was going to get it for my brother bday. Didn't think about it yesterday. ☹️

  • a citizen chrono?but not my taste.

Seems like a good deal with Klarna based on past deals..

  • +1

if you're buying more than one watch, don't forget the amex kogan statement credit deal if you're targeted and would rather not deal with klarna and more credit checks ;)

    • good point. I think my credit is decent. Will too many enquires hurt me.. i.e future loans, credit cards etc

      • +1

i reckon i've got a good credit rating as well (always pay off cards, never late), but what annoys me with klarna is they'll do a check on your first purchase, and if you don't keep using it, they'll do another credit check after 90 days.

i don't have a hope of buying a house so i'm not concerned with being knocked back for a loan lol

        • +1

thanks for pointing that out, mate.

          ditto buying a house, lol.

  • +1

    Got mine delivered today.

Pretty happy for the price (6% off Kogan gift card -> $89.29 delivered as didn't want to mess around with Klarna).

Nice pilot watch look, leather band is not terrible and reasonably comfy. Definitely amenable to varying the looks with a range of different bands.

Has good lug curvature so hugs my mid-sized wrist quite well and doesn't look as bulbous as some can with a 42mm dial.

As per some online reviews, lume is relatively short-lived, but nice and clear on all hour markers, hour and minute hands. Sticker on back states "Assembled in China", but don't think you can expect otherwise at this price point.

Overall for the price I am very happy to have a pilot-look automatic, from major Japanese watch brand, with 5 year warranty delivered for under AU$100.

Will guage the accuracy over the next little while and report back :-).

    • +2

Getting about 10-15 sec gain per day.

Pretty happy with that for an automatic at this price point.

Still very happy with the purchase.

      • on yours, how long does the power reserve lasts once fully wound/charged?

        • +1

Haven't really checked as there is nothing on the dial to indicate when it is fully wound, but guess about the 40 hour mark.

Think the 60h listed on some sites selling it would be wildly optimistic, as none of my automatic watches in the value end price range get too far beyond 40h.

This site suggests the movement in these has a 45h reserve.

          • @opposablethumbs: yeah im a little concerned …no way does mine get that.
might even need to look at warranty…i think i only pull 18hours tops. its a little frustrating setting and winding everyday/day and a half
might have to do some proper timed tests and see

            • +1

@franco cozzo: Will try to do a timed test for you sometime this week.

              • @opposablethumbs: thankyou …i will do a couple as well then i can work out what to tell CS
i was so concerned about it i googled the Miyota 8210 movement as well and saw it should run much longer
also i noticed something concerning the other day: when i was setting the time the minute / hour hands seem to drag across the seconds hand so much so the seconds hand momentarily went anti clockwise
i wonder if theres something wrong with the movement or assembly?

                • +1

@franco cozzo: The anti-clockwise movement is normal and often called poor man's hacking.

Often only works when at low power, but as the second hand doesn't stop when you pull the crown out two stops (I.e. hacking) is a way to set the time for seconds hand.

                • +1

                  @franco cozzo: Spoke too soon.

Stopped 10 min. shy of 46h (post below stating 48h is wrong).

            • +1

@franco cozzo: Wound the watch a fair bit, then wore for about 6 hours while fairly active, wound a couple of times while wearing, then one good wind before I set it down on the table.

Coming up for 48h now & still going, so just thought I'd give you the heads up.

The winding mechanism has no hard stop like on old school hand wound only watches & no charge indicator, so hard to tell when "fully" wound, but if you get anything less than 40h after wearing several hours, then a healthy amount of hand winding, probably best to seek a replacement.

              • +1

@opposablethumbs: thanks for explaining the 'poor mans hacking' behaviour and thanks for testing the duration of power reserve..
have been wearing and winding a little more regularly and its holding good time and i havent had to reset
just need to do the duration now…
great talking to someone with the exact same watch im having 'issues' with or its me just getting used to living with an auto…. cheers mate.

                • +1

                  @franco cozzo: Most welcome.

Still enjoying mine. Like the look and feel a great deal as always coveted a pilot and nothing that similar already in my collection.

Have a decent collection of mostly automatics and none really getting a lot of wrist time while WFH, but have been wearing this one a fair bit when going out for anything.

At this price a very solid beater, so will be interested to see how it fares with the knocks and scrapes of life over time.

              • +1

                @opposablethumbs: did some tests. i got: 44h 40m, 44h 30m, 44h 15m so looking ok now.
i must have been underwinding for fear of overwinding the movement
your tips helped…im definitely more comfortable with it now. cheers

                • @franco cozzo: Most welcome.

The winding mechanism on these doesn't really have a stop like on a traditional hand-wind only movement, so unlikely to be able to overwind these - it'll just reach max. then not add any more.

I'm still enjoying mine whenever I go out.

Style and size of hands and numbers makes it a very easy to read watch with a great pilot style aesthetic :-).
