      For gaming, don’t waste your time or money. You will see zero difference between any Gen 3 NVMe drive when it comes to loading times.

      FWIW, I own a Samsung Pro NVMe and found almost zero difference in real world from a regular SSD.

          If you’re transferring huge amounts of files daily for work, large 50-100gb video files for example where the difference between 500mb/s and 2000mb/s is a significant time difference.

          For game loading times not a chance you’ll notice. I’m pretty sure Linus did a video on game loading using an SSD, a HDD and an NVMe drive and nobody could tell the difference in a blind test.

            @Pelicannn: Spot on. I went from a nvme doing 3000 read speeds to a pcie3 that's does over 5000, and there is no noticeable difference in windows loading or games.

            But I didn't mind having those higher benchmark speeds, as there wasn't a huge price difference at the time.

          I’d pick the largest NVMe drive you can afford from a reputable brand like WD or Samsung (1-2TB) and consider their TBW maximum as well as QLC/TLC etc.

              @[Deactivated]: I read on here of two people who had an NVMe drive fail after reaching only a small percentage of TBW in the past week or so. It’s an educated guess, but if there are two drives at a similar price and one has a much higher TBW, you’d be stupid to pick the lower one.

                You can't get anywhere close to them with normal desktop workloads.

        Microsoft are releasing Direct Storage for Windows 11, if developers implement it for games you'll benefit then. But by then PCIe Gen 4 drives will be cheaper, so still worth holding off.

            @Brakus: Only purchase parts now if they are at all time low prices / bargain prices. Unless you really need an SSD right now, there is no real reason to buy this and use it at the end of the year (which will have sales).

                @Brakus: There is generally no bargain for 500GB SSDs, because $/GB isn't that good. So, while the price seems good for this particular SSD, 500GB, ideally is something you would get when you need it. For Samsung SSDs, I prefer cashback promotion, but if you are a big fan of the game, that could be enough incentive for you.

      Those numbers are mostly marketing. Basically, based on the numbers, this is a PCIe x4 gen 3 SSD. It is designed to compete with WD Blue NVMe PCIe x4 gen 3 DRAMless solution.

      Samsung wants to reduce cost, while throws in more caching optimisation to trick make it more attractive for people.

    Thanks OP. Grabbed one as my ESXi 1RU server on 7.0U1 needs the major brands such as Samsung/WD/etc to be "compatible" with it

    Got a Crucial P5 from black Friday but 7.0U1 doesn't like it. There are hacks to replace NVME drivers on 7.0U1 with drivers from 6.7U3 but not sure about the stability so…

    This might be a dumb question but does the PS5 ssd expansion slot add the storage on top of the already 500-600gb that comes in the console? Or does it overwrite it.

      This is NOT the Pro model (not suitable for PS5). This is PCIe x4 gen 3 SSD, not gen 4. While I know someone tested gen 4 SSD below specs, I do not know anyone has tested a gen 3 SSD yet (and it is possible Sony would simply disallow gen 3 SSDs).

      If you put in a compatible PCIe x4 gen 4 SSD in PS5, it appears as a separate storage. You can choose to install PS5 games to that SSD by default or install to console by default. By the way, beta firmware is NOT available in Australia yet.

          Internal SSD is soldered onto the board for both Series X and PS5, it cannot be replaced.

      It is a dumb question on this listing because the PS5 needs a certain amount of speed on the SSD for it to work/be compatible (whatever that means exactly).

      You will need the 980 PRO, not the base 980 which this post is about.

      And it adds storage, does not overwrite.

        For general usage, 980 might actually be faster, due to its larger SLC cache. Sure, it is DRAMless, but both XBox Series X and PS5 actually use DRAMless SSD for internal SSD.

        Not happy Samsung not putting in PCIe x4 gen 4 support on this though.

    Can anyone help me with SSDs? I'm so confused I just bought an MSI MAG B550M mortar wifi and i wanted to get 2 m.2 SSDs - one for bootup and one for storage.

    What does an SSD that has PCIE, DRAM/DRAMless and NVME mean? Would both my bootup (windows) and storage (photos, videos, games) need them?

    Sorry for the questions, i'm just really confused

      Generally, for m.2 SSDs you put inside a PC, you would prefer to get an NVMe SSD because SATA3's bandwidth is limited. But, even just on NVMe, there are different standards:

      PCIe x4 gen 2 (2GB/s max), PCIe x4 gen 3 (~4GB/s max), and PCIe x4 gen 4 (~7.8GB/s max). However, all those are sequential read/write, not random read/write. There are also enterprise level SSDs which could be PCIe x8 based. Random read/write generally is something you can notice. With most games not supporting DirectStorage, there is no real advantage of NVMe SSDs in games yet (but that may change). Also, due to random read/write isn't actually much faster, OS booting, you are not really seeing a big difference between SATA (good one, not the junk one) vs NVMe.

      DRAM based SSD puts the mapping information in DRAM during operation, so technically, they could be faster. However, a lot of good DRAMless SSDs now use system memory and actually have a larger SLC cache or newer controller to compensate. So, it is now more confusing. For example, while 970 EVO Plus has DRAM, 980 combat that with a larger SLC cache, so depending on the situations, there is no clear cut winner. However, 980 Pro vs 980, due to the same SLC cache size, and superior PCIe x4 gen 4 support, 980 Pro is simply much faster than 980.

      If you are not sure, just read the review of the SSD you are interested in, check the benchmark charts to get a basic idea of its performance.

          Generally, you either get the cheapest (SATA3) or the best (PCIe x4 gen 4). However, if you elected to go for a PCIe x4 gen 4 NVMe SSD, make sure your motherboard supports that, otherwise you are wasting money. Also, chipset such as B550 only supports 1 PCIe x4 gen 4 storage device (through the CPU). Technically, B450 and X470 chipsets are capable too, except AMD blocked it in the BIOS level.

          There isn't much advantage for system boot drive (SATA3 vs PCIe/MVMe) mainly because it is random read/write that matters (and often low queue depth, so NVMe SSDs don't actually shine in that area). However, the benchmark results and occasional file duplication / compression / decompression results are tempting and do trick brains to think those NVMe SSDs are much faster.

          Perhaps DirectStorage support would change that (for gaming), but most games currently don't benefit that much from NVMe. Right now, most games still need to support loading games from traditional hard drive so game makers cannot optimise the game loading only for SSD. Due to that, there is currently no real advantage on game loading with NVMe SSDs. Push from Series X|S and PS5 could change things….

      980: 3100/2600 (DRAMless)
      A2000: 2200/2000
      SN550: 2400/1750 (DRAMless)

      So that seems about right.

              @Sheng: Unless you are doing a lot of read/write activities such as video editing , you should be fine just with a standard SATA SSD for storage. You could get away with 500GB, or even 256GB of NVMe speeds for Windows install and some games etc.

              That board has a PCIe4 M.2 slot… So you could treat yourself to a Corsair MP600 or other PCIe4 drive, but I'm not sure anybody is noticing the difference at the moment (unless you regularly transfer very large files).
