WD Black SN850 NVMe M.2 SSD Gen4 500GB (without Heatsink) $149 + Delivery (Free for Metro Areas/ VIC C&C) @ Centre Com

140

I was looking for a decent M.2 SSD for my upgrade and finally decided on this one due to tight budget. Looks like a decent one to me.

Not the cheapest historically, but very close with the latest one from Shopping Express last week ($139.50 + Shipping).

Apparently will fit into a PS5 too from this post: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/10838893/redir

One of the fastest around and yes, PS5 compatible.

I wonder whether the 2TBs will drop or if the recent PS5 SSD discussions will instead make the prices skyrocket

    • +2

Americans have reported that they are noticing price increases since Cerny came out recommending the SN850

They are more expensive now than in March when I bought one. Not just this one but all fast nvme.

  • I'm sure this is a silly question, and sorry for hijacking the post, but I see heat sinks mentioned with SSDs. If I get an external SSD for my PS5 to run ps4 games from, do I need to worry about heat sinks?

Not for a normal external one SSD, not required.

Mainly for the internal M.2 SSD ones.

      • Thanks 😊

  • oH No I pAiD $151 from SE a FeW dayS aGo

    • That was with heat sink I think. You got a good bargain dw haha

  • PS5 needs a heat sink doesn't it?

  • This doesn't have dram right? Can anyone tell me what does that do to the performance? Thanks

    • It does indeed have a Micron DDR4 DRAM chip.

You may be thinking of the entry-level SN550 which doesn't.

    • It does have DRAM. Most, if not all, PCIe gen 4 SSDs capable of supporting PS5 would have DRAM.

Interestingly, both Series X and PS5's internal SSDs are DRAMless (cost saving).

  • Does it need a heatsink if you are putting it into a desktop?

    • They say this model is easy to get hot under load so better get a heatsink. But most Gen4 capable MB already have heatsink included anyway.

      • I have an old z97, I don’t think it has one on the M2 slot
