Shame it requires a subscription to do some basic features of other devices.

    • +4

      Not this new model, apparently.

Have a look at this video:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCxk8gfSz4E

      • -2

        still requires subscription to view

        • -1

no it doesn't. That's the benefit of the nest products over Arlo and competitors. The subscription gets you a longer viewing history, changing you from 3 hour event viewing history to 30 days. Also doesn't cost any extra if you get more cameras.

If you want something with no subscription at all look at TP-Link's Kasa/Tapo cameras which require microSD

  • +5

Just few question's if anyone knows:

    • It says 3 hours recording without the subscription. Is it up to 3 hours worth of event based recording? Or 3 hours from now? (Eg. If its 5pm now, view clip till 3 hours earlier which is 2pm)

    • It appears they have replacement policy for theft. Is this offered in Australia? https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9269698?hl=en

    Edit
Well, i did not read the policy properly. The theft replacement policy applies to Australia.

This replacement policy applies to customers who have installed Nest Doorbell battery or Nest Cam battery in all countries where this camera or doorbell are available.

    • Just got off the chat with google support.

The three hours (without the subscription) means the snapshots in the last three hours. Meaning if its 5pm now, you can view snapshots between 2 to 5pm.
So, if you are using it just as a doorbell, its good without the subscription, but if you want some added security, you will need the subscription.

      • +2

I have the first gen Nest doorbell and can confirm - it's the last 3 hours of still snapshots only. No motion.

Additionally, it had the ability to capture motion or person detection still shots but I've found this to be hit and miss if the person moves. Sometimes you'd end up with just a blank picture with no one there. Motion recording would really be best.

    • It's 3 hours of event based recording without subscription, the doorbell doesn't record unless there it detects an event.

    • +1

From a YouTube preview I saw it can record a total of 3 hours of events but it only does so if the internet is down, with a connection it uses the cloud

    • Hmm, after reading the replies, i've done further search and found below. I think google support gave me the advice on old models. If i am understanding this correct, it seems 3 hours worth of event video history (motion detection recording) rather than snapshots in the last three hours. But i guess i can only find this out after i purchase this item as this is a preorder. Or is this item already available in other country?

      https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9681538/?hl=en-…
If you have a newer camera like Nest Cam (battery) or Nest Doorbell (battery), you can get up to three hours of event video history without a subscription. But for most older Nest camera and doorbell models, you need a Nest Aware subscription to get event video history or 24/7 video history. This means that without a subscription, you can get photo snapshots of detected activity up to three hours in the past.

      • As I explained in another comment, it's 3 hours of event history. See this video: https://youtu.be/hCxk8gfSz4E

        • Thanks. This has been puzzling me.
So to clarify, you can access event based recordings in the past three hours.

Which is also explained in this video as well:
          https://youtu.be/xj5uzouWjfQ

          • @Summoner: @Summoner
So, for example there was an event at 3am, i wake up at 9am (now):

            1. I can see the whole video, recorded from midnight to 3am? (Event-3 hrs)
            2. But i cannot see video between 6am to 9am? (Now - 3hrs)

I feel no 1 doesn't make sense? Meaning basically the thing is continuously recording?

            • @CyberMurning: This only applies to free tier.
So, if there was an event at 3 am, you wake up at 9 am, there will be nothing for you to view as 3 hours have passed. At 9 am, you will only be able to see the event that happened between 6 am to 9 am.
So on its free tier, its only useful as doorbell.

If you want longer recording time, you will need to subscribe to one of the Nest Aware subscription.

              • Nest Aware: 30 days event based recording, $9 a Month or $90 Annually
              • Nest Aware Plus: 60 days event based recording, $18 a Month or $180 Annually

              https://store.google.com/au/product/nest_aware?hl=en-GB

              • @Summoner: What? Nothing to see? So the app will only say there is an event at 3am. Thats it?

But there should be at least setting says when event detected record for x minute? So at 9am i will be able to view the recording from 3am+ x minutes.? (My cheap eufy floodlights can do this)

                • @CyberMurning: Well, as you can see above comments, i have not used this product and am just researching the features before purchase. That is my understanding of the feature. If you need more accurate info, you will need to ask someone else. Lets see if there is anyone who can answer your question.

                  • @Summoner: Yes thanks. Ill wait for the release and reviews. If the price is $400+ then bad luck i wont buy.

                • @CyberMurning: I have the 1st gen Nest Hello doorbell without the Aware subscription and @Summoner is correct - you're only able to see identified events (e.g. noise, movement, person detected…) for the past 3 hours.

Everything that happens outside of these 3 hours goes into a black hole unless you've got the Nest Aware subscription.

      • From. https://www.finder.com.au/nest-aware
“There are three subscription tiers for Nest Aware, with the only difference between them being their video storage capacity. The $7/month tier stores footage for 5 days, the $14/month tier stores footage for 10 days and the $30/month tier stores footage for 30 days.“

        • Those were the older pricing models. The current pricing models are from summoner's msg:

If you want longer recording time, you will need to subscribe to one of the Nest Aware subscription.

Nest Aware: 30 days event based recording, $9 a Month or $90 Annually
Nest Aware Plus: 60 days event based recording, $18 a Month or $180 Annually

If you do go for a Nest Aware plan, you pay once no matter how many Nest devices you have.

  • I have first google doorbell and with paid subscription you either get 30 days event recording or more expensive I think roughly months of 24/7 recording.

This can be applied to all google cameras owned.

  • +1

So they are finally releasing this officially inn Australia? Only took them what 5 years?

    • +4

      It's a different product

  • +6

Pointless, I can only have one visitor anyway. I know who's at the door.

    • One visitor?

      • Singles bubble I assume.

  • Dam my Google amex offer expired a week ago. Why couldn't they release this a week earlier

  • Anyone know if it's waterproof?

  • What's with 300dollar and more devices that require a subscription? OzMurder

    • You should check on Peloton…

    • To be fair, using cloud storage is an ongoing cost for the provider, so a subscription is fair.

  • +1

Perfect timing google. Just as we are all stuck at home and have no visitors.

    • +1

      No bing bong :(

  • +2

    Now waiting for their thermostat

    • +1

You can buy the Nest thermostat easily from international sellers. I've had one for a couple of years and love it.

However they're designed for the US style of heating/cooling, and here are really only suited to the old school on/off central heating systems, and draw power from the heater itself, which sometimes isn't enough.

      • was worried abt insurance.

        • I can't see how it will affect insurance. It works the same as the existing thermostat for the unit (switching the unit on/off by opening/closing a low voltage circuit to the heater).
Warranty on the other hand - yeah you probably won't get warranty support.

          • +1

@tdth99: Cue the not Australian approved so if your house burns down insurance is voided. Especially since it controls heating which could cause a fire

            • @0 0 0: This is definitely true for many electrical appliances. But thermostats are operating with a simple open/close circuit at around 24V. You can handle the exposed wires to your thermostat with no risk whatsover.
As fair as I could tell (and I did check), there's no requirement for compliance with AS/NZS 3820 as there would be with say, a smart light switch.
The EESS even defines " extra low voltage (operating below 50V AC RMS or 120V ripple-free DC)" as not in scope.

              • @tdth99: Well I'd argue there absolutely is a risk with 24V or any voltage that is wired in. Accidentally hold with damp hands and you'll end up with 24v across your chest and heart. But anyway more just something to be aware of. Risk is low if you know what you are doing.

                • +2

@0 0 0: voltage isnt the danger, its the amps
and i very much doubt that the 24v circuit closing a relay is anywhere near a life threatening ampage

no more dangerous than putting your tongue on a 9v battery ;)

  • +1

Is there an anti theft mount available?

      • How does one mount the doorbell to this contraption? Plus: Out of stock

        • its for the cameras, not the doorbell

the doorbell seems to clip into its mount so its not as easily removed as the cameras

          • @SBOB: But you'd need to remove it from the mount to charge it right? Or do you need to use a power bank or something?

            • @Cheequee: yep, pretty sure its going to be held on with some kind of clip requiring the included 'Release tool' to take it off the mount.

Random question, I recently got the google router plus one access point. The google router plugs into nbn box and LAN into switch. (I haven't used access point yet)

Setup was simple but after one day of use, I noticed alot of packet loss on wired + wireless connections. Has anyone else had this?

    Firmware version: 13729.57.19

Ive seen threads experiencing similar issues =/

Ive switched the router back to my original and its been working with no packet loss

    • Random answer, yes.

  • They’re also dropping new battery powered cameras that are supposedly cheaper than the last IQ etc range.

    • On store now and job with free hub for singles

      • +1

        Thanks. Wow they’re expensive

        • Yeah I thought they were supposed to be cheaper, the old gen usually sell for $220

  • +3

Google copping it from people on Facebook as the doorbell has no anti theft protection, thus why they are offering anti theft support with a police report.

Looks like we will need to wait for a third party anti theft module for the doorbell.

  • +5

Just an FYI, if you have a Google One subscription, you’ll receive 10% back as a credit to your Google One account. So another $32.90 off for those that have that.

    • +5

Oh thanks for the heads up! Worthwhile subscribing just for this.

On another note the price in Australia sucks because of the Australian tax. US $179 which is around $240aud. We end up paying for the free bonus hub.

      • Guess we could just sell the Nest Hub?

    • Only if it's above 100gb i guess

    • +2

Just checked that you need the 2TB plan which is $12.49/month. But still worthwhile subscribing then cancelling.
I plan on getting maybe 3 battery cameras plus a doorbell camera.

      • How will that work? Would you need to stay on that plan until they credit you or does it happen instantly?

        • +1

          For anyone interested:

Get rewarded for your Google Store purchases
Google One members on certain plans get a percentage back on eligible Google Store purchases in the form of Google Store credit.

Google One members with 200GB plans: 3% back in Google Store credit
Google One members with 2TB, 10TB, 20TB or 30TB plans: 10% back in Google Store credit
          Notes:

This benefit is only available in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia.
Google One trial memberships and plan family members are not eligible.

          Start getting credit
On the Google Store, sign in using your Google One account. The credit you will earn on eligible purchases will automatically be calculated at checkout.

The earned credit is added to your account 30 days after your purchase ships, and you must still be an eligible Google One plan manager at that time in order to receive the credit. Google Store credit can be used towards future Google Store purchases. Your credit will expire 365 days after it’s issued.

To see your available Google Store credit, at the top of the Google Store page, select your profile picture.

For more info on how Google Store credit works, visit the help article.

          • @neo: oh thanks for the heads up. So I wonder what would happen if you had the 2TB plan at the time of purchasing the Google products then scaled back to the 200gb plan. If it says the credit will be calculated at checkout then presumably you'd get at the 10% rate instead of the 3%? It's a bummer how you have to wait 30 days post shipping but I guess it's a cashback thing.

            • @0 0 0: It's a good question and I'm thinking it's worth giving it a try since it's going to cost me $24 anyway in upgrade costs if I assume I have to wait the 30 days after purchase ships (which is 1st Sept).

              • @neo: For those interested, I got the credit even though I cancelled before I got charged the higher account fee.

  • Interesting product - if I plan to mount this at the gate front (30 metres from the door), how far is the range for it to keep communicating to the google Nest Hub in the house? Or it would be better to mount at the door? (some postie would not enter the gate?)

If it is mount at the gate, wouldn't it be very easy target for thief given it is wireless and be pull off easily (design to be able to taken off easily to be charged every 3-6 months)?

    • +3

I'm pretty sure it connects to your wifi. If your wifi signal reaches your front gate, it should be OK, but 30m is a pretty long distance…

    • +2

Mine is mounted at the gate, full exposure to the elements of sun, heat, rain, etc. So far hasn't been stolen. Range is around 14m though to a wifi point and the response is slow. Ie. Ring the bell and it'll be about 3-3 second lag to respond.

  • +2

Google site and job hifi say that you get the free google nest with each google cam pre order.
It’s not just for the doorbell.
Harvey Norman and good guys office works don’t mention the freebie.
Worth adding to description or a new post

Note - you only get one freebie I think for the 3 pack not 3 so worth buying single packs
You can order multiple singles at google.
The floodlight cam come out soon too so if u want that it might be worth waiting

  • Tempted to replace my eufy with this

    • U dun like eufy? The concept of storing to local hub and works without internet is nice.

  • Its still too expensive i dont want to pay pay any more than $60 which is my max limit for the smart door bell

But yea already too much in the google ecosystem, may find it handy during 2nd hand sales etc

  • Is there any use for this in an apartment?

    • +1

Do you want a Camera at your front door? Then yes. But not sure what you mean or need.

  • -5

Question — JB does allow for change-of-mind returns.. could I theoretically get the Nest Doorbell, get the redemption code, and then return it to a store?

  • time to replace my first gen ring door bell (and my yearly sub was coming up, so no point renewing that)

  • This or Ring Doorbell 2020? Bought the ring a few days ago and happy to return and get this one if worthwhile.

    • Go with ring if you have amazon devices, else go with Google. Ring subscription is cheaper if you only have 1 device. But google is better if you have multiple cameras.

  • Some good points in this video about missing features/old tech used:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQL-B8mOevs

  • I've been waiting for this!
The bundle is out of stock on the Google Store at the moment, because the Nest Hubs are out of stock.
So I've pre-ordered from JB Hifi instead. It means I wait longer for the Nest Hub, but that's not too big of a deal.

    • The opposite. Was interested but looking at the free recording features, nah….
      Will wait for eufy instead

  • Google is back in stock.

    • thanks I'll update the post

  • Anyone else have issues with the google store? I added one doorbell (with free nest Hub) and 1 camera (with free nest hub). Proceeded to checkout and after attempting payment I received "An unexpected error has occurred. Please try again later. [OR-RWE-02]". Payment has showed up on my PayPal account but no confirmation of order from Google.

  • +1

Shame we are only offered the white model doorbell here - the ash looks great. I have been trying to find out from Google if any plans to release other colours in Australia. Don't want to miss out on the free Next hub though…..
Anyone managed to find anything out about other colours?

  • Bugger, I had only just imported the original Nest Hello - 6 months ago…
Works great though, not sure if this will be worth the upgrade.

    • Never mind, I am definitely keeping my Nest Hello, this doorbell only has 1.3MP camera, down from the 3MP the Nest Hello has.

(and I cbf worrying about charging the battery every 3 months or so)

      • I'm wondering for upgrade purposes if the mount is similar in screw size. Mine is mounted on a stainless steel plate and it was a pain to screw on and drill.

    • per @paulsmithy I’m keen to get a different colour. What is the best way to import?

      • +1

Honestly I just bought it on eBay, and it was posted from Chicago.
        Link for reference: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/373064926686

I paired it up with a 24VAC Power Supply from Jaycar that someone here recommended and it has been working perfectly since.

Some people have reported a bit of latency with the ringing of the door bell, but I have had no issues with it, as it only takes 2-3 seconds for me. (On fibre internet though)
Fingers crossed with these new models coming out they all run on the same system that I assume will be brought online in Australia. 🤞

  • Thanks OP, just pre-ordered.

Was contemplating getting a Ring, but this will work with my Google home stuff so it seems like a better option.

  • Already received my Nest Hub! It came yesterday.

  • Does anyone have confirmation that the three hours of event recording is actually video events not just snapshots?

    • Pretty sure snapshots (individual screenshots) can't be measured in hours… Just saying

      • Yeah your right, i also just now confirmed with google support chat that it is three hours of video events which is like equivalent to about three weeks or two weeks of events, so really not bad. The previous nest doorbell only recorded snapshots for free tier customers.
