Kerbside Bins - Do You Wash Them?

Hi all,

Today we had our weekly bin collection (Melbourne suburb) and noted for the nth time that my neighbour washes the kerbside bins every single time.

I find this to be a total waste of water, especially in Australia where water is scarce.

What's your take on it? Do you wash your bins?

  • I've tipped a bottle of bleach in it a few times. Gets rid of any smell. I let it get emptied into the bin truck.

  • I wash them in my pressure washing biz.

$65 for one + $25 for each other one.

Take me like 8 mins all up.

$90 in 8 mins. Works for me.

Cheaper to just get a new bin…

You can't waste water, it comes back again due to the water cycle.

  • I bought a couple of kilos of table salt and every month or so I sprinkle a handful in the bottom of the bin after it's been emptied. Bin hasn't smelled bad since I started doing this.

All these people above washing their (or paying the neighbourhood entrepreneur) own bins even if they stink, never mind they're the ones who make them stink because the council 'owns' them and just ignore/live with it. Very strange mindset..

  • Ever smelt bin juice before?

  • Would be an issue if we were in drought but our dams are actually overflowing (well at least in the east)

  • I wash only general waste bin when it smells :)

Maybe just stop worrying about what other people do?

Why worry about other people's habit which has no impact on you?

  • Not every time, but every now and then will give it a rinse out and dump some pine-I-clean in there to freshen it up.

People clean their toilets, why wouldn't you clean your bin

  • No, I wash my recycling/bag my trash tightly before putting them in the bin.

  • only high pressure washed the red bin couple times in summer each year…

  • Parents did in the 90s occasionally. For the yellow/green now a-days not sure why you would. Don't have compost one so don't have anything to say there! BUT a while back I contacted my local council and the water corp. and they recommended a contained bin cleaning service as they suggested against disposing of the water solution into drains or runoff as it could be hazardous. When you think about what some people put in a bin, there really is shitloads of contaminants and by the time the storm water hits rivers and oceans it really disrupts that environment. Best thing to do is have it done once professionally and dispose of rubbish thoughtfully.

Bin cleaning is actually a business.

  • Wash it brother, especially during covid.
