Wheels Magazine Subscription - Free Sidchrome 38/64 Piece Tool Kit - 12/24 Month $79.99/ $139.95

770

Noticed this in the latest wheels mag. Not as cheap per issue as the previous subscription deal but the Sidchrome toolkit more than makes up for it. I was looking around for a quality toolkit so I might renew my subscription from the previous deal just for this.

  • That seems like a pretty good deal. Anyone been to Bunnings to confirm their [price is close to the rrp suggested?

Not sure about the AF sockets though, most stuff is metric now.

Supercheap Auto - currently have the 38pc set at $70

    64pc set at $249
    http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Sidch…

64pc deal is really good, even if you had the 20% off deal Supercheap recently had the Wheels deal is pretty bloody good.

I have no desire to get a Wheels mag sub, but I do need to get a good socket set, so this is as good a way as anything.

    • I'm also thinking along those lines..

      You spot a problem here?

38 pc set: $70 at SCA, valued at $89.95 by Wheels
64 pc set: $249 at SCA, valued at $219.95 by Wheels

Is SCA selling the 64 pc set at above the RRP?

      • Yep I thought this was a bit strange as well. Must be some difference in the toolkits? Maybe the SCA one is a newer kit?

        • Hmm. Looks the same. Also the 38pc is listed on SCA as $70 save $66… so are they suggesting the rrp is $135 versus $89.95 by Wheels?

      • It is odd as SCA group do try to always use the RRP.
Maybe someone dropped on the ball on supplying info.
It is also possible that Sidchrome don't actually have RRPs.

The 38pc is also weird as it says save $65.

After looking over Google at the 64pc set, I have seen the price range from $199 to $299.

  • i've been given a subscription through magshop in the past, and cancelled it after the 1st issue for a refund of the remaining subscription - no questions asked, just had to send an email.

anything which stops someone subscribing to this, receiving the sidchrome pack after 6-8 weeks, and then cancelling the subscription?? i couldn't see anything in the terms and conditions - and would be odd if you could do so…

    • After one magazine might be acceptable.. you get it and find it wasn't what you wanted, but I think by the time they send out the bonus, and you have had 2 mags, that maybe they would not be so agreeable anyway….

  • Looks like a great deal. As they mention, the price per mag is less than the shops anyway, so it's win win all round!

  • Wow, haven't read a car magazine for ages. Been only buying the odd 4WD magazine once or twice a year. This would make me subscribe! The 64pce looks good! Great deal and thanks for posting.

    • I like how you're really appreciative, but u didn't +'ve

      • Done!

Wish chicks magazines had as good gifts as that, I might subscribe to some.

this was a no brainer for me, i've been waiting for this excat 64 piece tool set for so long.
and for hte price of a magazine subscription, SCORE! thanks OP!

as a side note, is this a concern? do you have to quote the code online?

3.To enter you must subscribe to Wheels magazine by calling 136 116 and quoting M1203WHE or on-line at www.magshop.com.au/wheels Promoter accepts no responsibility for any online entries not received due to technical disruptions, network congestion or for any other reason.

    • Going by the wording, only need to quote it if you order over the phone.

      • +2

Checked by ringing up. Operator said only need to quote if ordering over the phone.

  • If I hadn't just bought a nice Kincrome socket set, I would seriously consider this.

One word of advice, however: figure out if you really need imperial sockets. IMO, they're basically useless in this day and age.

Kincrome (and probably Sidchrome) have Metric-only socket sets that are cheaper. I bought a 3/8" and 1/4" drive set which goes from 4mm to 22mm (I think) from Bunnings @ $59. Quality is awesome.

    Just food for thought.

    Stuart

    • Hmmmm good point. I haven't used Imperial for AGGGESS. And my cars are all Jap cars - i swear I can take my hold suzuki swift to bits with just a 10mm socket!

  • Done :D

  • Based on the last deal, $60 for the 64-piece set with 2 year sub.
    https://www.magshop.com.au/wh7

    • Fine print says not valid with any other offer

      • +1

my point was, compared to the linked previous offer, this deal is $60 more for 2 years, but includes the tools. You are in effect paying $60 for the FREE tools.

    Done!

Weeeee another socket set. This time I promise to keep all the sockets in their little holders so help me god!

  • Just letting everyone know that COSTCO sell the crescent 206 piece set for $135. Which includes all the deep sockets aswell. Its the same one as this.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/206Pc-Crescent-TOOL-SET-Wrench-Ad…

    • Do you know what the quality is like with Crescent? Sidchrome is some good stuff.

One of the most important differences between cheap-ass sockets and the good ones is the interior of the socket where the wrench slides in. Do the sockets have an indentation for the little locking pin on the wrench to grab on to? Or are they smooth. If they are smooth, do not buy.

I originally bought an SCA socket set to work on my car. I've lost a bunch of those smooth little suckers into my engine bay, never to be seen again :(

      • TBH I have been using a supercheap socket set, and it had the locking pins and ive been using that for over 2 years now, changed heaps of stuff on my car. Suspension, brakes, turbo. I thought it would have broken by now but it still keeps going.

Anyway the crescent kit looks to be some quality stuff, and you get alot of tools for the money. If you dont like the crescent kit just take it back to costco for a full refund.

    • Another option for those not near Costco, Bunnings have the 170 pce Crescent socket set for $129
      http://www.bunnings.com.au/products_product_170-piece-cresce…

      • I used cresent a long while ago and didn't find it to be the same quality as sidchrome.
It wasn't until I tried some much more expensive tools eg stahlwillie that I found anything better.
But advantage of those wasn't worth the extra price, and the lifetime guarentee (which I've tried out) for SC makes it a winner for me.

  • just ordered for the toolkit alone - so cheap and awesome quality.

  • I reckon this is a friggin good needed one of these sets

  • Hell yeah.. !! Ordered!

  • Great Deal - No matter how you look at it or what inferior brands you compare it to.

This site is starting to cost me - I mean SAVE me some serious money!!!

    Thanks for the post!

    • haha!! Agreed!

I bought a tv the other week now this! haha

  • +2

    Ordered!
Process was handled well. They accept paypal which I prefer.
The recipt was emailed immediately with no mention of the socket set.
I called their number (answered quickly by native english speaker!!!), and they don't detail free gifts on the receipt.
But it should all be in the mail all the same. I replied to the receipt to ask for confirmation seeing as this is my reason for the sub (no love for wheels).

    • Thanks for confirming that, i wondered the same thing. +ive

  • now i just ordered it last night but today i realise there is a "promotional code (optional)" box on the website. Does this need to have the code M1203WHE into it to get the socketset??

    • From what the cust serv rep said I think the free gift is automatic.
The promo code box is most likely for any discount codes you might have.
Why not just reply to their receipt - it has the cust service email address on it - and get confirmation for your own piece of mind.

      (Edited my speeling)

  • thanks , I've had my other Sidchrome sets for over 30 years .This one,s for my son and the mags
    for me

  • I'm new to working on cars. Would this socket set be able to work on a VW Polo?

    • No! Just kidding.. the socket set is imperial and metric, so really you can work on any car with it. Dad's got a Polo 77TSI and I'm pretty sure it's metric, but I haven't had to do any work to it yet.

  • After looking at this, the Crescent set above and my needs, I decided to go for the Supatool (Kincromes level down brand) 300 pcs set.
They have it as $290 on their website, I just picked it up for $199 at Bunnings.
    http://www.kincrome.com.au/web/catalogue/search/product_disp…

This was the cheapest I could find it anywhere.

  • I got the above Supatool chest home. Unwrapped it. And 30 mins later I rewrapped it.

I am taking this stinking pile of cheap crap back tomorrow.

    • Haha no kidding!
I've used several brands of bench tools and hand tools from my previous job and realized its just not worth getting cheaper tools…rusting tools, snapped, damaging bolts or stripping nuts! Bugger it!

  • So anyone know when we'll get our first magazine and socket set?

    • looking at my account from the website the first Mag has been sent dont know about the
socket set as the web site now states—

Due to overwhelming demand please allow up to 16 weeks for your socket set to be delivered.

      In the terms also -

Please allow 16 weeks after close of promotion for delivery of gift/prize.
so 16 weeks after 20th march

  • Looks like the 64-piece tools on the 2 year subscription has been withdrawn. I am guessing that was pretty popular. Shame, I would have bought for that.

    • anyone reckon some people will be dogged by the withdrawl?…i specifically signed up to the 2 year subscription for the 64 piece set (i dont even read car mags)but i did it atthe time when they were still advertising the choices of the 2 socket sets…

  • Damn, I really wanted the 64 piece kit. Looks like it's been removed from the advertisement but it's still in the terms and conditions. Is it worth the risk?

  • just found this deal, shame about the 64 piece being out of stock, i have a cheap set (well, cheaper) that does the same sizes, i just needed something that went over 20mm, so figured it was a good opportunity to upgrade :)

  • just got my wheel mag for April yesterday. still waiting on my Sidchrome set.

  • Dam I hope its not 16 weeks after March 20th… >.< I want my wrench set :D

    • Same! If this turns sour I'm gonna be freaking mad! though I actually enjoyed the mag…they are somewhat keen on everyone owning high end cars tho…

  • I ordered via phone and was told it should arrive in 4 weeks after 20th March

    Just got this update

    Dear XXXXX,

Thank you for subscribing to Wheels during our March promotion which entitles you to a free Sidchrome socket set.

We apologise for this great inconvenience and ask that you bear with us as we really are doing our best to get it to you as quickly as we can.

If you have any questions please feel free to call our customer service centre on 136 116.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy your subscription to Wheels, and thanks for coming on board as a subscriber!
