Damn… I hope this goes oos soon or I might buy it..

  • this or 6x ?

    • +1

no solar on 6x and 6x could be too bulky for a lot of people. Other than that, no difference really.

    • +1

I believe this would be a bit smaller than the 6x?
I have the 3HR which is the same size of the 6x and honestly, I believe it is way too big..

    • Solar version doesn't have sapphire crystal if that matters as it could be handy if you are using this watch in rough conditions. Also 6X can have quite a presence on the wrist but I believe it comes with a bigger battery.

But solar one doesnt have sapphire screen, which makes it very easy to scratch/crack

While I agree sapphire glass is more durable, I don't agree a non-sapphire glass is "very easy to crack", as I have had non-sapphire glass garmin watches and they have taken a lot of punishment without the glass cracking.

        Dunno why you're getting downvoted.

The non-sapphire is obviously less durable, but it's still gorilla glass so it's not exactly shit either.

I have a Fenix 3HR non sapphire. I use it for mountainbiking. I lost count of how many trees I hit or how many times I crashed. You will be surprised to see how it is still in almost perfect condition.

Echoing the other comments here, my FR935 has been hiking/running/MTBing/cycling and no damage.
I struck it with a squash racquet by accident and, again, no damage.
The non-sapphire is not exactly fragile

    • Sorry, probably i was being too paranoid re non-sapphire.
My sapphire doesnt have any scratches at all, although the bezel does.
But my understanding is that the solars have different glass compared to non-sapphires.

buy a screen protector if you are worried

I work outdoor. Will the solar version mean I won't have to charge it for months. Assuming not sports tracking. Just time and steps?

    • +1

I don't think so, Garmin's website say solar gives you approx 2 extra days of normal use. And from memory around 5-6 hours of extra GPS tracking for running/cycling/etc.

I you want something like that, the Instinct Solar is the way to go. It can last indefinitely in its lowest battery usage, just on solar power. I purchased it, but ended up getting the 6X that is still on sale as well, as my eyes are going in my old age, and the text on the 6X is bigger. I imagine the Instinct Solar will go on sale again at some point.

After doing a lot of reading, as Krayzii says below, the boost in battery life for the Fenix watches is fairly minimal and not worth the extra cost in my opinion. Maybe the next generation will have a better bump in battery life because of the solar charging, but I don't think it's work it in this generation.

      • What activities do you use the instinct for?
And what would be a good purchase price?

        • I got mine for $400 in the Prime day sale. It has a lot of the sports that the Fenix does, but it doesn't have the topo maps and some of the detailed data fields. This is a decent article https://www.techradar.com/au/news/garmin-instinct-vs-garmin-… as is this https://thewiredrunner.com/garmin-instinct-vs-fenix/ I was coming from a Casio Pro Trek PRG-270-1 so I really just wanted the sensors, GPS for hiking, steps and sleep tracking. I also didn't want to charge it every day and you get around 24 days in Smartwatch mode. I also liked the idea of almost infinite battery life with the Solar chargin, much like the Casio I came from. I'm not a runner and I have a bike computer, so I was more just a featured Casio that I was coming from. As I mentioned above, I just cant' read the screen, but that's my eyes being a problem, not anything with the watch and the Fenix 6x went on sale soon after. Because Ozbargain is the devil, it immediately tempted me with the purchase and I couldn't resist.

Read up on the solar reviews. Not really that useful in everyday situations and apparently require more than 3-4+ of FULL sunlight to make a slight difference (if you're hiking in with direct sunlight for over 5+ hours will net you some battery gains I suppose)

Quite a bit of reading but thats because I was contemplating about upgrading to the bigger size (I have the 6S Pro).

Anyway I decided based on the majority of the testing reviews it's quite minimal - I'll pass. Would've purchased it if I already didnt have the 6S Pro though.

  • Hello guys, is it this one come with dlc coating on the bazel? Thanks
