Chromecast with Google TV vs 1st Gen Chromecast

Long time 1st Gen Chromecast user but was thinking of getting the newest Chromecast with Google TV because it's ummm newer and I don't mind wasting my money.

I don't have a 4k TV, but an unsure what advantages does the Chromecast with Google TV offer me.

Does it load faster when streaming a show on Netflix? Takes too long for my liking with 1st Gen Chromecast.

Is the remote handy or fast to find/locate shows to watch on Netflix?

For those who have upgraded from 1st Gen Chromecast, is it worthwhile?

I currently power my Chromecast with the TV USB port, hopefully Chromecast with Google TV can also.

Yes to me it's a worthwhile upgrade and much speedier (depending on your WiFi speeds) in my experience. Not sure you can power it with your TV USB port though, it does require a little more juice I think. But overall, definitely worth the upgrade.

    • Thanks, was looking for someone to help me justify buying it.

Just had a quick look at prices.. dammit, just missed out a deal @ $64.

      • Get the Netflix deal then? The Chromecast works out to be $50. White is out of stock atm but give it a day or two and they'll have more https://store.google.com/au/config/chromecast_google_tv_netf…

Good deal if I wasn't using someone else's netflix account! Haha

          • @JimB: Haha! Indeed! With regards to your question, the Chromecast with google TV is leaps and bounds ahead of all the previous versions. The remote is a game changer.

The interface is very clean and makes navigating between apps seamless. Since getting the new Chromecast I NEVER use my smart TV apps anymore. I run everything though the Chromecast. Highly recommend.

            • @bataleon: Cheers! seems like the consensus.

I'll give away my Chromecast as it's still very functional but it seems like the Chromecast with google TV is a worthwhile upgrade.

I should add a poll, who pays for Nextflix and who leeches off someone else?

              • @JimB: Lol!! That would be a good one!

              • @JimB: I guess you could always keep your old chromecast and take it with you on holiday (air bnb etc). Just a thought.

@bataleon: That's a good idea, but I'd prefer to give it to a family member or friend who doesn't have one.

I could always take the new Chromecast knowing I'll have to change the settings when I get back… but in all honestly, when we go on holiday with the kids, we're always fairly busy and out and about. It's a welcome change for the kids not to watch too much TV.

        • Does anyone know what happens when you already have a Netflix account above the standard two-screen streaming plan included in the deal? Do they just credit the $89.99 to your current plan instead?

          Edit: found the answer

What happens if I have a different Netflix streaming plan?

You’ll still receive the credit applied to your account. The monthly cost of your service will be deducted from the balance in your Netflix account.

          • @Hieu: They credits $95. If you on premium pln, they take $20 monthly until that credit use up.

The Chromecast with Google TV very unlikely is powerful enough to work via the USB port on your Tv. I was looking into it (I have the Chromecast currently), and reading that it comes with a power cable.

Definitely a worthy upgrade however you will need to use the supplied power brick as the USB port on your TV won’t supply Enough juice. I now have changed all 4 over to CCWGTV. So convenient to navigate with a remote.

    • Must be good if you upgraded all 4!

  • +1

Yes, definitely an improvement. The remote makes all the difference. Cannot power from TV USB though. It's Android also, so can install apps.

    CCWGTV best ever google product

I've upgraded from a 1st Gen CC, and its definitely been worth it. Much more responsive and easier to use. usb port on our tv also couldn't provide it with power.

You can get google tv Chromecast with 6 months Netflix at $139.99 at google site https://store.google.com/config/chromecast_google_tv_netflix….

    • Thanks, I use someone else's Netflix account :D

      • Offer them $80 for $95 credit. Win win.

lol… not going to bite the hand that feeds me.

  • It's also worth considering an Amazon fireTV stick, bought one on Prime Day after our Chromecast died. Does pretty much the same as the chromecast except without the google home integration. The fireTV os is android based, so no issues sideloading APKs either. That said if you don't mind the difference in price chromecast w/ google tv looks better overall

    • Chromecast is cheap enough and prefer to stick with Google/Nest ecosystem.

Currently use my Google home max to control (voice) my Chromecast, i.e. play Netflix TV shows or Youtube clip, or to turn off the TV.
Not sure if Amazon fireTV stick can do this.

I also upgraded (from a CC Ultra, and that was an upgrade from a CC 2nd gen). Definitely worth the money. It's not going to make casting from your device any faster, but if you are like me, you'll be using the remote control more than the casting app on your mobile/PC.

    • Most report it's speedier, fingers crossed it is.

Kids will use the remote more than I will.

I just bought a CC+Google TV, had an original CC before that. In my experience its definitely speedier, no casting lag that I used to experience with the original. The interface makes a huge difference as well. It's running android and if you know what you're doing you can side load just about anything. Remotes programmable too, you might be able to control your audio and power with it. Definitely worth the cost when compared to other devices like Roku or Apple TV

    • +1

Yeah the lag on my current Chromecast is annoying me more than it should!

  • Many thanks guys (and gals).. will definitely be picking one up next time it's on sale.

I bought a Chromecast with TV recently and it is awesome. I had a Fetch box but it didn't support the Binge app. Just binged Game of Thrones and now into The Walking Dead. The Chromecast hasn't missed a beat.

  • I forgot about this post.

I picked one up a few months ago at full price and of course it was on sale after I bought it.

    It's a worthwhile upgrade.

The remote makes finding something to watch easy. It's a lot faster too and haven't experience any lag like I did with my original Chromecast.

I've just purchased a 4k TV, so the new Chromecast will be ideal.

In conclusion, it's well worth the $99.
