Thanks, I have no idea if they are any good, but cant argue with the price.

  • From the elves vs goblins one:

Portland, Oregon. A very different state of unrest.

Nienna Havard. College student. Librarian. No one special. She’s keeping a secret. Her mother’s in an mental institution after vanishing for several years. She came back talking about elves, goblins, and wars.

    … In AN mental institution?

    • Are you talking about the fact it should not be "an" but "a"? This could be an editorial mistake.
If so, I think the more pressing issue is the rampant use of "would of" (which makes no sense whatsoever) instead of "would have" and the still way to frequent use of "brought" when people mean they purchased something and should use "bought".

      • I work as an editor (in the media, not of books). To me, typos like that are a sure sign it's a self-published, digital-only series, as are many of the freebies. Judging by the reviews there's a good story involved, but it might be in need of a good edit.

Well, I do agree most written things these days need at least three editing runs. But when I look at online presences of many magazines, and newspapers and even their printed versions, I see so many mistakes that it blows my mind. The mistake here is tiny compared to that.
In general, the ability for proper written language has decreased significantly in the last 10 - 15 years.

          • @Lysander: I sorta agree but I feel like there must be an extra factor here. My theory is that the overall ability hasn't decreased much, but 15 years ago almost all the content we'd encounter was created by those with strong writing skills.

These days the barriers to content creation are almost non-existent so everyone's doing it. Even the commercial sources have had to drop their their hiring standards to save money to compete. This means we're seeing the work of those with lesser levels of skill at a far higher ratio than before. It's not so much that literacy has dropped, but that the typical level which was hidden is now visible.

            • @macfudd: Well, it is pretty scary how low the literacy level of this great, previously invisible, number of "writers' is. ;-)
I agree with your explanation but I also think the level has dropped considerably. Look at the school standards 15 or 20 years ago and then look at today's standards. Very scary to see the stark difference.

          • @Lysander: I agree about magazines and newspapers. I started my career as a sub-editor on those. Unfortunately as the media shifted online, the advertising income "rivers of gold" that magazines and newspapers had relied on for hundreds of years ran dry. One of the biggest ways to cut costs was to get rid of sub-editors. People like me were made redundant. That's what you're seeing nowadays - the absence of sub-editors.

Since then I've been running websites for broadcast media companies. In my current job I run the main front page of the website and I'm supposed to oversee everything else we have on the web and watch for errors. I can't catch everything across the whole network solo, but you won't see errors on my front page.

  • Cheers mate
