    Battle of the Coral Sea

Didn't the Japanese win that one?

    • +8

That really depends on how you look at it. Purely in terms of ships sunk, the Japanese only lost a light carrier (Shoho) while the Americans lost a fleet carrier (Lexington). However, as a result the Japanese failed to attack Port Moresby, which was their overall objective.

Damage and aircraft losses also meant that both Shokaku and Zuikaku were unavailable for the Battle of Midway, whereas Yorktown was (barely) repaired in time and other USN squadrons were transferred to her to replace depleted ones. So in terms of overall attrition, the outcome of Coral Sea favoured the US.

Sounds like they should make a movie about it.
